2. Ben, my Rutu love is subjective of course, but I really admire her style. I think Exit Wounds is her most beautifully drawn work. The coloring alone is gorgeous.
4. Blake, those are soooo good. I expect the end result to be epic.
The coloring in Exit Wounds was amazing. It's a fantastic book. I'm looking forward to her new book.
Thanks man. I'm taking my time writing, it's gonna be hard to get this drawn like I want it.

I think it's fair to call Modan's work a bit stiff. It's something about the uniform line width I think; Exit Wounds almost looks like it was drawn in Illustrator or something. I still like it a lot, especially the coloring.

thanks guys! It took two times to get this story right, but I'm pleased with it.
Here's a few things my buddy Wil colored for me:

They aren't for anything in particular...or are they? haha
Low Moon was great, I'm hoping it ends up in a book sometime in the future. I'm still surprised how good the NY Times comics have been. I wonder who will be up after Modan, I need to catch up on her strip...
Awesome on every level.

I mainly ask because I'm wondering if someone could pick up a stack of mini-comics for me if I send them the money for them and a SASE to send them to me.
Not asking for anyone to go out of their way, just more of a when you stop at a table to get yourself a copy of something, plunk some of my cash down for a second copy.

Yeah, I haven't read them entirely, but I read parts of Tales From the Farm a couple years ago. It seemed like great stuff.
To answer one of Donald's questions earlier, I haven't read Good-bye by Tatsumi, but I have and LOVE The Push-Man and Other Stories. Yoshihiro Tatsumi is an amazing cartoonist.

I read Black Hole for the first time. It was absolutely incredible. I've never been so unnerved by a book before. It made me cringe a few times.
The extra mouth on Rob was the cause more than once.
But I loved every minute of it. I'd give it a 10 out of 10, easily. His art is obviously amazing, but the story he weaves is impeccable. I loved that "the bug" isn't introduced, but that's it's already a prevalent part of their lives and we just jump into the story. His depiction of high school is perfect. We blew everything out of proportion in high school, and these kids do the same thing, but with them, it's at least partially accurate. This has been on my shelf for a few months now. I don't why I waiting so long to read it.
Between reading this and Hicksville, comics have really blown me away recently.

Hicksville is maybe my all time favorite comic. If you dig Dylan Horrocks, check out Atlas. Three issues so far, from D&Q, it's loosely related to Hicksville. Great stuff.
And a big, BIG thumbs up to my favorite gn of the year so far, "Abandoned Cars" by Tim Lane (pub'd by Fantagraphics). It's sort of an odd 60/40 mix of Burns and Clowes, but it really stands on it's own two feet. Midwestern lower class short story madness. And the chapter breaks are outstanding, almost worth the price of the book on their own.
Go check it out, I think you guys will really dig it...

Word. Herge has become a major influence on me over the past - I'd say - year. From the way I draw eyes, to how his use of composition and storytelling.
I needs me some Tin Tin. I wish I could get the Herge sketchbooks from Stuart Ng books. But it's like 45$ -100$. They're books of his sketchbooks from trips to like, Italy, and Rome, and people in shops and such.

Ben, I'm really glad to hear you finally got some Tintin. Tintin has stayed with me for a while, I really want the complete collection, despite the ones I've already bought. The books have aways been the highest standard for coloring in comics.
PBS had a great Hergé special a couple years ago. It was very depressing in a lot of ways, but online they had a lot of great resources, with contemporary cartoonists talking about how he influenced them (Clowes, for example).

i read the first story and it was tough because the art was just amazing, but i could not care less about the story. like, i'm glad it's there to introduce new exotic locales or whatever, but by the end i wasn't even reading. so thats a little not cool, but the art makes up for it.

