I didn't see one up yet, so I figured I'd start one (mods if there is one just merge me?).

Ok feel free to share tips, advice etc, but use spoilers for plot and stuff!

Us anybody else playing this? Is anybody else pissed at the god damn snipers? AND THE FUCKING CAMERA CONTROLLS!

My friend bought this Thursday and already took it back to Gamestop for store credit yesterday.

I hope Squeenix loses a ton on this one. What a piece of garbage.

12 is higher on my list. I love Vincent but it's gotten some lackluster reviews.

I know several people who love it. I'll wait and see. Either way, I hope they make something on this. Consider the big picture. I would love to see Square become more proficient at making games that aren't RPGs. Their ability to tell an emotionally involving story should not be relegated to one genre. But it's gradual. And I have heard things about the suits who call the shots in Square, and their relationship, or lack thereof, with the creator personnel, the gist of which seems to be that if this bombs big time, we won't see anything but RPGs again for a long while.

I prefer to see it in terms of what is possible, rather than one strike and you're out. I could go on for hours discussing game companies whose first attempts, or whose first attempts in new genres, weren't successful, but who improved over time.

I'm all for innovation and new games in the genre. I wanted to LOVE this game so much, but just minutes into playing with it and getting slaughtered because of the damn camera did not bode well....

And I completely agree with the first effort of a new type being forgivable, but DAMN this is so subpar it feels like an EA licensed tie-in game. I really would have think Square would have taken some notes after some of their PSOne non-RPG failures.

Make note of the comments about the upper echelon. Those delays Square is famous for aren't granted willingly. Apparently, they are only tolerated because they know they will make money. If what I've heard is true, I hope something gives, because I expect we're seeing the results in the fact that the FF license is being spread thin for profit.

This isn't the first Square attempt at a new gametype though. Doesn't really bode well for the theory that they can do things other than RPGs. Not that it matters much since the RPGs are almost always awesome.

55% average on Metacritic isn't going to make me run out and buy it at full price. Picked up SuperRobot Taisen: Original Generation instead. That game rocks and will hold me over until Disgaea 2 arrives in the mail.

I can't wait for Disgaea.... although I'm afraid how much of my time it's going to eat up. That EGM review makes it sound like this sucker is PACKED with stuff to do.

The biggest, by far. But DAMN, that is easily one of the worst cameras I've ever fought against. I've played fixed camera Capcom games that were easier to manipulate.

noo the official story is that vincent never hooked up with Lucrecia, Hojo killed/modified him because Vincent's affection for Lucrecia was getting in the way of the experiment (Hojo impregnated Lucrecia with the jenova cells, Vincent objected, got turned into a freak).

from wikipedia
Vincent is the son of Grimoire Valentine, a Shin-Ra scientist. As an adult, Vincent became a member of the Shin-Ra Company's Turks, a group of highly skilled operatives who specialized in various activies such as espionage, kidnapping, assassinations and serving as bodyguards. When he was assigned to supervise a project spear-headed by his father, he fell in love with a scientist named "Lucrecia Crescent," an assistant to her father. However, despite his feelings for her, they parted ways when Grimoire died saving Lucrecia's life. Vincent would later meet her for a second time while assigned to supervise the Jenova Project in Nibelheim, where she was serving as an assistant to Professor Gast. There, Vincent tried expressing his feelings to her, but she rejected him out of guilt over Grimoire's death, ultimately entering a relationship with her associate Hojo instead. Lucrecia became pregnant afterwards, supplying a test subject for the Jenova Project's intentions to investigate the effect of Jenova cells on an unborn child.

Vincent objected to the use of humans—especially Lucrecia and her unborn child, whose parentage he was uncertain of—as live test subjects. Even so, in the interest of science, Lucrecia proceeded with the treatment and suffered various ill effects as a result. Outraged, Vincent confronted Hojo in the Shinra Mansion's underground laboratory and a heated argument ensued. Hojo ended this confrontation by pulling a gun from his lab coat and shooting Vincent down in cold blood. Vincent's body was placed in a large experimental capsule for use in Hojo's experiments based on Lucrecia's research of the Lifestream, originating from the time of her assistance to Grimoire. While Hojo's experimentation resulted in Vincent's anatomy being altered to where he could temporarily change his physical form into monsterous enities

from Hoko's wiki

Hojo's notoriety begins approximately thirty years prior to the start of the game in Nibelheim, where he was sent by Shin-Ra to assist Professor Gast and Lucrecia with the Jenova Project, a project headed up by Gast and intended to produce modern day humans with the abilities of the Cetra.[10] It was believed that this goal may be realized by testing the effects of Jenova cells on an unborn child. Thus, the three Shin-Ra scientists — with Lucrecia and Hojo's complete cooperation — injected some of Jenova's cells into the womb of Lucrecia, who was pregnant with Hojo's child at the time.[11] The child that would come of this experiment was Sephiroth. At some undisclosed point in time, Gast abandoned his research due to a guilty conscience[12] and Hojo continued his increasingly immoral experiments, first at Nibelheim and, later, the Shin-Ra building, using such unwilling test subjects as Vincent, Cloud, Zack, Red XIII, and uncounted others. Much of this later research involved the effects of Jenova's cells, leading to the development of the Sephiroth "Clones" Project (not to be confused with genetic duplicates; the term merely indicates that experiments similar to those conducted on Sephiroth were condcuted on ordinary humans[13]). Ultimately, Hojo tired of experimenting on others and injected himself with Jenova cells, mutating into a super-being and willingly attempting to give Sephiroth the power of the Planet so that he could witness his most esteemed experiment reach its ultimate stage of development.[14] While attempting to carry out this process, he was mortally wounded by AVALANCHE and was left for dead.

The Game was far from perfect, but being a hardcore Gungrave gamer and Vincent fan, it was worth playing through. The backstory for Vincent was freaking awesome. I hope they do an OVA a la Last Order to detail Vincent first joining the Turks, becoming an expert gunslinger, and his relationship with his father.

I just rented this last night and I'm playing through it right now. I'll probably pick it up when it drops in price, but it's definately not worth full. Haven't played it much but I agree that the camera angles leave a little to be desired. Still, I don't think it's the trainwreck everyone's making it out to be. It's definately playable, just takes some practice I think.

And anyone who thinks Square can only make traditional RPGs...have we already forgotten about Kingdom Hearts? Actually, I'm surprised this game didn't take more notes on how smooth KH2's battle system was.

Playing it some more and getting the hang of the controls. Not really understanding the hate this game is getting. Sure, it's not a sure-fire classic like God Of War or Devil May Cry, but it's still fun for what it is once you get the hang of it. Nice graphics and story, too.

I left the controls the same and got the hang of them on the second try. At least you can adjust the camera angle unlike most third person platform games. That's the one thing that annoyed me about the Resident Evil franchise and, to a lesser extent, Devil May Cry. I dunno, I could see buying this for about $30. It's fun enough.
