Greetings sir, welcome to this den of insanity amongst the comics universe.
Here is where I shall take obscure questions and pose them to you in a somewhat random manner. So without further adieu....
Oh Ethan

Were you shocked at the true size of Bendis?
Are you doing Commisions for the kids these days?
In an obscure fist fight who would win bendis or gail simone?
How many dvds do you own?

I just saw your diamond shaped sig on the December preview for something (Nightwing 127 maybe).
Is that new? I dont remember ever registering that before. How'd you come up with it? The letters seem to spell something out... I cant be sure... it could be a name...

This is more annoying than a hundred letters column questions for WIZARD.
But I will answer, for the day's sake.
Oh Ethan
What got you into comics?
A. John Byrne, and the awareness that I'd end up looking like him anyhow. I might as well draw comics too.
What book boasts your proudests work?
A. FUZZY BUZZARD AND FRIENDS #1
Where do the ducks go in the south?
A. I think they stay here.
How often has someone confused you for someone else?
A. I can't think of one single time. They see me with my entourage of misshapen circus performers and know it's me, instantly.
Were you shocked at the true size of Bendis?
A. He's much bigger than he looks in his tiny WIZARD MAGAZINE photos.
Are you doing Commisions for the kids these days?
A. I'll do anything for the kids.
In an obscure fist fight who would win bendis or gail simone?
A. I think it would depend on what they were fighting for. Bendis, under the circumstances depicted in CINDERELLA MAN, might be able to take Gail. If he really wanted it.
How many dvds do you own?
A. I've never counted them. Hundreds and hundreds.
What are your top 5....

Rapid fire ( first word or sentance that pops into your head)
Marvel- New X-Men
DC- Home
Loeb- I don't have a word, I only think about the time I went to dinner with him and his son, and some other DC peoples a couple of years ago. I don't know Jeph very well, but he's been friendly to me.
Johns- Good pal, best writer I've worked with
Bendis- An enigma. I like his Spiderman stuff a lot.
Miller- A dark, shadowy, but friendly guy who gave me some encouragement when I needed it. Dark Knight Returns is essential to me
Millar- I really loved his Ultimate X-Men arc with Phoenix and the Hellfire club. I haven't kept up, though.
Hughes- Adam Hughes? One of the best American comic book artists ever. And a very unassuming and clever guy.
Oeming- I think of his Judge Dredd work, for some reason, because I think that's what he was doing when I first met him, years ago. Don't know much about him, personally.
Slott: I've never read him, though I'm hearing I should.
Del'Otto: I don't know him...
Hitch: My favorite Marvel artist, and also a superb gentleman. Very nice.
Cooke: Loved his take on Green Lantern. I read the first trade of New Frontier, and liked it an awful lot. I should read the other half.
Quesada: Joe was one of the first well established professionals to take an interest in me and my work. I've always been grateful for that. But I never felt at ease working at his Marvel, and it's made me uncomfortable around him since. It's too bad, because he used to call me when I lived in Oregon, and he was very funny. That's how life goes.
Dido: Dan Didio, or the singer Dido? I'm guessing you mean Dan, because it follows Quesada. Dan is the most energetic and brilliant presence in comics since god knows when, and he's made DC a much better and much more fun place to work. He's always got time to talk to me.
Morrison: Genius.
Chopra: No thoughts.
McGuiness: I saw all of his career begin! I was there when he was 'discovered' at Harris Comics, and I was at the convention when he had just shown his samples to Joe Madureira, who got him swept away to Marvel. I didn't see him again, until this past summer at Heroes Convention in Charlotte. I love his stuff. And he's a good guy, too! Hope to see him again.
Conventions: Exhausting but fun. They aren't what they used to be when I was younger, and I'd party all night. These days, conventions are work. I enjoy them.
Podcasts: I've only done a couple, and never listened to any.

