I'll never understand why some people think that being open minded means that you have to give bullshit the same weight as everything else. Being open minded means that you are open to new ideas and the possibility that you may be wrong. Not that you have to accept every single idea as equally valuable and can't call a piece of crap a piece of crap.

Ben and I had a little fun when he posted on this the other day...LOL, museum for dumb people. I still giggle about that one. Seriously, other than 6 year olds I can't see why anyone would honestly go there for actual knowledge.

Absolutely I would go. Why? I work in Museums and I love visiting others to see what's going on, what's good/not so good, etc. My sister and her kids live a few miles away in Cincinnati so once it opens I will be sure to visit it with her kids in tow. To be sure, I am not a creationist, so I have every intent of touring around the exhibits pointing out what is right, what is wrong, and what is conjecture. Ironically, I had a conversation with religious coworker today about this very subject. Even he think's it's laughable. About a year ago I had an exchange with some tourists where I pointed out a sculpture of a dinosaur and made an offhand comment about dinosaurs being millions of years old. The little kid told me that they didn't beleive that and that dinosaurs were "angels cast down from heavan to Earth." I was so dumbstruck I had no response.

Brad N.
08-03-2006, 10:18 AM
Huh. That's a new one to me.

Having been a former Evangelical myself Brother I could tell you some good ones. I've heard them all. From Dinosaur bones being put here by God to test our faith to them being fake all together. I've heard that Dinosaurs lived alongside man (apparantly what will be taught at this "museum") but died during the "flood". I've also heard they rode on the Ark with Noah too. Just silly tales for weak minded individuals who refuse to accept the fact that our planet is indeed more than 6,000 years old.

MIKE D

Because it comes from a desire to hurt and mock people, rather than educate and enlighten them.

The schools systems TRY to educate and elighten people. Then adults with the same mentality as these "museum" operators go ahead and change the curriculum to promote their agenda over scientific fact. As long as the need for this willful ignorance is entrenched into their religious identity (and the sad part is, it doesn't need to be that way), there is very little education can do at that point.

Brother, you're a smart fella. We've gone back and forth on occasion and I really don't mean to hurt or mock you in any way. I actually respect you and enjoy most of our discussions. Having been involved heavily in the Assembly of God church for many years as a teen (I even went to Bible College briefly where I was going to be a youth pastor) I know both sides of many of these arguments. I can respect your opinion on religious matters (I may not agree, but I can respect that) but this is not one of those cases. A museum devoted to misguiding and flat out lying to people in my mind is foolish. Even if you believe in a form of creationism to take things so literal and say the Earth is just 6,000 years old and al the rest is beyond belief.

John Morris, president of the Institute for Creation Research in San Diego, an organization that promotes creationism, said the museum will affirm the doubts many people have about science, namely the notion that man evolved from lower forms of life. “Americans just aren’t gullible enough to believe that they came from a fish,” he said.

But they are however gullible enough to belive that dinosaurs were wiped out by a flood since there was no room for them on the Ark.

To the best of my knowledge, those places do not actively encourage ignorance.

It would be different if it was just a museum about the Bible, or even one that recreated scenes from the Bible. I wouldn't go, but I woudln't have much to say about it, either.

But from what I read, this place presents itself as "scientific" and actively denounces real science. That's why I have more disdain for this place than those hall of fame dealies.

The origin of life can only be speculation. There are no eyewitnesses to the event.

Both sides of this debate show a degree of arrogance, as though they know exactly what happened, and that they have the entire process mapped out. Meanwhile, I just read last week that geologists are once again re-calculating the age of the Earth. So obviously we don't know everything.

Are they revising it down to a few thousand years?

I think any geologist or evolutionary biologist would admit that they don't know everything ("we don't know" is actually one of the most common things I've heard scientists say), but they do have a great deal of empirical evidence to support their claims.

I have no problem with faith. Just keep it out of the classroom and the science textbooks.

Right...recalculating in the what? Millions? Billions?
The Earth isn't 6,000 years old, and you'd be very, very (insert insult here) to believe that.

I've got two cages that should be fucking up a storm for the next couple days. I'll probably paint-mark two more sets to release in two more cages this weekend.

The ones that emerged that couldn't be used I released. They're so cute when you open up the petri dish and let them go. They're all like "Oh, please, let me fly away so I can fuck and build a nest and die of exhaustion!"

So anyway, I'll try and explode those wombs for you this afternoon.

Take pictures of womb explosions.

I'm sort of scared of bees. I got chased by them a lot. But I do like the big bumblebees.

Smells better than backward, bible thumping jackasses spreading the word that the earth is a few thousand years old. Open mindedness doesn't really extend to entertaining grown adults beliefs in things like the Easter Bunny and Jesus' magic powers.
