I think Fatty got a bad rap and it's sad that he was blacklisted and had scandal follow his career. I think it's time to forgive the man. Oh, and Mel Gibson can eat a dick.

Most of the blacklisting and whatnot was thanks to William Randolph Hearst. It was pretty much debunked many times over, but Hearst kept on him to sell his papers. It's pretty sad, really.

In the last trial (the 4th I believe) of the supposed "bottle rape" Fatty was cleared of all charges. The previous trials were always hung. Fatty was actually making movies again when he died of a heart attack at a young age. I believe he completed at least one movie, maybe more. This is all coming from memory. The book I have is packed in some box in the back room. There have always been rumors about what actually happened. There is a faction that claim that Fatty was set up by "Big Hollywood" because he was the first actor that could make demands and get them because of his popularity. He was the highest paid of his time and the producers didn't like that their share of the pie was getting smaller. Of course we shall never know. Everybody connected with it is now dead.

yeah, I just thought about it because some douchebag on MSNBC earlier mentioned Arbuckle while talking about Mel. I also watched some documentary on him last weekend on cable. Sad story really.

The Forgotten Films of Fatty Arbuckle is a cool DVD set to pick up if you've got 50 bones. Pretty neat stuff. He made a lot of shorts and even made one sound feature with Warner Bros/Vitaphone that was funnier than hell. If he'd lived longer, he'd have made an even bigger impression than he previously did.

In a great Keaton documentary , Buster says he learned everything about movie making from Arbuckle.

He was a serious inspiration for Chaplin too.

During the trial, morality groups nationwide called for Arbuckle to be sentenced to death

God bless America.

Basically was accused of raping a girl and causing her internal injuries that she died of a few days later. He was found not guitly, but the whole scandal destroyed his career.

She wasn't raped, it was just said that he raped her. She died of a ruptured bladder that had nothing to do with a rape. Apparently, it was a whole blackmail thing being run against him, and when he wouldn't co-operate, they told the public he raped her.

Yeah, I'm reading a lot of links off this page. Hollywood in the 1920s was SCREWED UP! Makes what we have nowadays look hella tame....

Fatty Arbuckle was a genius and innocent of all crimes put against him.

Shame many people refuse to accept the truth and just put him in the group of "Hollywood nutjobs."