I'm excited! I was going to make a $40 order next week anyway, so I think I'll end up spending more than that in the end.
Oh they also have a page up for the Ganzfield #7 (they skipped #6). It's 288 pages in full color. Ben Jones co-edited it. There are all kinds of really good artists in the lineup. It comes with a Paper Rad dvd, two zines, and a poster for $35. Not a bad deal. I might have to check that out.
Thanks for the heads up. I haven't been to that site in a while.
You gotta at least spend 50 to get the CF totebag!
Ganzfeld 7? Awesome. Comics Comics 4? Awesome Awesome.
That new Vermilyea zine looks great. His story in the new Mome was awesome. He's really becoming one of my favorites.

I think I might just try and spend 50 bucks to get that totebag. It looks pretty cool.
Here's my order at the moment:
Cold Heat Specia 4 & 5
Progress Quest
Core of Caligula
Good Life
Princes of time
Bycice Fluids
Comics Comics 3 & 4
Icanto
We Lost the War But Not the Battle
I might pick up some other random stuff just for the hell of it depeding on the price.

Yeah they started discounting a lot of stuff.
the Cold Heat Special #4 went from $3 to $1.
Comics Comics #3 is just #0.50 and #4 is $1.50.
Core of Caligula is $1.30
The Good Life is just a dollar now.
Goddess of War is $8.95.
Not bad deals so far. I'm guessing more stuff will get changed later on. I'll end up spending $50 for sure.

Man Progress Quest and Bycicle Fluids are sold out. I think I figured out everything I'm gonna get.
Has anybody heard much about the Goddess of War by Laura Wienstien? I read a review that had some interesting looking preview art.
If anybody hasn't checked out Cold Heat, 1-800-MICE, or some of the tabloid comics now is a great time. Most of them are just $1 a piece.
I really want to order the Ganzfield but I've already got a $50 order. Add on to that $105 for KE 4&7, that's a lot of money dropped on some comics. But it looks really good.

Awesome, I'm still not too crazy about the main cover (mostly the way the people are drawn, I like the amazing, subtle thought/speech balloons), but the rest looks fantastic. I really love these YALE anthologies.
I got Comics Comics 4 the other week, which has a great essay by Sammy Harkham about single issue comics. It's fantastic.
My gf got me a birthday sketch from Adrian Tomine!
I want the new Ghost World edition. Not so much because I want a hardcover treatment of the story, but for all the extra comics and illustrations. I wish it didn't have the movie script, I don't need that... Otherwise, that simple cover is so great.

All the issues of Cold Heat are just a buck I think. Storeyville by Frank Santoro is just 10 bucks. Comics Comics #3 and 4 are 50 cents and $1.50 I believe. They have that Michel Gondry comic for $2.99, there's another by a Paul Gondry for $1.

I haven't been to the comic store this week. I also read that the new format would be similar to the format of the new omnibus L&R collections or The Comics Journal.
Did they just reduce the art for the new LOVE & ROCKETS issue, or are they going with the regular panel size but a different layout with less panels per page?

Hmmm, I had always thought they just reduced the pages, I hadn't considered them rearranging the panels.
That's another reason why I'm excited for the new book, the size. Was the recent Hopey Glass book in that size?
and Andreas, have you heard anything about english editions of Corto Maltese? It's been a year at least since I heard anything substantial.
Andreas
09-06-2008, 01:05 PM
I guess, if they haven't published it until now, there won't be a new edition of CORTO MALTESE in the next time. They had only planned to publish a black and white edition, which always struck me as wrong. All the European editions have been in color for more than two decades, and longer introduction pieces have been added to the latest editions. Kult Editionen (http://www.msw-medienservice.de/kult/titel/corto/) is the German publisher and their just publishing it in a new hardcover edition.
THE EDUCATION OF HOPEY GLASS was a hardcover edition in the standard large format. It's the best comic book I've read this year. They changed the format with the issue that came out this week. Rearranging the pages is just a thought I had, because they did it once with LOVE AND ROCKETS VOL. 10.
It should be easier to get Fantagraphics titles at your local stores now. They signed an exclusive agreement with Diamond and in return Diamond should have all their comics in stock. I told my store to reorder LOVE & ROCKETS VOL. 2 #20 for me, which collected the New York Times strip in color. In a week I should know more.

