From AICN:
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with some great news! I love the original 3:10 TO YUMA, the 1957 film based on Elmore Leonard's western story of two men, one a desperado, the other his captor, who match wits while waiting for the train to take the bandit to justice.
WALK THE LINE's James Mangold is directing this new film and the rumor a while back was Tom Cruise and Eric Bana were sniffing around the project. I would have loved to have seen that, especially if Cruise slipped into his COLLATERAL mode and played the bandit. We reported on that back in February. Now, it looks like two other actors are in place.
Russell Crowe and Christian Bale are now the leads in the film... at least, Crowe is. Word is Bale hasn't signed yet, but he's in final negotiations. I am also someone who loves Sam Raimi's vastly underrated QUICK AND THE DEAD. That movie is great, but is somewhat crippled by Sharon Stone's participation. Everybody else in that film is great, especially Russell Crowe's early role as a gunslinger turned preacher who is forced to take part in the quick draw competition by Gene Hackman.
Ever since seeing that movie, I've been dying to see Crowe in a western. I'm happy that a straight up and up western is now in the works. I'd love to see that genre come back. I can't wait to see Bale and Crowe match wits! This could be a great one!!!
It'd be kickass to see these two in a flick together let alone a western. Crowe was hella cool in Quick & the Dead (which I agree is also underrated).
Bale in a western... cool.
I see nothing but potential.
