I have the Vol. 3 TPB coming in the mail today so I've been re-reading Vols. 1 & 2 as a refresher, and I caught a TON of cross references that I missed the first time around.

Then I found this site:

http://www.barbelith.com/faq/index.php/Seven_Soldiers

Wow.

The depth of interconnectivity is just astounding. I spent over 3 hours last night going through the annotations and find stuff I didn't even catch the second time through.

Like Misty in the Zatanna series - I got the Snow White reference but being saved by the Seven Soldiers (dwarves)? Wow.

Zatanna #3 and Guardian #4 were just absolutely brilliant. The way the original Newsboy Army figures into things is genius.

All along I had been feeling like the "One soldier must die!" shtick was very gimmicky, but the more I think about it the more I wonder how the timing might go down, noting the stress they are putting on the various failed teams of six.

This is the best series out right now - anyone on the fence thinking about checking it out should do it. And check out that annotation site I linked to above.

I tried reading a few of these and I just couldn't get into them... What makes them brilliant? I didn't get it.

A book that needs to be explained to the reader....

Yup sounds like a Grant Morrison Book to me.

or people who want to know more

I mean, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen has a whole book full of references and annotations.

Guess that means that everyone who wanted to know more about the story/the background is 'illieterate and dumb'.

Then again, if they are dumb and illiterate, I don't think they would be able to get to or read the site to which we are referring to, which kind of shatters your snarky theory.

So, Maybe October for the conclusion of the series?

he made a broad comment generalizing the work so i came back with a broad generalization. to be honest, these annotations enrich the works. when frankenstein quotes old works of literature i need some help with that, but i still have been able to follow seven soldiers without the annotations.

What he said.

The annotations aren't by any means needed to follow the series. But there was stuff they talked about that I didn't catch, small stuff like the Misty/7 dwarves thing I mentioned.

I picked up the first few issues, and then dropped it. It reads much better in trades. I've enjoyed it when it's all right there in one sitting.
