View Full Version : My wife supports my love of comics but hates video games

I find this very interesting, but can see why she feels this way. Video Games are seen as a real scourge on productivity. She feels the time I spend on gaming could be spent on art I could work on for myself, or freelance work, but she totally supports my love of comics. If I talk about thinning out the collection and want to sell even a couple of comics, she discourages me from doing so unless I REALLY want to get rid of them.

I don't have a crazy collection, probably 9 long boxes full, but I find it strange that she could care less about the $10 a week or so on comics I buy, but if I get a video game for $50 (and I might get one at launch like that once every 3 months now) I get a dirty look.

Maybe she's right? We've heard of comic creators who slack off and start gaming and never come back, right?

I would probably have the same problem except that she has to go to bed every night before 9 because of her job so she's OK with me putting the gaming time in then. If she didn't, I'm pretty sure she'd resent the time I put into those sweet, sweet games!

This is purely anecdotal, but my female friends tell me video games kill sex drive in men.

My wife is the same way. I think what really bothers them is the way videogames require so much attention and focus. When I am playing a game, I am pretty oblivious to everything else. Also, she doesn't like the cussing. graphic violence of the more recent games (Saint's Row/Dead Rising).

Contrast that with a comic book, where I can pause and answer a question/help with something.

My wife hates comics, sports, and anything else I spend money on. But its my money.

I would think the amount of space comics take up would be a problem, but I store my long boxes in a closet in my office. She doesn't bitch about them being on the coffee table or all over my office too much either. Maybe she appreciates the medium as art and video games as nerdy time-wasting junk. :) Funny...

My wife is the same way, because I can read comic books at work during lunch but video games take away from our 'us' time. Which I totally understand, however, I secretly think she just doesn't want to give up the TV for any amount of time. :)

We have joined finances and both make almost equal pay. I only make a personal spending allotment of $20 a week on lunch out and comics. We've never had the "My money, your money" thing going on.

We actually have one account as well. Although I have a business account, and the comics come out of that one. She just sees stacks and stacks of comics with $3 price tags and realizes they're expensive, and in a way she's right.

My wife thinks video games are an expensive hobby, but doesn't realize that by spending $10 a week on comics, which is like 3 comics a week, I'm at over $500 a year. I'm spending probably $300+ on Nintendo Wii.

You wife (and everybody in general) needs to realize that it's important for adults to play (however you define play, be it video games, snowboarding, or even tinkering with your car). It's one of those things I've had to learn in the past couple of years.
I mean, I'm an artist, and I love creating art, but sometimes it's work. Play allows your mind to work in other ways, and allows you to relax.
I have to set aside at least an hour each week to play, otherwise I begin to go crazy from all the seriousness and the stress.

I think women have some gene encoded in them that whenever they see a guy sitting in front of a tv, that equals = Bad.

But if they are sitting down reading something, that equals = Good.

Ha! My wife and I are actually the opposite - she's a TV addict while I'm an avid reader. I only follow two shows but she watches anything and everything. But that's why I can't play vid games - I never get the friggin' TV!!!

I'm reviving this thread because of my purchase of the Wii. The wife likes Wii Sports Tennis but when it comes to my play of Zelda, she's still using the "I hate video games." nonsense.

My wife reads a few magazines, but likes watching TV with me. Maybe that's why she dislikes them so much? They need to be simple enough for her to participate or she's not interested. She won't read comics either, even things I know for a fact she would like. But she doesn't give me a hassle about the comics I buy. She claims they are my 'thing', and she's not about to come between me and comics. Nintendo games are sorta my thing too... :)

My wife refuses to read comics, but watches the DCU cartoons, the movies, and plays X-Men Legends.... I have no clue what is up there....

My girlfriend (who I live with) is very supportive of both. I read my of my comics in free time I have that she doesn't, or on the toilet. There are a few (but it's a growing number) that we both read, like Invincible. That said, I'm 3 weeks behind on comics, or so. With video games, she and I have been playing Paper Mario recently. She knows nothing about video games, so when I told her what it was she thought I was making it up at first. She loves it, though.

My fiancee loves my comic habit. For her it means that we hang out and read together (she's always reading books). She doen't mind my video games so much, but she can't stand watching TV.

My girlfriend came over yesterday and played Zelda II on my Gamecube for 4 hours.

Also, she was over at my apartment yesterday playing video games.

Colin's currently sitting beside me playing Neverwinter Nights 2. While I'm not that enthusiastic about his game playing because he sometimes tends not to hear me/delays reaction, I really don't mind it unless it cuts into other activities.

Of course, once we finally get a Wii, he's going to have to fight me to play.

I can relate to you guys who don't have wives that support your hobbies. My wife hates my love of midget porn. Every time I bring home a new video, I get the hairy eyeball and I'm always like, "Hey, I like to jack off to midgets shtupping. Leave me alone. Do I get on you 'cause you love to buy little knick knacks to decorate the house?"

Sheesh. :surrend:
