I'm on page 981 right now and loving every panel. It's amazing how rich and engrossing a story Smith created especially considering it revolves around 3 very simple (art-wise) characters.
Not to mention the detail in his art. It's breath taking. Like his massive, details forest backgrounds or mountainscapes. Just amazing.

I'm about a third of the way through, and it's great.
This book has amazing depth for something that's ostensibly written for kids.

I own every single original Bone comic, but I might just buy the complete volume anyway. This was one of the best series of the last 10 years. Come to think of it, that would make a good present I bet. Yeah, Jeff Smith rules though, I loved Bone, and I miss it already. I hope Jeff has more projects lined up.

No spoilers, just some basic info.
The story is about 3 cousins from a place called Boneville. It starts out with them being ousted from Boneville because one of them (Phoney Bone) got the whole town upset (he's always scheming something). The other cousins are Fone Bone (your good-natured every man and the primary character) and Smiley Bone (a fun-loving goof).
Their trip out of Boneville leads them to a place they're unfamiliar with and lost in. They stumble across several people / creatures and make friends / enemies pretty quickly. As the book goes on, they find out a lot of hidden secrets about both their friends and enemies.
Eventually, a massive war breaks out and the Bones have to align choose sides and try to help their new allies for the sake of the entire world.
Smith's art is just fantastic and the characters are really deep and rich. It's a book that makes you laugh, makes you sad, and keeps you on the edge of you seat at times.
I'm on page 1001 and it's just blowing me away with each new page.
Here are a couple of shots to give you an idea of the detail of Smith's art:

Not the best scans, but it's difficult to scan a page from a 1332 page graphic novel.

one of the best books i've read in a long time. Its what the lord of the rings should've been.
if you want to read a massive amount of previews here they are.
http://www.boneville.com/library/
the book is set up in trilogy format- the first three books are book one- second three are book two thrid three are the final book. With that in mind- the first set is the most childlike- and the series gets crazy serious from there.
Jeff smith draws circles around most of the draftsmen these days. Hes truely gifted. If you ever checked out an old strip called 'pogo' by walt kelly and liked it- you'll love bone. Alot of Jeffs art style was drawn from kelly.
i'm kinda rambling.... but yeah- for like 40 bucks 1330 pages. You can't beat that.

yeah- pogo is the shit. I was hopeing someone would chime in with that. its hard to find people who like the older stuff when so many comic fans are all about the next full color flashy iron man pinup.

I read it as it was coming out, and I love that series.
The Complete Bone is the single coolest trade ever, a full (large) series in one volume for 40.00? Awsome.

Couldn't agree more. Best trade ever.
I've talked Bone to death in other threads. One of the best comics every made. Everyone who hasn't read it before should buy this trade.
