I guess if you can call it a spoiler after the show has finished up a long time ago...

Anyways, I just finished season 5 and I loved it. Much more than I dug BtVS. A ton more. I was just curious what has been done with the characters after the final season ran. Do we know who lived and who died through that apocolypse?

In the final season recap, Joss made it sound as if Gunn was a goner. Wesley ate it. So, if the show was to come back, the returning cast would have been Spike, Angel and Illyria? Lorne left...

Just curious what has been done with the characters in the comics medium since and if it has been revealed who survived.

Thanks.

supposedly they were going to add Willow as a cast member and somehow bring Fred back and Amy Acker would play both Fred and Illyria.

They've had comics that take place after the finale. Everyone that was in the "final fight" lived. As far as I can tell, besides Wesley, the only real injury was that Gunn lost an eye. The gang has seen Lorne and he is alive and well.

Wasn't Oz orignally supposed to join Angel Investigations in the hypothetical Season 6? I thought I heard that.

Okay, it goes like this.....

If the series HAD continued - Wes would've lived for a little while longer. Fred WOULDN'T have died, but Illyria would've taken over her body. There was something being considered about later spliting them both so there'd have been a weird ass love triangle as only Whedon can manage between Wes/ Fred/ Illyria. Oz was supposed to come back into the show and teach "Dog girl" how to control her powers and the majority of the season was supposed to deal with the fight with the senior partners. I'm pretty sure the whole thing with Lorne/ Lindsey didn't happen yet either, though I think they were still planning on it eventually.

When it finished and had no way of continuing - Spike and Illyria lived. Lorne was unknown but presumably hunted. Gunn died fighting. Angel was unknown (Spike and Illyria were the only ones known to survive because Marsters and Acker signed contracts for those TV movies that are in the works).

Because the series continued in comic book form - Everyone survived the final battle. Gunn lost an eye.

Very cool. I appreciate it.

I loved Oz. Not a huge Willow fan, but Oz in Angel would have been excellent. I'm glad that Gunn lived. I was disappointed about Lorne in the end. He was one of my favorites.

Hopefully we can get a 6th season in comic form. How are the Angel comics? I haven't checked em out at all, though I'll probably end up getting the new Buffy "season" in trade.

The comics are decent enough. The two Angel mini's were a bit weak, but good in the sense that you learned what happened to the characters. The second mini was actually really good up until the end. The Spike comics have been really good too, and the character one-shots have been really good except for the Gunn one. I'd definitely recommend checking them out.

From what I heard, the original idea was to have Fred & Illyria be 2 people from the start, but they decided to permantly kill Fred instead.

Mutant Enemy found out that the show was canceled while they were filming the scene where Illyria was rescuing Gun & Angel was jumping through his timestream in the episode Timebomb.

The original plan was to make it look like Angel went bad at the end of season 5, have the Gang vs. Angel, the team up to destroy Wolfram & Hart in season 6. Season 7 would be "what do we do know that all the enemies are vanquished?"

I think Marsters was leaving after season 5 no mater what.

"Gunn is dead. Illyria keeps fighting. Angel loses an arm. Spike gets Shanshu. And Xander loses another eye, which is funny, because he isn't even there." -Joss Whedon

I think thats more of a test shot, like that Optimus Prime one from IDW where he's posing like Uncle Sam and people just assumed it was the first issue cover. It's a great pic regardless though :D

From joss' site: Georges Jeanty - the artist for the Buffy season 8 comic book. As confirmed by Joss, Dark Horse's Scott Allie and indeed the latest All the Rage column.

Georges Jeanty is currently working on The American Way for Wildstorm and his work (as well as the series) is quite wonderful.

here's his website. but still nothing like what i saw. I'm sure the cover art was done by someone else and i'll just have to wait to figure it out.
http://www.kabalounge.com/buffy.htm
about the cover art- NOTE: We would like to retract for EW.com who mistakenly reported that Georges did the cover art of #1. The truth is, G's barely gotten into drawing the comic yet because he's finishing up The American Way. Keep you eye on this space as more becomes available!

David Fury maintained that the only major difference after cancellation was Wes's death and the ambiguity of the final scene. The plan for season five was equated to working for Greenpeace for years, then being given the keys to every oil company in the world. The plan for season six was about imagining a world where that part of the equation (in this case, Wolfram and Hart) were completely out of the equation.

That ending gives more credence to Joss comments about Oz and Willow guest starring for parts of season six. Then again, there were also rumors about season six being set in a post-apocalyptic LA due to the fallout of that last fight, so who knows what they were actually going to go with.

CAUTION: HYPE ZONE

While I don't deal with what happened after season 5, you can always buy the Angel Halloween Special to see my take on how two very important characters in the Buffy/Angel world met each other.

I read somewhere that J August Richards was under the impression that Gunn was actually going to be vamped. So he was dying at the end, but he got a new lease of life - sort of.

I saw Joss at comiccon when they were shooting Serenity in 2004 and someone asked if he could tell them how the gang faired in the battle in the Angel finale. Joss immediately said "Well, of course Gunn is dead" and 5000 people moaned in sadness at the same time. Joss said "You asked!" and then he gave a big spiel on how it's purposely left open.
