Angel: Old friends. I read most of the Crossgen stuff:sad: . Love fights. Devil's Panties. Dead @ 17. Amelia Rules!. Dorothy. Barry Ween. Nuaghty Bits. Night Mary. And tons more that I can't think of.

The problem is that women tend to scrutinize stories. Comicbook stories aren't as laid out or full as a novel. I prefer Bendis Jinx over many of this other books because it was pretty detailed in story.
This you don't find in X-Men or other titles. I over look tons of plot holes and bad structures in the comicbooks because I love the characters. Most my gal pals that I try to influence into the comic world all have the same gripes about the books.
Most of their gripes tend to be my gripes which are the bad relationships aspect. I don't think there are many that are well 'done' outside the iconic ones of Lois Lane/Supes, Scott/Jean, Catwoman/Batman, etc....

Part of the reason why I love this city. I know at least 20 girls that actually read comics.
P.
Just about every lady friend I've had has read a wide assortment of comics (either on their own or intro'd to by me).
Spread the word!

We have experienced a great upsurge in female customers in the past few months since the remodel.
I chalk that up to a few things:
* the recent remodel of our store, generating lots of walk in business
* our customers bring in their girlfriends/wives/female relatives (heck in some cases its our female customers who bring in their men)
* having Shannon behind the counter
* friendly, outgoing staff that doesn't drool over the women, or act as if it is a 'big event' if they are in the store.
* knowing your customers names, and introducing yourself to 'first timers'. When some of our customers (whether they are male or female), they are surprised/happy to be referred to by name, especially if they have only visited one ot twice before)

That's just not possible!
Many of my female regulars read X-men comics, some read DC super-heroes like Batman and Superman. So I wouldn't be so fast to relegate female readers to manga or indie material. There is readership there of course. But there are also women that read the same things that the people making those statements read. Women who happen to enjoy comics on their own, not because a guy got them into it or anything. I see it every week.

Could we pull off a "bring your wife/ daughter to the comic shop day?" Would that be possible? Not a sale or anything, but just so that the better half could see what the hobby was about. Or would that be weird? Then again maybe the spouses like having their own seperate hobbies. Part of the escapism, maybe..

I got one woman addicted to Rocketo, Buddha, and just recommended Monster to her, as she wanted a 'darker' manga title.
I saw a woman yesterday I haven't seen in a long time. She remembered me, my recommendations, and said she missed me, and had been in a few times and inquired about me.
She comes in w/ her husband, and she doesn't like the superhero stuff. She prefers strong women characters, or characters rooted in historical situations.
I got her hooked on Age of Bronze, Beyond Avalon, Mouse Guard, and just yesterday introduced her to Castle Waiting.
Much like the menfolk, women like manga, indies, superheroes-- you name it...as long as the story is good.
You really can't pigeon hole women's reading, because they are as diverse in their taste and likes/dislikes as any other customer.

for the love of God, I need to read Y. and Jeffery said he doesn't know why he's still married to me because I have yet to read Kabuki. Even though we named the cat Kabuki, but that doesn't count since he got sick and we had to give him away. So, maybe in Chicago, I'll have to look for a new man. I think I already know someone who'd at least want to try out for the job!

To all those retailers and boyfriends/husbands looking to hook the ladies I can not recommend enough the manga and anime series Planetes. Great sci-fi combined with an amazing love story. The books are very different from the anime but both are powerful in their own right. Ian and I just devoured all the DVDs and were just stunned at how entertaining and smart these stories are.

thanks for the heads up/recommendation.
I have only recently jumped into manga, and although I prefer the darker stories (like Museum of Terror, Monster, Anne Freaks, Oldboy, and The Floating Classrom), I should give this a look so I can be a bit more 'well rounded' in my reading recommendations for my clientele.

My wife has only responded positively to Maus, otherwise she associates comics with the whole "pre-adolescent hobby" thing that a lot of people do. It doesn't help that all the women on the covers of comics look like Hooters waitresses, which kind of reinforces her stereotype.
However, she's a huge fan of superheroes in film (go figure) and she loves any halfway decent sci-fi movie. So I'm not complaining.

ha! that's my favorite place to shop! you get more stories there. Nobs, needs to put this one in ANL...we were in our LPS (haha) and we see this guy with no arms renting porn. it was a sad and liberating moment all at once!
another time one of my friends went with us and she and I were dying laughing at all the vibrators and toys. There was one (that I eventually bought and is a piece of crap) that was so heavy and had so many buttons we nicknamed the damn thing the club. We made a short commerical for it. "ladies, not only can it satisfy you like no man can (not), but you can also use it for protection! Not just protection from pregnancy and STD's, but burgalars as well! You heard me, single women of the world, you don't need a man! This will make all your dreams come true and keep you safe! Keep it by your bedside for that little itch or for things that go bump in the night!" We laughed so hard we had everyone in the store wanting to know what we were laughing about. The manager came across to the store to see what was so funny. She said she had never heard so much noise in there before. She offered us a job trying to sell toys on the weekend!

