After seeing this solicit and cover(mild possible civil war spoilers) http://marvel.com/catalog/?id=4799
I was wondering if there was more to the cancellation of the Thing series than just "poor sales".
I've heard that if the TPB sells well the series might be revived. This would take some time.
I'm wondering if due to CW events the Thing will be "radioactive" for a period of time that having his own book would hurt plans for major character developments in either FF or another series. I could see how major plans on the main book would override a book lower on the franchise totem pole (doesn't mean I'm happy about it). Of course, the flaw in the logic is why would Marvel editorial greenlight a book that would run into this problem less than a year into it's future. But stranger things have happened.
Thoughts?

I actually came to a similar conclusion myself when I saw the cover to FF... um, whatever one it is (540 i think?). It seems like Thing just refuses to fight so that could be a good time to shelve the comic for a while and see how the trade sells. If it sells well, they can bring Ben back in a Vol 2 type thing.
As for why they'd greenlight it only to "run into this problem" you speak of. They've already said a thousand times in regards to other books in lots of interviews that plans change at the drop of a hat. When The Thing was conceived as an ongoing, Civil War was either not in the pipeline or just coming together. So there was no way to judge what would be affected.
Bendis actually makes reference to it in the first part of his latest series of podcast interviews in regards to a question I asked about how much of his planned New Avengers run has he had t change due to Civil War.
Shit happens, but at least this gives a good place to give the Thing "a break" and see how his trade sells. In the long run, it could be the best thing to happen to the series.

I'm assuming that Thing is the character that "decides to retire" rather than take a stand. Sue is probably the one that joins the resistance, and this may actually lead to Reed and Sue getting a divorce. If Spider-Man is not the character that switches sides, than the upcoming cover solicitations showing him in his old costume fighting Iron Man have been very misleading. Somehow, I have a feeling that they will find a way to keep Spidey on the Avengers---if the not the New Avengers than the spin-off team that is supposed to form as a result. I know some old school Avenger fans have complained bitterly about Spider-Man on the team, but sales have improved too much for him to be shunted aside...
