So, I just started watching this show on DVD. Never seen it before.
...When does it get good? The first episode was, obviously, a first episode--not quite sure of itself, not really confident in its characters, but it still felt pretty weak to me, and I'm not sure i'd be compelled to watch more. Can I skip season one and come back...sometime later without being lost? If so, where?

No idea. I tried a few times through the first season and never saw the appeal. Although I did love the premise of a 5 year story arc built into a TV show.

Skip the first season it is dreadful shite. Seasons 2-4 I believe are the ones you want to watch. And season 2 may take a bit to get going. Seasons 3 and 4, assuming I'm remembering the correct numbers, were really quite good.

never seen it, but I am going to meet Claudia Christian this weekend.
I even drew her, I hope she likes it.

I forgot she was in that show. Back in my public relations days (Sarah Day is a real person, I tell you) Claudia was one of my boss's clients. I vaguely remember talking to her for a bit in Vegas when we were doing some deal for the Rio's grand opening.

was she nice?
i hope she is... i drew her as the sheriff from the movie fargo, and i'm hoping she has a sense of humor.

Just so you know, if you're watching the boxset, the pilot episode isn't included. I think it's called The Gathering or something (though it may be on US boxsets).
Season 1 is pretty bad, but it sets up some plot points for future seasons so I'd say stick with it. Seasons 2 onwards are when it gets really good. Never saw season 5 though, so I can't comment on that.

It gets good after they switch Captains (I dont remember when that happens, season 2 or 3 I think.) It gopt progressively better after that.

I remember her as nice. But I also barely remember her. I don't think I'm helping.

Google and the imdb aren't helping me out, but whenever Bruce Boxleitner's name is mentioned, I always half-remember a pseudo-game-show-type-thing from the late 80s where "celebrities" were teamed up with "normal folks" and chased through a maze or forest or something by some guy in an all black motorcycle suit & helmet combo.
The contestants and their celebrity buddies had these bulky Lazer Tag-esque backpacks on and the Man in Black would shoot at them with his laser gun. I want to say that if the backpack was hit, a container would pop open and confetti would spew out, but I also suspect I'm misremembering it.
I think there was ever only the one episode and the only solid memory I have (and the reason for my rambling) is the Man in Black screaming "BOXLIIIITNERRRRR!!" as he chased Bruce and his cohort.

I recall so many people being apeshit insanely into B5... and I never got it. I thought it was one of the lamer shows I'd forced myself to sit through.

Season 1 wasn't all bad--there were some really good episodes in the mix. But there were certainly some growing pains in that first year, and they had to do a lot of set-up stuff to get things in place for the rest of the 5 year arc.
I definately recommend sticking with it. The series gets really good (especially seasons 3 and 4), but there is stuff worth watching in every season. I love those characters, and I'm thrilled that JMS is bringing some of them back for some new B5 mini-movies next year! :)

People tend to forget that there are differences of taste and assume that they are the allmighty judge of quality with a capital "Q".
