Well I said I'd do it. Here's an excerpt of the press release I've sent to local media.
++++
To celebrate the release of DC Comics’ Manhunter issue #25, Zeus Comics in Dallas Texas is giving away the first 200 copies free!
“We’re passionate about Manhunter. What better way to turn comic readers onto this amazing book than by giving it away,” Zeus owner Richard Neal said.
“This not your typical super-hero comic. Writer Marc Andreyko has created a dark rich world of crime and punishment,” Neal said. “We’ve been fans since issue #1, but impending cancellation of the series required a dramatic effort.”
Manhunter was on the chopping block at DC, but a much-publicized “Save Manhunter” write-in campaign gave the series a reprieve. “Manhunter has been given an extension to issue #30 and we want you reading this book!” said Neal.
Zeus is known for giving away comic books to draw attention to the medium and local publishers. This past May, Zeus passed out 5,000 free comics as a part of the national event Free Comic Book Day and its own creation, CAPE, the Comic and Pop-culture Expo.
For local publisher Viper Comics, Zeus has given away a couple hundred copies of its books Dead at 17 the Protectorate and Karma Incorporated. “That event was a turning point for our comic book," Karma Incorporated writer David Hopkins said. "People who may not have otherwise picked up our book, had it in their hands, enjoyed it, and came back for the rest of the series. I couldn't have asked for a better situation."
Manhunter #25 hits shelves Wednesday August 16th and the first 200 copies of Manhunter are free. Zeus Comics is located at 3878 Oaklawn Ave near downtown Dallas Texas.
Zeus Comics is the 2006 winner of the Will Eisner’s Spirit of Retailer award, the comic book industry’s equivalent to the Oscar.