My fiancee loves comics as much as I do, and I actually find a lot of female comic lovers here in Cleveland, especially in Mayfield and on our west side at the shops I go to. Hell, two females I worked with have been comic fans and I didn't even know it until we were all talking about X3 one day. In general, the male comic lover population does vastly outnumber the female, but they are definitely out there! My fiancee's favorites include a lot of Warren Ellis stuff, his run on Authority, and Planetary. She's also a big Bendis fan, though her favorite book at the moment is New Excaliber strangely. She always liked Captain Britain because she's a big Arthurian Legend fan.

i can't believe people are actually agreeing to that horrific statement! what the fuck?! is this board filled entirely of misogynist assholes?! OF COURSE THERE ARE GIRLS WHO READ COMICS. i bet i have just as big a comic collection as all of you, AND I HAVE A UTERUS. Can you women-hating sexist pigs please emerge from the cave that you've obviously been living in, and realize that advances in the womens rights and suffrage movement have made it clear to MOST of the general public that WOMEN HAVE INDIVIDUAL PERSONALITIES. AS ALIEN AS THIS IDEA MIGHT BE TO YOU----BEING A WOMAN DOES NOT IMMEDIATELY DICTATE WHAT YOU ARE AND AREN'T ALLOWED TO BE INTERESTED IN.
Of course we don't...we just like to look at the pretty pictures. ;)
and WHAT do you MEAN by that?!

Dont get too bent out of shape. His post was sarcastic as we know we have a nice population of ladies that come here and post that read just as much as the guys do. He's just joking around, nothing to get upset about. Same with amy.. she's only kidding around.

sorry i just online ate a bunch of people, but it really generally sucks being a girl, going into a comic store and getting treated like some kind of extraterrestrial who doesn't know what the hell they're doing. i don't think this whole thread was a joke

wow...I'm a girl....it was called sarcasm....thus the winking guy. Of course girls read comics or we wouldn't be on this board. *sigh* Just relax...have fun. We're nice.
Edit: I do understand the frustration and yes there can be misogyistic tendencies, but this thread was pure sarcasm.

five out of the ten of my favorite people in comics are women
(Gail Simone, Pia Gurerra, Jen Grunwald, Jade from Cellar Door and Jamie P., manager and clerk at my LCS), half the people I see in the LCS are girls of varying age, half of the best conversations I've had over comics, superhero or not, have been with women.
I strongly believe that women not only read comics, but will overshadow male readership in my lifetime.

Has someone been misogyistic to you?
WHO did it? Do I have to bust some heads around here? I know I've been gone a bit, but no one.. and I mean NO ONE is misogyistic to my panda!

That IS when someone gives you a bad massage and it hurts more when they're done than before they started, right?

Hm, not to get too serious but when someone comes busting in charging mysogeny all willy nilly is it any wonder the boys are a bit skittish and weirded out when a woman turns up at the door?
Just as much as there needs to be changes to make more kids and women feel welcome in the shops and on the boards so do women need to be a little less defensive. That's not to say don't fight for what's right, just pick your battles because we're all having a good time here.

Ouch! Easy there, BlimeyBosun, I'm well aware that girls read comics, which is why I listed the thread under pop culture. I'd ask you if they have sarcasm on whatever planet you come from, but you made it very clear how you feel about extraterrestrial treatment, so I won't ask that.
No need to get nasty and upset. I think it's super cool that chicks are reading comics. Why would I want it any other way than that? HOT CHICKS, TOO!! I hope you don't yell at me for objectifying women, because I'm not, but the comic reading females are good looking women! Even if they weren't, it would still be really cool that they are out there reading comics.
It was only sarcasm on my part, and I'm sorry for not being clearer and upsetting you.

alright. granted, i overreacted...
but honestly, i dont understand why it is socially unacceptible to stand up for women....whether it was meant to be a joke or not...
and i'm not targetting this on anyone,
but if "humorous" comments were made against any other group, there would have been multitudes of people saying they were offended.
it just seems weird to me, to laugh along with something that was quite honestly, mean...and this entire forum has been really uncomfortable...these posts are either sarcastic and harsh, or centered around hot women. i dont know...maybe there should be some friendly threads, cause otherwise...there's really no point, for me at least.
sorry i caused this forum war...but...at the same time, i just really don't get why people would keep carrying out and adding their personal stories of "joking" insulting remarks.

When the people on the board make "humorous, sarcastic and harsh" comments about Christians, it's considered okay.

You may need to lurk some more because the people who are all joking in this thread know each other pretty well and they will be the first to tell you when women (or gays or blacks or hispanics or Canadians) are actually being insulted whoever does it gets jumped on pretty hard.
This thread did not start off as 'something that was quite honestly, mean', it's a joke thread and if you hung out here more you might have caught on to it. Most notably the attacks on anything that takes itself too seriously. Y'know, things like pomposity and political correctness. Self deprecation is a favourite as well.
I'm sorry if it's not your style. Maybe we all just watch too much Colbert Report or something but that's how we relate here sometimes.
Welcome to the board.
