This was a big disappoint.

First, the problem I had that was Marvels fault and not the creators: 3.99 cover price for 22 pages of story. That's bullshit. At least it didn't have 28 pages of ads though (I counted before I bought it)

Ok, and now the problem that is the creators fault. There is just nothing here. I just read it not 2 minutes ago and already I have forgetten most of this story. :-?

The premise is interesting. Fairies attack England while a giant kidnaps a cabinet members child, and Wisdoms task force is called on to invade a mythical land to kick fairy ass. Sounds great to me.

But the execution was terrible. It was just bad joke after bad joke, right down to 'hippie Merlin'. It was impossible for me to like the cast also.

I haven't read any before and I usually don't like space crap. A few people made a case for it in the voting thread and I figure I might as well try it.

I loved it. That series brought me into big time Jenkins loyalty. The main character wasn't a weirdo and there weren't any fairies. The last issue had the best damn twist ever for me.

The main character was very much in the mould of Wisdom IMO (Seriously, who told you he was a weirdo?), and I don't see how the occult is that different to fairies :)

You really are trying to get my goat huh? I read it as more of a Heaven vs Hell story and not really an occult one. Try as you might to compare it to a story I love, I will not read a fairy book. I am curious of the reviews and I do not want to be negative, but I really am not interested in this comic. Fairies = suck.

Classic example of a story that only got greenlit because a celebrity writer thought it would be good. Was anyone really clamoring for a story where a cut-rate Gambit/Wolverine hybrid from Britain fought evil fairies? I know I certainly wasn't. This story isn't agressively terrible, but it's hard to take seriously. The good art helps make it tolerable, but overall, it's a silly concept with alternately bizzare and humorless execution. Readable, but very hard to recommend given the price point. 5/10

Wisdom #1 (Cornell/Hairsine; Marvel). Any comic with a red-head named "Mo" in it is always vastly superior to anything else currently out on the market. Which this is, sort of. It's a good premise, a good story, great art, but it's uneven and disjointed and between the set-up and the resolution feels far too short. Plus, for whatever reason, it feels very... 60s. Not as in a 60s comic, but as in I keep expecting a psychedelic band to enter from stage right. The character introductions were a bit brief, as I'd never really heard of any of them before and this didn’t tell me a lot about them, except to give me one-line descriptions: Fairy, Skrull, "Clairsentient," Captain Midlands (that's a joke, right, like a lesser Captain Britain?). All the same, it was fun, is headed in an interesting direction and I'll pick up the next one.

Story: 7.0 (this writer can do better)
Art: 8.0

"Suck My Tits, You Fairy Fucks!"

Just for that line alone, the book warrants a 7,great looking art by Trevor Hairsine( As it always is for the first half of a project after that....eh)

Overall, this wasn't a story that really needed to be told in the strictist "Sell Pete Wisdom to X-Men fans" way that maybe some people expected, it certainly doesn't jive with what's going on with him in New Excalibur. But still a fun first chapter that will make for a great TPB read in the spring.

They apparently gave him a LOT of lead-time for this, though, and weren't gonna solicit anything until they were sure he could get it all done on time. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, since I really like his art when he's on.

Well, it was a bit wonky, but I still enjoyed it. Fun story, good jokes, great art. Good cast too, if their introduction felt pretty random. But there's still 5 issues to go, and it looks like the story's going to pretty interesting. Bring on Clive Fucking Reston and Black Jack Fuck Tarr!

I'll give it a 7/10 for now.

Ah, I was thinking of Russell T. Davies. 'Father Day' was an excellent episode though, one of my favorites.

I could swear I'd read this book before. Or maybe it just seems that way because this has been done so many times.
I guess you can call this Constintine-light. It reminded me of about 100 other British comics from the 1980s and lacked any real impact. It wasn't bad, but I won't be there for issue 2.
My score: 6.9

I wasn't planning on buying this since Marvel's 3.99 cardstock cover comics are BULL (Eternals is good and all.... but COME ON!), but when I was at the shop yesterday I just couldn't resist the chance to participate in one of these things.