Single or multiply? I like my schlerosis multiple.
top or bottom? In what sense?
Pepsi or coke? They're both the same.
Night or day? Night.
Letterman or Conan? Neither.
Stewart or Colbert? Fuck both of them.
Lastly of the entire jinxworld cult.... yeah I siad it , its a cult. Whom do you suspect shall feel the wraith of your banning powers?
A. Neither. I am benign fascism.
Thank you for your time keep up the grand work....
and please note the irony of myself being banned due to these ludacris questions would not be lost on me. Goddard on the other hand ;)
A. I saw no questions about Ludacris.

Damn, you really love those x-files dvds. It was my favorite show for a long long time. I still have not gotten those last two seasons that you defended a while back.
For my favorite dvds, X-Files ties with the DCU cartoons and specfically the first 3 seasons of Batman. I LOVED that cartoon.

I have all the DCU cartoons, but I really can't watch non-funny cartoons for very long. The bad voice acting gives me a headache, especially the women. In Batman cartoons, the women are either giggling feeblemindedly or they are tough, butch and kick ass. It's painful. And they are all drawn like they are 13. I know it's an unpopular sentiment, but there it is.
Bugs Bunny cartoons, those I can watch all day long.

Yeah, I can see your point. However, I was in junior high when they started showing the Batman ones and I have a warm and fuzzy place for them. I have the Batmobile from that series of toys and I just love that damn thing.

Umm...would that be awesome or what?
That would be awesome, except the only original Beach Boy left in the touring group is Mike Love. Mike is great, but everyone hates him because he is constantly suing the other band members, and he is a devout Republican. I, obviously, don't fault him for either 'fault', since his contributions to Brian Wilson's songs have resulted in their biggest hits, and he deserves a bigger slice of the Lemon Pie. Also, since the Beach Boys are "America's Band" according to Ronald Reagen, they'd BETTER be Republicans.

Why do you think all clowns are evil?
I don't, but they aren't entertaining in the slightest. I also suspect that most clowns are homeless drug addicts and alcoholics, and their festive gay colors and festoonery don't disguise their potential for depravity. Stephen King implied that clowns live in sewers and in the drainpipes of high school gym showers. I knew this all along.
Ethan Van Sciver

They're nice fellows. I really like Peter Steigerwald, and I wish he would pick a fight with Moose Baumann. They're both about the same size, could crush a man's head with one hand, and a color war would be awesome. Sadly, both are pacifists and gentlemen.

Ethan,I understand the bad times you had at Marvel but I am kinda confused. If Joe Q was really cool with you,why do you feel uncomfortable around him specifically?
I don't know. I haven't spoken to Joe in years. It's just one of those things. People ask me about it so often, that I end up talking about it often, and it seems like a bigger issue for me than it actually is. I don't think about it much.

Ethan,
As a fellow central FL resident, I have a few local questions for you:
Katherine Harris: Do you like her, dislike her, or just feel sorry for her?
New Arena in I-Drive area: Do you want it where it is now or do you like the idea of it being near the Orange County Convention Center?
Do you follow local or state politics?
I know that you like to hide things in your art.
Will you ever release a key as to what is hidden in what book?
Along the same lines what is the worst thing that you've hidden? (I think I remember reading somewhere that you said you hid something really awful in a GL issue)

A key? No, because it's not organized like that. The only time I really went all out deliberately was NXM #118. The rest of the time, I do it because I'm bored and want to amuse myself. And there's no rhyme or reason to what I do. Embedded images, little notes to myself, subliminal messages and imagery, double entendres, etc.
The worst thing I hid was fairly recently. An enormous phallus and large, blue testicles. Try and find it!

Except that it's not at all rare. They're all good, but if I had to choose one Beatles album to take to a deserted island, it'd be the White Album. It's the longest, obviously, and it has a nice mix of different sounds. Also, they rock the hardest on the White Album.

Well, he's a douchebag, but he's not really on my radar. He's another grandstanding liberal with a tv show trying to make a name for himself by being indecent to his guests. And by picking fights with more successful windbags. He's dull.

