CybertronCinema.net (http://www.cybertroncinema.net) just posted a summary of a Q&A Transformers producer Don Murphy conducted on his boards.

Here're some of the highlights:
--Arcee, the female Autobot from the '86 movie, will be part of the cast, and is likely a motorcycle
--Prelim design work is underway
--The film will focus on five members each of the Autobot and Decepticon factions
--Optimus Prime, Megatron, Arcee, Soundwave, Bumblebee, Ratchet, and Jazz are confirmed
--Bumblebee will likely NOT be a VW Beetle due to licensing issues
--Hasbro demanded that Soundwave's size-changing ability be left in, which means Soundwave WILL likely be some form of portable media device
--The overlying theme of the film will be a "hidden war" wherein the 'Bots and 'Cons have been secretly warring under the noses of humanity for decades, and the secret gets out
--There's some debate as to whether Ratchet, the Autobots' medic, will be an ambulance or a fire/rescue truck
--Tentative production schedule: Final character selection next month, character designs finished July 1, pre-production begins Sept. 1, shooting begins Dec. 1
--No Quintessons (the five-faced aliens from the '86 movie) at least in this first film
--Dreamworks has filed licensing proposals with the major auto manufacturers
--The fight to cast Peter Cullen and Frank Welker (the original VAs for Optimus and Megatron) is uphill, Murphy wants them (BADLY), Hasbro and Dreamworks are indifferent, and the writers and co-producer Tom DeSanto want name actors in the parts
--The film will be PG or PG-13 and Hasbro and Dreamworks have placed no restrictions thus far in regards to violence
--There will be a cast of human characters (not just one) interacting with the Transformers
--The film will be set in the Southwestern U.S.
--Steven Spielberg is playing his part as executive producer VERY hands-on
--Michael Bay is nearly a lock as director
--The Decepticons will not be flight-capable in their robot modes
--ILM is being looked at for the movie's effects house
--The Transformers will each have fleshed-out personalities
--One of the main ten Transformers will very likely die in the film
--The Autobot Matrix of Leadership will figure into the larger overall plot
--Murphy intends to make Bay very aware of what the fans want (so far, original voice talent and the classic transforming sound effect is on the list).
--Soundwave's "cassettes" will be included; he and his tapes are being considered as one casting selection for the Decepticon roster

I thought Bay was already signed?

i still maintain that this will be alot of fun. and will look really cool. the key is getting as many voice actors as possible.

I think he pretty much is, though there are still some who say any announcements to that effect were premature.

I would like to see (hear) the original voices as much as possible. Make the human characters name actors. Otherwise, this is all good news.

Agreed. Sounds like this Murphy guy cares a lot for the property and is a big fan himself.

Wow, even if this is a bad movie, the visuals should be something else. How much fun will it be to have a Transformers Movie, and not be talking about a haphazard animated 90 minute commercial for new toys replacing old ones. Don't get me wrong, I love Transformers The Movie, but how cool will it be with a for-real budget and not some kids flick they throw on for matinee showings only.

I wonder if the car companies will let their cars be Decepticons.

Well, lessee...

Peter Cullen would do it if asked (probably needs a break from playing Eeyore in the last 4,000 Winnie the Pooh releases).

Frank Welker probably would also, Dreamworks can afford him, and since he does Soundwave and all the tapes, that kills a LOT of birds with one stone.

Jazz and Ratchet, obviously, would have to be recast, in light of Scatman Crothers and Don Messick, respectively, no longer being with us.

Susan Blu (Arcee) I think would be doable, she's still doing voice acting (last seen in the Astro Boy remake).

Dan Gilvezan (Bumblebee) has expressed interest.

Well.. ILM has to have something to work on after Star Wars..

As far as the cars go.. yeah, look at the Alternators series.. there's a few licensed Decepticon cars.

I just hope Soundwave isn't an iPOD.. that'd ruin it for me.

That is exactly what I thought of when I read "portable media device". That would be sooooo cheesy.

I think they would, as it's still good publicity.

Don't think it'd be an issue, Megatron's gonna be a tank, Soundwave's whatever portable media player (or otherwise) he's gonna be, and I imagine the rest will be jet fighters or other military hardware.

here's hoping they lock up Mark Wahlberg ASAP to sing "Touch" for the soundtrack.

That really looks comforting.

The only thing I'd want is for Megatron to still be a gun, but a tank is good, too.

Does anyone else see the irony in this?

If Soundwave's "tapes" are going to be in it, he'd have to be something with removable media.

That would mean, using current technology, either a minidisc player or a portable gaming device (GBA, PSP, etc.).

His minions could be killer disc or flash sticks!!

I know those shouldn't sound MORE ridiculous than a giant robot turning into a regular-sized tape player that ejects killer cassettes, but somehow...

If he is an iPod, they could always be mp3 files. I'm not quite sure how that'd work, but...