I echo all the "bleh" and "meh" sentiments. This was okay, but nothing I'll ever remember years from now. Bunch of crazy outcasts kill stuff and make snappy one liners.... There were some nice moments to be sure, Wisdom talking to Emma about Kitty, the aforementioned "Suck My Tits..." line, heck pretty much any single panel with Tink in it (though the clothed sex aftermath page was lame).

Hairsane, as usual in his early issues, was absolutely brilliant on art. Man, I hope this guy can really get some consistency going soon, his potential is mind boggling.

I've give this a 4/10, losing a full point because of the price.

Did anyone see the reason that this was a MAX book btw? Other than the fact that they typed out a little profanity instead of doing @#%@# I see no reason for it. I've seen the same violence and gore level in regular Marvel books lately, there was no nudity... odd. I guess it the later issues that earned it the label?

The rhythm of the book was off. The art was top-notch (and the best we've seen from Hairsine in awhile), and there were some fun moments, but there were some strange timing choices that either disturbed the flow or just didn't work at all. I like the concept and a number of the characters, but disappointing execution from the writer.

hmmm... this is coming via DCBS shortly... and now I'm not near as excited as I was. Ah, well. At least it was only 1.99, instead of 3.99.

Yeah, it wasn't any less violent or sexy than an Ultimates issue, really.

Regardless, I thought this was awesome. Hairsine's art was amazing, and found the script genuinely funny, with the perfect amount of sex and violence interwoven. Also, the story had great pacing; I loved the rollicking breakneck pace of the story, with great beats like Wisdom and Tink in bed, hit so as to provide humor and import. And Cornell did a great job of introductory characterization, gesturing towards their motivations rapidly and with ease. This is a cool book.

I absolutely loved it. After years of crappy British characters being written in comics this was top notch. Yes, the story was slight as it was a done in one story with seeds for later on, but there was wit and fun to it.

This is what Pete Wisdom should be like as compared to the neutered character we've seen in recent years.

As a Brit the Captain Midlands character was very funny. Might not mean much to the US audience, but I love the notion of a Brummie Supersoldier.

As I said in my advance review (http://fractalmatter.com/main/?p=418) this was damned fun and the best first issue at Marvel by a writer in years. Hairsine's art was a lot sharper than anything he's done in ages. Let's hope he can keep the standard up.

I really enjoyed this issue, it was just a load of fun. I think marvel should have the courage to try more unusual comics, even when the don't work. Its a shame that more people won't pick it up because it doesn't star wolverine or spiderman.

Amazing art from hairisne, a lot better than the style he used on the Galactus mini, the story was fun and light hearted, Wisdom was classy as ever. It's astonishing that Marvel put such a good artist on a mature reders title, thimbs up.

I throughly enjoyed it, and will buy the rest of it, if for no other reason, then to help get Marvel to produce more MAX titles.

As an epilogue....

WISDOM #3 (of 6)
Written by PAUL CORNELL
Penciled by MANUEL GARCIA
Cover by TREVOR HAIRSINE
There's a dragon running the Welsh mob. And that's not a metaphor. A fire-breathing, giant lizard is running the mob and the Welsh police can't handle it. This falls under the purview of Pete Wisdom and MI 13. And they're calling in some extra help to handle this problem as SHANG-CHI, MASTER OF KUNG FU shows up in this issue!
32 PGS./Explicit Content ...$3.99

Wisdom #1 - just jumps right in with a story about fairies in England, but the book never grabbed me. It just never stopped long enough and stayed on one thing long enough to keep me interested. I like Hairsine's art, but the writing was eh. Just because the main character is British doesn't make it good and this was far from good, and Wisdom was nowhere near the character he can be as shown by Ellis (his creator).

Another book where the idea and intent was better than the execution.

Don't worry about me, I love it when people revive the threads! :)

I will probably update the old threads about once a month, reaveraging scores. If you want to review some books please do!

I thoroughly enjoyed this. I love Wisdom's character and after seeing his horrible portrayal over in New Excalibur, this was like a breath of fresh air (or some equally fitting cliche). The art was pretty and the dialogue was fun ("Suck My Tits, You Fairy Fucks!", for example). This wasn't superb by any means but it was almost exactly what I expected: enjoyable.

Looking forward to more.

Well, that's sort of true, I get some from DCBS and the rest from my lcs.

There are a good number of books I have on hand that I haven't read yet because of work and family obligations.
