View Full Version : MS. MARVEL #11 & the MS. MARVEL SPECIAL
Brian Reed

Interesting fact about the comic book industry: I wrote the special a long time before I wrote #11 and the idea was to put the special out whenever it worked best for Marvel. Thus the two solicitations, written months apart, that have the phrase "oldest foe" in them.

MS. MARVEL SPECIAL
Written by BRIAN REED
Pencils and Cover by GUISEPPE CAMUNCOLI
Once upon a time, Carol Danvers was a novelist. This morning, at the New York Public Library, a child with the ability to turn anything he imagines into reality has begun to read Carol’s sci-fi epic “Binary,” based loosely on her own life amongst the stars. Within minutes, the library is overrun with visions from Carol’s book and soon all of New York City is threatened! Brian Reed (Ms. Marvel, New Avengers: Illuminati) and Giuseppe Camuncoli (Captain Atom: Armageddon) team up for this one-shot special guest-starring Simon “Wonder Man” Williams and re-introducing one of Ms. Marvel’s oldest threats!

Those covers look amazing. I just posted elsewhere that MsM fans were missing something great if they didn't check them out.
And as for her oldest foes? It'll be nice to see Yon-Rogg and the Kree Sentry back after all this time.

Unless something else got tossed into the issue that I don't know about, that "48 pages" note is incorrect. But I also admit that I am usually not 100% in the loop on a lot of things.

Those would be some of Carol Danvers oldest foes, yes. I said "Ms. Marvel" ;)

Wow...just wow!!!
When can we get the cover to Ms. Marvel #11 turned into a full-size poster!?!? And that shot of Binary is one of the best I've ever seen...period! I can't wait to see the interior art!
January is going to be a good month for Carol Fans! She's also guest-starring in WONDER MAN's limited series.
As for Ms. Marvel's oldest threats... with Doomsday Man appearing in MS. MARVEL #11... I'm going to have to guess that the Special features the return of... Yon-Rogg! He was "killed" in the blast that created Ms. Marvel...which was from the Kree Psyche-Magnitron...which had the power to make "thoughts a reality". Kind of like the boy in this story.... hmmmm :)

Yeah, that cover has poster-worthiness in spades.

Hmmmm.... Comic Book Resources posted a different cover for #11 (seen below). Variant cover or was the wrong one sent out??

Not bad ... who's the artist? Could be Leinil Francis Yu? Brian?

Ya know, I hadn't seen that one yet. I have no idea about the who/what of it. I'll have to ask.
Further amusing -- I just realized issue 11 comes out at the start of the month and the Special at the end -- making the solicitation to the special even sillier since the baddy mentioned is also in issue 11. D'oh. (I wrote the special between writing issues 8 and 9, and sort of expected it to ship somewhere around there. I didn't realize it was being saved for a 5th week like January has.) oh well -- it doesn't break the stories, just the solicits which were also written out of order at random times.

How come the Ms. Marvel Special is solicited with no issue number? Is it gonna be a #1 or not numbered like the Marvel Annuals from 1995-2001.
How come this story is being told outside the regular series?

Wow! Both covers look great, and the stories sound really good! I'm looking forward to this! And congrats on getting a Ms Marvel Special--Marvel isn't doing many annuals or specials anymore, so it is quite a vote of confidence that you and Carol were able to get one. :)
Bursting out of an A.I.M. storage facility - the sinister cybernetic DOOMSDAY MAN! But who would reactivate Doomsday Man after so many years?
Well, not that many years--it would only have been about two years ago, Marvel Time, that Doomsday Man last showed up to ruin Carol's day--back in AVENGERS vol.3 #16-17.
I wonder if they've managed to separate the Destructor from Doomsday Man yet...
Also this issue... a new man in Ms. Marvel's life
Presumably the same new man mentioned in the #10 solicit...either that, or Carol's developing quite the active social life. ;)

I wrote it as "MS. MARVEL SPECIAL #1" but that was just me putting a numbner on it. Who knows why it is or isn't actually numbered.
As for why it's not in the ongoing -- I was asked if I wanted to write a one shot and I said yes. ;) Also, it gave me a chance to delve into the idea of Binary without taking time out of the main series to do it. Not that there isn't some main series Binary love coming in the next year or so...

Two is more than one, so "so many" felt fair :)

I've been really good about being a couple scripts ahead of the solicits, so I sometimes have to re-open a particular issue and remind myself of what happened and when. Every so often, I forget a little thing like this and I promote it twice. It's just one of those ways that I rock.
Yay--more Wonder Man!
The guy will NOT go home. Sheesh. He wasn't even supposed to BE in issue 12 and yet... there he is again. And after today's meeting, I think you can expect to see even more of him in coming months.

*L* Fair enough. Given how much stuff happens to these people in any Marvel Year, I'm sure two years does feel like a loooong time.

Seeing 'more of him' in what sense? Is Taxman going to have to make a new topless/pantless Wonder Man microhero? ;)
Seriously, fans of Carol/Wondy should be pretty happy these days. First we had them as a couple in HoM, and now Simon is part of Carol's supporting cast, Carol will be a supporting character in the upcoming WONDER MAN miniseries, and the two of them will be serving together in MIGHTY AVENGERS! Woo-hoooooooo! :)

I have to add my vote to a longterm Carol-Simon pairing. These two have come a long way since the days when Carol wading in to throw punches made Simon uncomfortable.

Hi folks,
I can clear up part of some confusion about the two MS. MARVEL #11 covers.
This one's actually mine--
http://img335.imageshack.us/img335/2435/msmarv011covql6.jpg
(There's my little sig on the lower left.)
It was used for early solicitations. The book is changing editors and that probably contributed to the mix-up.

I believe that will be the actual cover by Travel Foreman. (?)
Binaryan, ramtower- thanks for the kind words. I don't know what, if anything, they plan to with mine, but if they made a poster I'd buy it. ;)
