I just listened to the Wordballoon interview with him, and he seemed like an interesting guy. The only thing of his i read was the first 2 issues of Bite Club, but i didn't care for it.

I have about 70 bucks store credit on mycomicshop.com and i was thinking of checking out some of his other work, they have Black Kiss and American Flagg for pretty good prices. Any other recommendation.

From recent examples of his art, I have to admit, I don't think this guys style is for me

He is an acquired taste, I must say. At first I didn't care much for his art, but now I love it.

The only reason I'm still buying the book.

How many issues is The Shadow series?

4 issues. It is faithful to the originial mythos, while updating things for the 80's. And it is very much a product of the 80's.

Not a big DC fan, who's writing it?

Oh, also, try out American Century, which DC put out for a few years. Good stuff, and most of the run is in trades.

Walter Simonson, BUT..... he's not doing a very good job.

I've heard of that. I didn't realise that was a Chaykin book.

Definitely grab the first few American Flag issues, and start there!

Then his four issue Shadow mini.

He's got a fun short story in Batman: Black & White #1. (That whole series is swell, by the way.)

He's also got a Batman Elseworlds, called Batman: Dark Allegiances.

I'd say that's a good start for some Chaykin superguy fun!

Perhaps I'll eventually grow to like it then, at the moment I probably don't fully "appreciate" it

He did the some early starwars books from marvel. Perhaps not the best Chaykin stuff but still really fun.

I've already decided on the first twelve issues of American Flagg.
How many issue of that did he write?

He wrote and did most of the art for issues 1-26. Alan Moore wrote a back-up feature in issues 21-26, and wrote all of 27 (It may well be the single worst thing Moore ever wrote). Chaykin was back with issues 28-31. Steven Grant co-wrote issue 31, and took over the title with issue 32. J.M. DeMatteis co wrote for a while,a nd then took over the title. Chaykin returned to end the series with issues 47-50.
He then relaunched the title as Howard Chaykin's American Flagg, wich ran for 12 issues.

The first 12 issues of AF rank right up there with Dark Knight and Watchmen as one of the best sereis of the 80's.

In 2005 he did "City of Tomorrow" for Wildstorm. Storywise very close to his American Flagg, IMHO.

His issue of the DC anthology title SOLO (#4) is also very good.

you were correct to get american flagg 1-12. one of the best mainstream comic series ever. another great story that chaykin wrote is called TWILIGHT. it's a 3 issue prestige format mini drawn by jose luis garcia lopez. it involves all of DCs sci-fi characters from the 50s and 60s at the end of the universe.