THE EDUCATION OF HOPEY GLASS hardcover collects stories from L&R VOL. II #11-19 and focuses on Hopey in her new job as a teacher (of all things!) and on Ray and his relationship to Vivian the "Frogmouth."
Jaime Hernandez's previous hardcover volume, GHOST OF HOPPERS, collects stories from L&R VOL. II #1-4 & #6-10, and focuses on Maggie in her new caretaker job, Izzy Ortiz, and Vivian the "Frogmouth." I think Vivian is introduced in this story, I'm not sure. And the inclusion of Izzy should tell you that GHOSTS has some very dark moments. The two volumes complement each other very well, each one tells a full story or two, they tell you where all the characters are today, and it really doesn't matter which one you read first.
The rest of Jaime Hernandez's stuff from L&R VOL. II (#4-5) was collected with the final four issues of PENNY CENTURY in the DICKS AND DEEDEES hardcover. Well, that is except the "La Maggie La Loca" stuff in L&R VOL. II #20, which you should be able to order through your store.

Scott Morse has a new book - kinda autobio - coming out soon. Within the next two months, I believe. It's called TIGER TIGER TIGER.
Also, check out Amazon for Venice Chronicles by Enrico Casarosa. I think it's coming out near the end of this month or very early Oct. I can't remember.

oh, and Andreas ... my wife's buying me a copy of Venice Chronicles with a bookplate illustration by Enrico (50.00 package!) He said on his blog he's going to do single Yoga positions, similar to his page in Dice Tsutsumi's Sketch Travel book.
This sounds like fun :) (and you have a wonderful wife).
I'm looking forward to THE VENICE CHRONICLES ever since I've read it last year (following your recommendation).

I'd recommend SAMMY THE MOUSE #1 and #2 by Zak Sally ($7.95 each). The first issue came out a year ago.
The collection of the first three issues of TRAINS ARE MINT by Oliver East (http://www.606studios.com/bendisboard/showthread.php?t=141693) should be very good ($24.99). It hasn't shipped yet. A follow-up, collecting #5 and the contents of the never released #6-8, is announced for December 2008 under the title PROPER GO WELL HIGH. Issue 4 will be printed for the first time in 2009.
SOLANIN by Inio Asano ($17.99) and DISAPPEARANCE DIARY by Hideo Azuma ($22.99) are stories that deal with characters and their struggles in today's world, stories that people living today can relate to.

Woohoo! Enjoy reading it.
I got LOVE AND ROCKETS: NEW STORIES last week, and also LOVE & ROCKETS VOL. II #20. It's official now, you can order the Fantagraphics back stock through your comic store. :)
Perhaps also consider getting FLIES ON THE CEILING sometime soon, particularly because this story does not seem to be included in the LOCAS HC. We don't know if Fantagraphics intends to keep the old editions in print.
Andreas
I'm really enjoying it so far, so I'm taking my time with it. Hopey's story in the book was very endearing, despite my not being familiar with a lot of the new cast. I didn't think Jamie could make me care about these characters even more when they're grown up.
I'm going to start catching up on L&R again. I should get Flies before it's too late.
Andreas, do you remember a webcomic you posted to maybe last year or the year before, featuring a little boy in ah... foresty areas? It was watercolored, and had big open grids, and was probably Japanese?

I don't know, could have been MINUS about a little girl with magic powers. Ryan Armand ended it in July after 130 instalments. :(

I like how Jamie uses different narrative styles to tell the two stories in THE EDUCATION OF HOPEY GLASS. And his storytelling is so clear, and the transitions so smooth, and not a single line is wasted. I'd assume you particularly enjoyed the flashback. The panel immediately after the flashback is also brilliant. It must have been a very emotional moment for Hopey and this panel captures the way she feels and deals with it (or any of us would deal with it) perfectly.

