If you keep it respectful, you can actually have a conversation. I for one am not going to let you insult me and continue talking about something trivial like a comic book. If you can't stay respectful, I will just wait and watch for someone else to bash you and let them give you your just deserts...

When you start calling someone names you pretty much lose any opportunity to:

1) convince them that you're right and they're wrong.
2) learn anything
3) have any sort of productive conversation.

But, at some point, you should be willing to let it all hang out and let it be known, bluntly, that you're right and they're wrong.

You can do that without juvenile name calling. Or for that matter, being in any way disrespectful.

For example, I think I've made it pretty clear that on this subject I think that you're wrong and I'm right.

The only reason you think we must be respectful of others is because you know the consequences of being disrespectful: losing the respect of others. If respect wasn't that important to you, you wouldn't really see that as much of a consequence, and therefore, wouldn't use the word "must."

... I don't believe a word of what I posted in here, whith the exception of the Alpha Male stuff. I just read one too many political conversations over on another board where everybody there seemed to live their lives by the stuff I expressed here, that I thought I'd squash that sentiment down to it's barest elements and see what kind of a reaction it'd get. I thought it'sd be fun, maybe because I've had a drink.

I have to say it's been fascinating.

The philosopher Voltaire once insisted to another author, "I detest what you write, but I would give my life to make it possible for you to continue to write."

It's called "tolerance".

Steve Martin once said, "I believe in equality for everyone. ...No matter how stupid or how much better I am than they are."

You respect people for being "human". You don't have to agree with them, to respect their right to live.

We should also point out that a person's right to opinions and free speech doesn't require others to listen or pay attention.

I'm being serious, gentlemen. I don't see why I should respect people when they say something that makes me not respect them.If you just love to argue for no reason, then yeah, there's nothing wrong with being disrespectful. But if you ever hope to actually LEARN something from a discussion or to ever have THEM learn something about your opinion, be respectful. No one learns from an asshole, even if they make perfect sense.
