You know, they're my all-time favorite band and I don't think I could pin them down to a single song. But it ain't Cooky Puss.

Have you heard the anthology version, with the Hendrix samples that they couldn't clear for Check Your Head?

I had it on EP back when I was in junior high.

I'm thinking the best song is something off of Check Your Head, but I can't narrow it past that.

I have a friend who, since before I met him, has randomly quoted the bit "A cooky puss -- HEY!" for no reason. His wife never understood what the fuck he was talking about until yeeeeears after they met when we were all in a car together and some one put that CD in. It was amazing, watching the realization hit...

Colin and I often sing "take me home and eat me -- YEAH!" to each other.

Yup, very cool.

and on a related note, I'm a big Hendrix fan myself, and there was a bootleg release years ago that had Jimi starting a song in the studio then stopping suddenly to ask the engineer to adjust the volume in his earphones, but he instead calls them his eargoogles then starts laughing. I always assumed thats where MCA got that term, which he uses in at least two Beastie songs. i.e. "Strap on my eargoogles and I'm ready to go" I always liked MCA even more after making that connection.

True story: A friend and I got thrown out of the 7th grade talent show for lip syncing that song. Well, specifically for the lewd gestures he made during the "whiffle ball bat" bit.

I was 11. I didn't even know what the hell he was doing! :?

Oh man I love me some Beatie Boys. Gotta go back to Liscensed to Ill. Everything else is just gravy on those potatoes.

I also agree that I cannot pick a favorite song by them. The whole body of work is too good.

It's funny because Brass Monkey is the only Beastie Boys song I'm tired of hearing now. But that's because it got overplayed. In fact, it still gets overplayed. A local radio station does a 5:00 blastoff and that song is played regularly on it. Really a shame as it's a great song. I just can't take hearing it anymore.

The original EP? Old!

It was originally released in 1983 and, while an interesting moment from their extremely early years, it's merely eh as far as great Beastie songs go.

I love "looking down the barrel of a gun" or "rhymin and stealin" those songs fucking rock, how could you not love a song that samples "sweat leaf" and "when the levee breaks" at the same time. The only sample that comes close is Ice T mixing "black sabbath" with "when the levee breaks".

Id also be willing to put almost any of their instrumentals. "the in sound from way out" is such an awesome compilation album.

But that quote was from "Hold it Now Hit it" and the whiffle ball bat bit is from "Paul Revere".
