Well, there are folks who dont have all that, and have to make do with just one box attached to their TV, and would like to have it multi-functional.

I've been using the x-box as a DVD player on the set in the basement since I got it, while I have a much better TV and DVD in the living room. The x-box isn't the best DVD player in the world, but it's functional. If I decided to make a big system change and go Wii, the fact that it has no DVD player would probably be a deal breaker for me.

Heh - I forgot I had a DVD player in my original XBox.

That being said, an important bit of my last post was that $40 Cyberhome DVD player. If you're looking for the same incredible depth of functionality in your DVD player as a game console would provide, it's a pretty fine use of 40 bucks... $20 cheaper than a new-gen game, no matter the system you're buying it for.

The TV I'm about to replace is 10 years old. It has some RCA plugs in the back and another set up front. The DVD player is plugged into the back. Because of my unending stupidity, I never dropped the $30 on the switch box I really needed for all the game systems I own. closer, but not very much. Assuming, of course, that you do need the DVD player.

And there will be DVD play in the Wii for people who want it. We announced support coming sometime next year, in a form similar to the Xbox's.

So sayeth 1Up:
Digital media software company Sonic Solutions, a company focused on software solutions for DVD, HD-DVD and Blu-ray playback and authoring, announced today that Nintendo has chosen their CinePlayer CE DVD Navigator to be incorporated into a Wii to be released "in the latter half of 2007."

Swiit! Let us know if it happens! What games did you get?

Wii Sports - Fantastic. Packing this into the system was one of the best ideas Ninetndo has had. If they had included an extra controller and chuck in the box, then the Wii package would be perfection. Since I got 3 extras of each, then my family can all play at once and it's a load of fun. I'd say as far as fun goes, it's Bowling, Tennis, Golf, Boxing, Baseball in that order. And bowling and tennis might switch places depending on the mood of the room. This is an excellent party/family game. I'm not sure I'd bother playing single player.

Zelda - Rocky first hour. Like, "wow, I can't believe they shipped this" kind of rocky. The story stuff is solid, but the tutorial text feels like placeholder until they hire a real writer. Fishing isn't properly explained. There's a quest with a cat that looks like it's going to be herding (which you've just been taught) but isn't. Then once you figure out fishing (but you're still only doing what the tutorial has told you to do so you haven't actually figured out the quest you're trying to complete yet since you're never told that the B button does anything while fishing) you think you're supposed to lead the cat home, but the little fucker won't go in the door. Then, once you go to Gamefaqs and look up the stupid cat quest and say "B button?! Nobody told me pressing the B button would drop the fish! They just kept telling me to press A to throw it back! Fuckers!", you realize that the way to solve the cat quest was in fact completely unpredictable. After that, there's some minor aggrivations with the next tiny stretch of game, but I think those are more down to the basic RCA cables not giving my HDTV a decent signal and thus I missed some features of the game world that really strike me as things that should have been more obvious. I'm anxious for my component cables to get here so I can see a crisper picture.

Excite Truck - I think I like this more than anyone else in my house. But I'm also the only one who was editing tracks in Excite Bike 20 years ago (Jesus). The steering wheel style control, the drifting/tilting mechanics, the sense of speed and the total arcade goofiness of the whole physics system really make for a lot of fun. It's not the kind of game you sit down and try to conqure, but it is the kind of game you pop in and play with friends.

Rayman - Pissed me off before entertaining me tremendously. When you start up the game, you are forced to play through 4 or 5 mini-games single player before you can play anything multi-player. We were all sitting there, checking out the Wii, high on Wii Sports when I remembered that Rayman was 4 player. So we pop it in and I proceed to fail at a rather difficult cow tossing game that is thrown at you in the forced single player portion. We all tried it a few times and when I finally got it, I felt more that it was luck than skill that got me through. Multi-Player is fun enough. It's trying to be a Mario Party/Warioware kind of thing and it does an okay job on that front for the most part. The Rabbits are pretty funny and the kids were enjoying watching what the rabbits did more than they were enjoying the game.