Finally read trades 3-7 of Finder this week and it's so fucking fantastic. Talisman (Book 4) is the best out of the run, but the whole thing is captivating. I hope the wait for Book 8 isn't too long (and I SUPPOSE I could go to her website and read what she's put up for it, but reading comics online just isn't the same.)

You are right in assuming I liked the flashback, it was my absolute favorite part.

And Ben, I had a bad, bad slump last year, after I closed my sight. I think a break is healthy. It really is scary to be unproductive, and it actually drove me crazy for a while. yeah, it is rough. i have the general outline for this super long story and writing out scripts is a pain and i want to get down to drawing so i thought i'd do a little self contained prologue thing. i'm pretty sure i had an awesome idea, then 40 year old virgin was on tv and by the next commercial break it was gone.
ALSO, while we're all whining, i am having the toughest time designing the female lead of the book. i have never had so much trouble drawing girls, which has to be the ultimate cartoonist stereotype, right? haha, i can't draw girls! wahhh! but it's true! it's killing me. that's another reason i want to do this prologue - it would only be about the two main male characters.
times are tough.

Alright a few reviews:
Cold Heat Special #4- I was surprised to see it was a tabloid comic, Rugg's art looks great on the newsprint. It's a pretty strange story. I can't talk about how great Rugg's art looks.
Comics Comics #3 and 4- Both great issues. Really cool articles and cool comics. Sammy Harkham's article about the "death of comic books" was interesting.
Goddess of War- Pretty neat book. The story is pretty off beat, but it's cool. There's a big part of it about an Indian named Cochise. It's also pretty big. About the size of the Acme Novelty Library or so. I'll get the next volume, whenever it comes out.
Incanto- I can't say I completely understood it, but it was beautiful to look at.
The Michel Gondry comic is pretty good. His art is interesting to look at. I just like that fact that he did a comic book.
Pig Tales/ Cartoon Workshop- It's Paper Rad. Half the book is Ben Jones and the other is I'm guessing the girl from PR. There some interesting stuff.
Still need to read Storeyville and the Princes of Time.

I do a lot of that in class instead of taking notes. They don't all come out looking like gems, but it's practice I suppose. I'm trying to work with this style I guess I have going now. Trying to make everything flow and work better.

Picked up Pocket Full of Rain today. I've flipped through it, there are some interesting strips in it. I haven't read any of the longer pieces yet. It's wierd looking at his non-animal art.
Edit:
Oh and I also flipped through the Ghost World Sepcial Edition. There's some really neat extra stuff, but I couldn't justify buying it.

Let me know how it is. As weird as it sounds, I've been a little scared to get it because I don't want it to be the one blemish on Jason's nearly perfect record in case I don't like it.
I saw that. It looked great but I'm not even that big of a fan of the book.

Angst? What a waste that was. Jason must be their God over there because that stuff looked like bad American alt comics of the late 80's.

I do a lot of that in class instead of taking notes. They don't all come out looking like gems, but it's practice I suppose. I'm trying to work with this style I guess I have going now. Trying to make everything flow and work better.

haha, same here. My notebooks are lousy with drawings of the backs of people's heads.
I chceked out Pocket Full of Rain from the library over the summer. I didn't like it so much.
My practice mini went really well!! now hve a 98% complete copy in my possession. I figured out centering and printing double sided pages, the hard parts were just keeping things aligned and cutting all the pages to the same length. It's gonna suck to make like 60 of them (BUT I did do all this in my campus library, so it'll probably be easier at a copy place with the right kind of cutting materials).
anyway, I'm really happy about this, I'll let you guys know when I start doing mass production. This weekend I'm going to practice printing the cover.

yes! let's get some pictures!
whats the size of the book? how much did you have to cut? how bad was the alignment? i always have problems with that and just kind of go, "whatever" but how did you fix it?
yes, i am too busy to make comics so i am living the dream through you!

