View Full Version : Two things bugging me about Batman Begins

Ever since I first saw this movie in the theaters several things have really stuck in my craw about it. But two have stood out more than most. They have totally ruined the movie for me. I thought the first half was pitch perfect, but I really, really hated these two. If anyone could sufficiently explain these to me I would be much obliged and would re-watch the film with these new thought in mind, and possibly alter my opinion of it.

1- The Tumbler/Batmobile. The entire first half of the movie, Bruce is instructed in the ways of the Ninja, the art of invisibility. So his ninja car is a fucking tank? Ok, I get it, "theatricality". But there is a line between "theatricality" and bulldozing through cars. Also, the part when he's getting chased by the cops on the expressway. The cops are, literally, right next to him, and a chopper is right above them. So Batman turns off the lights. And magically, no other vehicles' lights can see him either? And the cops that were riding along side of him suddenly have no peripheral vision and cant see a fucking TANK riding alongside them?

2- The "foiling" of Ra's al Goul's plot. I'll keep this one simple. If the water vapor maker device reaches Wayne Tower, then Ra's wins and everyone in Gotham goes nuts. So "The World's Greatest Detective" decides to let the device crash...into the fucking basement of Wayne Tower?:frustrat:

I freely admit that I may have misunderstood what happened in these scenes because the action sequences had more cuts than a Hot Topic shopper's forearms. SO if someone could explain what I missed I'd greatly appreciate it, so I could enjoy the second half of the movie as much as I did the first.

I really can't argue with you on the first one, but as for this my only explanation is he wasn't the World's Greatest Detective yet. He was a very green Batman who really doesn't know what he's doing quite yet. Very much the definition of "making it up as he was going along". Give him a few movies, he'll learn.

who cares?

the fact that the microwave device didnt vaporize the water in your body, only focused on the water in the pipes didnt bother you at all?

wait, my bad.... that was so ludicrous i think we all chose to ignore it so much that it was wiped clean of our memories....

no, but seriously, other than that, fantastic movie........

Ok, I'll give you that, but why didn't the plot work? I mean technically Ra's device got where it needed to go, no? and it was in working condition before it crashed into the ground. When it was going through the city, the vaporization was instantanious once the El car went over the sewer pipes. So it should've happened here too, right? It just comes across as sloppy writing.

The only thing I can possibly think of-and this is a REACH-the basement had some kind of special mineral shielding in the walls that blocked the emitter....

The only thing that really bugged me about this movie was Barbara Gordan was either Jim's wife or his infant daughter...

Is it possible to get more nitpicky than that?

I totally blame Miller for that. He fucked up Gordan's family in Year One, so the screenwriter didn't have an accurate bible to work with in the first place.

Plot holes and tank mobile I can deal with. What really bugged me about the movie ( I love it by the way, it's just me being nit picky) is that what makes batman scary as an opponent is not his gear or his martial prowess, it's the fact that he's a freaking genius. Yes, I know he is very green in the movie but I think half of the suggestions from Alfred should've been coming from bruce and alfred agreeing, instead of vice versa, like the line about modifying the southeast wing at the end.

I for one loved this movie(even Katie Holmes couldn't ruin it).
I will only defend the tumbler, at first I hated it . But it makes sence to have a fast tank in urban warfare. Not the cool sportscar we are use to but a more realistic approach to the batmobile. I know there is stuff in every comic book movie that will drive you crazy. You can't please verybody and let's face it these movies are made for the general public and not for us "hardcore fans". As long as the get the big stuff right, why sweat the small stuff. At least we have comicbook movies, not too long ago no one was doing superhero movies.

I thought Katie was pretty decent in this movie. The scene where she found out Bruce had a gun was quite compelling, at least to me.

But this isn't small stuff like reducing one of my favorite Batman villains (Zsasz) to a shadow of what he should be. I totally understand that sacrifices must be made for the sake of the medium. But ginormous plot holes that still bug me a year after seeing it in the theaters are not small things. Especially the ending. That ruined the entire movie for me because I can;t believe that it would've worked.

I'm also in the Pro- Katie Holmes camp.

I'll be VERY disappointed if she's not in the sequel. Plus i think the Bat-Films need a female lead to stick around for a bit or else she'll just feel like another disposable Bond Girl. There as a plot point and not much else.

You're thinking too much.

It's funny when I watched it the first time I really liked it and thought they did a fantastic job, then upon second viewing I noticed some stuff that just seemed lame, lazy storytelling, stuff that was just left out there...I don't know. I went in with such low expectations that when I really enjoyed it I thought they made a great Batman movie. Well I wouldn't say great, but it was definitely entertaining and good, warts and all.

Initial reaction to cast and director was good, the trailers I saw threw me on the fence, but I wound up digging it.

I don't get the hate for the Bat Voice... he's some rich kid for most of his life. Of course he's going to try to talk all bad ass like every movie he's ever seen and do a bad job at it. Give him a couple more years, he'll have it down.

I thought the usage of a cheesy voice like that was quite realistic.

My biggest problem with the movie was the superweapon, which could evaporate water dozens of feet away, penetrating through steel and gravel to do so, but left the sentient sacks of water surrounding it entirely intact.

The biggest problem with both movies is the over-elaborateness of the supervillain plots in the third act. It's much better in TDK, but Joker's plot still relies far too much on coincidence.

okay, that bothered me, but i think i can provide you with a simple enough explanation for the ending.

when the train crashed into the ground at the end, before impacting wayne tower, the machine itself was damaged and stopped working. thus, by the time it reached its target destination, it was no longer emitting the microwave frequencies that would cause all of the water vapor in gotham to evaporate.

I thought the Tumbler was the car equivalent of a Stealth Jet, so with all the angles and the flat black paint, it would be rendered invisible at night.

That part didn't bug me, but I still can't figure out why it was a "victory" for Batman to blow up the water vaporizer thing. I thought that was what he was trying to avoid. But I see Chris has explained it above.

Umm, he switched to the electric engine, turned the lights off, and the entire car is jet black, at night.

The electric engine made him soundless, and also made him slower, so the cop cars sped ahead of him, while he simultaneously dropped out of the spotlight. As soon as he got up next to one of the cop cars, they spotted him.

Pretty simple.

okay, so i just re-watched begins. and ryan's explanation stands. you can see the batmobile drop off in speed behind the cop cars clearly, as it goes into stealth mode, but it is immediately noticed when the cop looks to his left.

regarding my explanation, i think the microwave emitter could still be said to have been damaged in the fall. however, i would also add that i don't believe the machine ever reached wayne towers. it fell, the train crashed through the street a good 1-2 blocks before wayne tower and slid through what appeared to be a parking garage. the microwave emitter then explodes.

The bat voice is the No. 1 goofy thing about the Batman movies, IMO.

I hear people complain about this a lot, but Bruce wayne is a public figure who is frequently giving speeches and soundbytes due to his business and charity work. He would have to disguise his voice, even if it comes off a bit corny, it serves to better protect his identity

Sure, but he'd also probably use a full mask with voice distortion built in instead of one that reveals a large portion of his face.

I have to admit, you cut an imposing figure up there.

But then you couldn't see him acting.

Not simple at all cause it brings up another question, why did he keep pace with the cop cars so they could spot him again ,and why switch from "stealth mode"

I was thinking the same thing. Plus it's a high speed chase, kind of like taking your eye off the ball for a second.