Rented Trauma Center and found it was even more irritating than the DS version, which at least managed to be fun for 3 or 4 levels before making you wonder why you'd ever gone to pretend med school in the first place.

Rented Dragon Ball Z for 10 year old son. At first I thought it was just a button masher and pretty disposable, but I started to realize there's actually some depth there. I don't know how much, but I'm willing to explore for a day or so before shunting the game back to Gamefly.

Bomberman '93 - Virtual Console title. It's the Turbographix 16 version of the game and it's 5 player crazy fun. Bomberman is like Sonic for me - you guys got it so right the first time, why have you fucked it up every time since? My 6 year old loves this game. My wife loves this game. Everybody who plays old school Bomberman loves this game.

yay wii!

and just push through the fist hour or so of zelda, it hits its stride pretty quick and does nothing but get better and better.

Totally agree on Zelda. Man, that first hour makes no fucking sense without getting help from online. Seriously, if you're going to spend the first part of the game in tutorial, they could at least hold your hand through it. Just figuring out how to get the fishing rod was ridiculous. It reminded me of the original NES Zelda, where you had no damn idea where to go next unless some friend of yours told you, or you had some Nintendo magazine that told you what to do next. I think I got used to having games hold my hand and making the next step obvious, at least early on.

That being said, wow, once you get your sword and shield, you're pretty much gonna roll through without much confusion. It's a lot of fun when you get into it, and the level designs, characters, and boss villains are pretty well-varied. Aside from some minor cheating with online help in the water dungeon, I've found this game less frustrating. Just remember, when bobber fishing, cast your line, let the bobber stand up and dip into the water, then when you see a fish swimming toward your line, wait a second or two when it's out of sight, then pull up fast. Keep holding up and you'll nab that fish. I must have sat there for 45 minutes letting the fish swim to the line, and then gently pull up, only to see my bobber pop out of the water and watch the fish swim away. It should give you better fishing instructions, and to pull up FAST.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance is fun on this system, but no online play seems like a big disappointment.

I at first regretted the purchase because it made me feel old. When I was 14, I would have sat and mastered this thing, difficulty be damned. (R-Type, Gradius, all the shoot 'em ups of the NES days is where a lot of my teenage years went)

Then, last night, after playing some Zelda, I gave it another go and realized a half hour later that I was still sitting there playing it, getting better each go round. If somebody had been playing the Rocky theme for me, it might have been perfect.

Ok, I just downloaded this last night and wow, I felt like a tool. It reminded me of Gradius or Life Force (but with a top down view) and I was lamely wishing for the Konami Code to use. It reminded me of why I loved Life Force on NES, I could cheat with something like 30 lives per continue, and on this, I clearly can't.

I do find it irritating I can't just download a $6.00 game and have to buy at least $10 worth of points. Now I have 400 Wii points and can't download anything, which means Nintendo took me for $4 I can't use. Everything should be individually downloadable.

That is a (I guess) nice thing about the Live Marketplace - they have filler crap you can buy if you're just looking to burn your last handful of points, rather than hold onto them so you have to buy fewer points next go round. I'd willingly buy a Zelda or Mario theme for the channels screen for a dollar (100 points).

I feel like what the Wii shop is really missing (aside from the option to tie a credit card to your account like EVERY OTHER SHOPPING SERVICE ON EARTH - ahem. Pardon me) is a demo function of some sort. Even if it was a "download and play for five minutes" thing, I'd be okay with that. There's just some things I'm not sure I'll be in to. $5 to $10 isn't a lot of money, granted. But I also don't just set $10 bills on fire to see what color they'll glow. But, for example, I just now played the Robo Blitz demo on Live and saved myself $10. If I had bought it and disliked it as much as I did, I think my purchasing would be at an end.