PRISON BREAK is great for that...I don't know why, but shows like 24 and Prison Break allow you to fill in the blanks with your mind. They are narrarated well through the dialogue, and you only need to look up occassionally.

Movie commentaries are really good. I found that having a commentary in the special features can get me to buy a movie I wouldn't otherwise watch. I've just finished Entourage Season 1, and that was really good as well. I found sitcoms like Arrested Development are really fun, but you find yourself just watching them a little too much.
Thanks for the info. I never would have thought of documentaries. Now I can go to the "Special Interests" section of the DVD store for something other than soft-core porn.

When you do Conventions, Do you charge for your auto? If so how much? and do you think different of people who just want to meet and greet you rather than purchase an autograph or a sketch (if you do that sort of thing)?
I ask because lately I have been to some cons, and the attitiude of people turns 180 once they realize that you aren't plunking down $$$ in front of them. I do realize that it's a business and about the $$$ but what about the guy, or gal, who just wants to say hi, or thanks for doing such a good job?

I would never pay for an autograph. A sketch yes, autogragh no. I usually only take 1 or 2 comics to get autographs and not drop a short box and expect them to sign all of those. That is unreasonable and upsets me when fans do that. If they don't want to sign a comic or two for a fan who admires them and their talent, then they run the risk of not having any fans. I have yet to come accross a creator though who was a dick about sign a comic.

I don't charge for my autograph, and think it's pretty slimy to do that. Although some of these celebrities that show up have to, because that's how they make a living these days. I dunno. If I was on the Incredible Hulk show in the 70's, I might charge 20 bucks for an autopgraphed photo now. Maybe that'd be my right.
Most people who come to see me at a convention are there to shake my hand and get some books signed. Rarely is money exchanged, and I don't really have anything for sale 98% of the time. I do charge for complex sketches, though, but it's not why I'm there. I'm there to meet, sign and talk to fans. Hope to see you!

No! Your question was "why don't I put up a sticky with my convention appearances?" I guess because I don't really have a full schedule of convention appearances at the moment. I've got the Dallas show at the end of October, and I'm doing a signing this weekend in South Carolina, NYC in February, and Tennessee in June. So it's very sparse, and I haven't committed to very much for this coming year yet.

Are you a fan of Batman Beyond? I have a fairly long thread on Bendis' forum where a lot of folk have been craving a Batman Beyond comic. Would you ever be interested in doing something along those lines?
I figure a writer and an artist could go ape wild on coming up with ideas since there isn't a whole lot of continuity to adhear to.

Hows the Sinestro Corps coming along? The latest Wizard had some of his designs for the Sinestro Corps.
They look great, and Sinestro doesn't look like he mugged Kermit the Frog for his collar. Sinestro looks badass for a 65lb old man.

Well I looked around and couldn't Find anything, so I thought I'd ask here. What's up with Superman/Batman #31? I was really Excited because I thought I was going to get a EVS Heavy Plasic Man Issue and was really Sad when I opened it and the Art wasn't Yours. Since I can't remember correctly if you were going to draw the Issue and wasn't able to for Some reason. If so can you tell us why you weren't able to do the Issue? Was it just a Time issue or something else?

Ethan,I saw on some other messageboard some preliminary drawings uncolored and without word balloons showing Zoom 2 going through most of the JLA. He is one of my favorite charactors and was wondering without spoiling it to much. Will Zoom be involved in the Sinestro Corps mini?

He is in it, obviously. You'll have to wait and see!

Ethan....I know you are very familiar with certain charactors of both Marvel and DC. Given how much you know about the Green Lantern corps. How scary would it be if Dr. Doom were to ever gain a Green Lantern ring given his intelligence and will power?
I know how fanboyish this question sounds but I just had to ask.

It wouldn't be scary at all. Dr. Doom would try to use it for some evil purpose or personal gain, and the ring would reject him, and find another wearer.

Guess now he would be more suited to a yellow ring then.
