View Full Version : Ipod died

So, my Ipod, I think, is dead. I followed all the online instructions on Apple's website. Nothing is helping. It won't even start up all the way, just keeps "wirring" "click "click click" and then restarts again. On Apple's website, it mentions that I can take it to an Apple store and they can tell me if it is virtually fucked or not. Anyone done this? It is out of warrenty, so I guess I will be shelling down the money for a new one....

Sounds like what happened to me. Same exact symptoms. Took it to an apple store and they said it was dead. Mine was out of warranty too. The only thing they did was give me 10% off a purchase when I recycled my old one.

I'd only had it a year and a half.

The whirr-clicky thing means that the hard drive is fucked and there is no way to repair it (for under the cost of a new one). It's worth 10% off your next iPod.

Yeah, kind of what I figured. Mine is about a year and a half also, got it 2 x-mas's ago. For those of you that bought a new ipod, are you happy you did? or are you still kind of pissed?

You guys seem to be okay with this.

If or perhaps when my Ipod breaks you'll see me on CNN getting arrested after i've shoven it back up Steve Jobs Ass!

Eh, it is electronics...shit happens, part of the game. Although I am a bit tired of my electronics breaking in the past couple of months, my ipod, my satellite radio, my watch, my computer and my stereo system have all gone on the fritz.

I judge all my electronics like i do my Grandmas TV. Sure the quality may degrade but the fucker is still going.

My PS2, Laptop,PSP and iPod better still be working 10 years from now or i'll still feel ripped off.

Here's a thought: Call the 1-800 Apple number and enquire about buying the 1-year service agreement for your iPod (even though it is out of warranty, they may agree anyway). I think it only costs about $50 - $75 as I recall. Then wait a day or two and take it to the Apple store or, better still, call the Apple service number --- for no charge, they will send you a "return ship box" to return the iPod to Apple. If they cannot fix it, they replace it at no extra charge. I put all my iPods on the plan right as they exit warranty --- the plans are cheap and one use of it for ANY reason makes it more than worthwhile (i.e. bad hard disk, battery no longer holding a charge, etc.).

$50 to replace your iPod is still way cheaper than a 10% credit towards a new one.

I think you have to buy this while it's still in it's first year of ownership. I plan on getting this plan this fall when my Nano turns about 1 year old.

True, do you think they'd actually go for that?

I had trouble with my PS2 a couple of years back. The Infamous DISC READ ERROR but i cracked it open cleaned it out and no problems since. My PSP and Vaio Notebook have been immaculate thus far.

One thing I found out after it was too late was that I bought my IPOD with my American Express. Apparantly AMEX doubles the warranty on items that you buy with it.

I ended up buying the Video ipod and I must say that I love it. However, i was still pissed for a couple of months after having to buy a new one. I'm over it now.

Wow, that is a nice deal for AMEX customers. Almost makes me want to go get a card just for a purchase such as this one.

Love that disc read error...it killed my first ps2 as well. My response wasn't nearly as calm and collected as yours was. I had just purchased a bunch of games for the system and it started having the error. I was SO angry and had a tough day at work or something...I threw it in the trash....and poured cooking oil on it.

To quote Otter in Animal House: "It has to work better than the truth!"...the worst thing that can happen is they say "no" to the service agreement because it is out of warranty...in which case, you are no worse off than you are now...

I've had my Creative Zen jukebox for almost three years. I've dropped it many times, had water splash it and have used it almost every day. Yeah, it's clunky and not as pretty as an iPod...but it works and I haven't had problem one with it. Maybe it's luck, but I like to think it's just a great product.

HaHa you're like the kid in school who owned a Sega Master System instead of an NES.:grope:

We shunned that kid like there was no tomorrow. He even had those Chinatown style Robots instead of real Transformers.

He's probably killed himself by now:D

I better put mine under warranty before it runs out too... although I have a few more months to go.

I've got the 60 gig vid... I loves it. watching movies and stuff at an airport without lugging around a huge portable or laptop alone is worth every penny.

Just as a sidenote, since I will be getting an ipod video, how do you put movies on it? or is there a website which explains all this?

I think there is a conversion program on apple, but I use dvd catalyst/pocket dvd at www.pocketdvd.ca -- you have a 5 day trial and it's a one-time fee after that. I love this program.

Well, luckily, I've always been that kid, haven't killed myself either because it's made me a more unique and confident individual and plus, I can listen to music without relying on unreliable fruit products.

I also had Coleco-Vision.

Actually a friend of mines just came back froma click/whiry. It was just a connection needed cleaning. Of course it was a semi-competant friend who fixed it so it coulda wnet horribly wrong.

Oh, those phones drive me nuts. I guess I am the one person on the planet earth who doesn't get all this cell phone coolness stuff. I mean, yeah it is alright, but I just want my cell phone to be able to work as a...phone...too much to ask? I don't need a video camera or a nail clipper included in my cell phone. But that might just be me.

Having an iPod for a while now, I could never rely on a cell phone for my music source. They have nowhere near the capacity. Narrowing down my music library to fit a cell would be like asking me to choose between Rocky Road and Mocha Almond Fudge. It can't be done.

Ok, just bought a 60gig Ipod video (after trading my old one in for 10% off the new one) anyone have any tips on places for good videos, or other good programs for putting dvd movies on my ipod? How much space does a typical flick take up?

well I already told you where to go to dl the program to convert DVD's to your iPod.

depends on at what quality you convert the movies into your iTunes, it can take up very little space.

Yep, nail clippers MIGHT be awesome, but knowing how much people use cell phones on the public transportation around here, I shudder to think about what I might witness...

I didn't want the 5G one, I bought thinking my 4G died. Then I attempted a repair myself, after the Apple guys looked it up and said it needed a new HD. Apparently my magic touch resurrected it.