More info on that mystery VC game (http://gonintendo.com/?p=9973)

A couple days back we discussed a recent article in GamesTM that said a mystery VC title was coming out. (http://gonintendo.com/?p=9790) Reader Mr.Hendo got in touch with me to give us some more info. He is a member of the GamesTM forum, and has a bit of info posted by GamesTM staff writer Ash.
Everybody seems to be grasping the wrong end of the stick, where that comment’s concerned. The mystery game (http://gonintendo.com/?p=9973#) in question isn’t actually a console (http://gonintendo.com/?p=9973#) game and wasn’t made in Japan. So everyone who’s guessing at Mario (http://gonintendo.com/?p=9973#) RPG (http://gonintendo.com/?p=9973#) or NiGHTS 2 is going to be disappointed.
You guys went nuts commenting on this story the other day, now with this bit of info, what are you changing your answers to?!

According to my Wii's records, I played Wii Sports for 40 minutes, then Zelda for 1:50.

The sports are kinda fun... I'm a bit disappointed with the boxing, I can't seem to get combos out the way it thinks I should... hell, it won't even let me throw a right punch half the time.

So far, tennis has been fun... but I find I'm having to mimic my character rather than them following my movements... which the boxing does a bit better, except for the whole not throwing punches thing.

Evan Wiener
12-11-2006, 10:48 AM
Yeah, I'm really disappointed in boxing. It seems the response to the controllers is nowhere near as good as all the other Wii sports games. Not sure why, if it's limitations in the tech or just lazy design.

Nintendo's suggestion #4:Upgrade 802.11b devices to 802.11g.
While 802.11b is the most common type of wireless network, the 802.11g network is about 5 times faster. Most 802.11g routers are backward-compatible with 802.11b, so you can still use any 802.11b devices that you currently have.
I'd hope they're using a g signal, since they're suggesting I have one available...

..as an aside though, my router was set to G-only, I set it to allow mixed signals, as well as trying channels 1 and 11, which nintendo also suggests, and it still failed to connect... The Wii can SEE the router... and says it's good strength, but it just fails to connect.

Can't recall.. something like 58330.. or 53088.... some combination of those general numbers... it fell into a range that nintendo's support page just said "you can't connect" about... then told me to twiddle my channels, not use wireless phones and go ask linksys how to update my router.

I'll get the exact number when I get home at midnightish tonight.

Ok, so I received a $100 Best Buy giftcard and can't think of anything practical to get with it, so I'm considering getting a couple of Wii games. However, most of the Wii games seem like games that I normally would have waited for price drops to get and I'm iffy on them being worth $50 a piece. I have Zelda and Marvel Ult. Alliance, and am considering Elebits and waiting for Wario Ware.

I hear good things about Elebits so far. Same goes for Super Swing Golf, oddly enough, although I haven't played it yet. Excite Truck is fun, but it might not be 50 bucks worth of fun... Brian seemed to like Rayman after a slow and painful start, though. Red Steel is...not so much. But your two are good choices.

Rayman has worn on me because you can only play the games in multi-player once you've played them single-player. There's also a lack of crazy competition in the multi-player like you get from a Mario Party title. I went through a hate love hate relationship with Rayman and finally settled on "Why the fuck did I buy this before I rented it?"

Oslo, Norway - December 19, 2006

Opera Software today announces that a trial version of its Web browser for Nintendo’s new game console, Wii, will be available on December 22, 2006. The trial version of the Opera browser for Wii is available for download, free of charge from the the Wii Shop Channel. SUPER SWING GOLF

It's a 0.

At first, i thought there was something there. But after a few days, I don't think there is.

I felt like I needed some practice to really get the hang of it, but after several hours of play, I realize I'm not really getting any better results out of the game -- and I'm not entirely sure it's my fault. We all fuck up at games we're otherwise good at from time to time, but the fuck ups in SSG feel random and computer-driven rather than due to my own skill as a player. The fact that my 6 year old flailing with the controller in random directions is getting the same results I am when doing what I'm told to do with the controller leads me to feel even more like it's not user error.

Aside from the sketchy controls, there's issues with not being able to skip the A.I.'s turn and the A.I. predictably smacking the ball into stupid directions based on how early in the tournament it is. I replayed the same course three times trying different ways of swinging the wiimote and the A.I. went out of bounds in the same place on the same shot before putting on the green within a 10-foot area on the next shot every time.

Eventually, I gave up and sent it back to Gamefly. I'd love a good golf game for the Wii, but this ain't it.
