Mormons are always asking me to do things, and for favors, simply because there is this bizarre notion that we are related by our faith. They mooch, big time. On the one hand, as a conservative, I believe that church should be the source of welfare and not the government. On the other, what does that have to do with me decorating the gym for your Halloween party for free?
These women asked me to produce 8-12 large Spiderman paintings to hang up for a one-night youth dance. Yeah, you could ask me to do roughly 12,000 dollars worth of work pro-bono, or you could get your busy rear ends down to the dollar store and buy some of the many, many Spiderman posters available there in. And it never stops.

I used to date a Mormon.... hell she's actually related to both Joe Smith (mothers side) AND Brigham Young (father's side... and good video series too I might add).... the relationship DID NOT end well.
that being said I did get her into comics..... hell she wa more into Identity Crisis than I was....and she's a die hard Fables fan now.
but my feelings on Mormons...... hoo boy won't go there, ALOT of issues stemming from my old relationship.
but hey I watch big love and wouldn't mind half a dozen wives....

Hum. You know, I'm not all THAT attached to this Greek Orthodox thing...and I'm really pretty on the straight and narrow anyway...I'm always interested in learning about other faiths...hummm...if I convert, can I get 12,000 in free art? Cause really, that'd be pretty worth it.
(...I'm kidding by the way...)

Ethan, you have to know your not alone.
Do you know how many lawyers are called up to help out a member of thier ward?
Or denists who do free wisdom teeth removal for the young man going on a mission.
Everyone who has a skill, be it a construction worker, doctor or even artist is asked to 'help' someone out once thier talent is known in the community. Its just the way it is. I dont think anything is wrong with it, but it can be nervy of them sometimes, and you know better than me, some jobs you help out, some jobs you decline.
AJ
PS: I"m sure if your wife was the president of the Primary you might do a little poster board of the something cute to put her notes on whihc kids passed thier articles of faith on. nothing big, just helping out.

Mmmmm....nope. It never happened. I was the Ward activities committee (an army of one!) and he wouldn't draw on posters, cards, fliers, NADA.
Beacuse every time he has to take time to do a side project, it takes time away from either a) work or b) family. And I'd rather use clip art or draw it myself than a) not pay the bills or b) not have family time together.
And asking him to airbrush the Scout Trailer was beyond nervy.
I'm a chef, everyone calls me to bring meals. Sometimes I accept, sometimes I decline. But it doesn't cost $12,000 of my time and talents to do it. It doesn't affect this family's income, and it doesn't take me away from the boys for insane amounts of time. Asking a chef to bring a sick person a meal is a resonable request. Asking an artist under tight deadlines to take a week off and paint a trailer with a medium he doesn't use is not. That's the difference.

sounds like your really still upset at this guy.
I'd recommend to not let it still bother you. Let go of it. The jerky dude asked, and was declined and thats that. Not everyone has tact or common sense.
definately look after your family first.
have a good one.

Thanks Andy! :) Yeah, I guess I still am. One "no" didn't suffice, it was more like 10 or 20 different "NO! STop asking already, he can't do it! Take the hint, Man!" and then I think they moved out of our Ward finally. Otherwise, I'm sure they'd still be asking. :dunno:

Well, I'm not a Mormon, but I had to screen a movie about Mormons, before it was released in the theatre I worked at. Anyone ever watch "God's Army"? It was released some years back (like 4 years, roughly). Wasn't a bad movie, though not something I normally watch.

unfortunately I have not seen Gods Army I kept wanting to.
but there are very few LDS films I like. Brigham City being probably the only one.

I was raised LDS but I've been inactive for a long time now. I still have a very positive outlook on the Church though, I sometimes think about going back. Just never feels quite right though.
My Parents are still active though and I have a home teacher that shows up once a month. Maybe one of these days I'll give in and go back.