hahaha, vicarious mini completion!
The size is about 5 7/8'' x 4 1/4''. The alignment is pretty right on, actually. I used a template, the only thing is sometimes an edge of a page will have a line where the original page ended when i scanned them on the templates.
I had to cut quite a bit, but a lot of it was harder than it had to be. Since the templates were the tiniest bit off, I had to use a cutting board for big chunks and then proceed to use my pocket knife and a ruler!! But, for the real stuff, I'll have sturdier templates, and as I said, better cutting stuff (the sliding knife at kinkos!)
So, the mini is actually pretty even! It's just nice to look at, and reads fine, nothing is cut off or anything. I'm a bit hesitant about pictures, just because i don't want to spoil the cover (even if it's not finalized)! But, I'll post a couple later anyway.
But yeah, this mini will fit into your back jean pocket.

I should have cut down Rapscallion #4 but didnt. Now I don't really have access to something that's good to cut with. With the next one I'm going to start to address problems like that. Making sure everything looks the best it possibly can. I've looked past problems with others, but I'd like to have stuff look exactly like I want it.

Yeah Rapscallion #4 (44 pager with I think like 6 in color), Otis #9, and YAY COMICS! (that's the free one with stories from different comics, it also comes with a mini catalogue.)
I also have copies of Mathbots and Rapscallion #1-3.

Sketchcrawl! not only will it help with your people, but with the amount of detail you might add to an everyday object for things like texture. Go draw buildings, people, and objects. It really does enhance an artists mental library.
People watching is fun. Whenever I'm out, I'll sketch a couple people, if I'm at Borders, or the mall or chilling in an eatery and I see some interesting people, I'll whip out the ol' Fabriano and sketch them.
I've got to ask, Ben, what about your style are you changing? I'm always interested in that kinda stuff.

I wasn't too keen on the non-animal stuff. Only one or two stories I liked. I don't remember what I didn't like about it, I just remember not liking most of the book.
It's like reading two different people, I think, because the writing style is different, too.

i'd say it's mostly a case of trying to loosen the rules on how i draw people. when you draw only a few kinds of head shapes and a few kinds of noses, one or two very different ones kind of stand out, which means all your characters look alike. but if you widen the range of whats acceptable in your universe, there's more room to make people look different, if that makes any sense. i'm also trying for fewer headshots as panels where all you see is a word balloon, a head, a neck, and shoulders. i want to do more wide angle shots. i want more shots with multiple people in them. i want more detailed backgrounds. and the whole thing's going to be black, white, and a single color of grey, kind of like how the blue was used in ghost world.
phew.
anyway, i just ordered kramers 3 for like $7. i'd imagine its pretty awesome, right?

I've been thinking about the same thing. Looking over stuff I realized how much I relied on that.
I'm going through dry spell right now. It sucks hard, but it's giving me time to figure out what I want to accomplish.

and thats too bad about #4 but hopefully itll have a sweet harkham story in there? maybe?
and here's a little thing i drew for this book i'm working on. i'm trying to work a little bigger and then shrinking things down to crisp things up a little. and this was freehand, so yeah. and i did the gray right on the page - when i actually do the book, i'm going to do it black and white and gray it on photo copies so i can have some room for error. anyway, its not much, but i'll try to post something here every now and then:

I definitely need to work on varying my character design, and especially getting rid of the head and shoulders panels. I could probably count the number of non-head and shoulders panels I've done in the vs. the world thread on one hand.

oh, and POCKET FULL OF RAIN was kinda good. It's not as good, IMO, as Left Bank Gang or Low Moon. I got the chance to read it when it came out, at Borders. The normal human stuff was only so-so to me.
The best way to explain it is that it felt like reading two different people merging into each other. Cause in the middle, he draws a couple shorts with normal humans having a conversation with dog people (in, like, a diner) and you can feel it gell over, then the rest of the stories are typical Jason we know.
The non-amaorph wasn't really my favorite and kinda made me wish he'd have redrawn those stories for the book in his anamorph deadpan style.
