Pussey!
(Available June 2006)
A vicious satire of pop culture and the commerce of art returns! New edition, cover and intro by Clowes! This hilarious classic from Dan Clowes is a brutal and scathing peek into the insular, pathetic world of the comic book industry, as seen through the eyes of antihero Dan Pussey (pronounced "Pooh-say"), creator of the smash superhero comic “Nauseator.” From cradle to grave, Clowes presents the complete saga of Young Dan Pussey, mercilessly skewering the business and medium of comics, bouncing from art to commerce to culture high and low. Clowes not only parodies the superhero genre (notably Stan "The Man" Lee), but also his own peers, from his publishers and fellow authors at Fantagraphics to artistic heavyweights like Art Spiegelman (seen here as "Gummo Bubbleman"). Through it all, Pussey dreams endlessly about having sex with a woman, but even those fantasies degenerate into superhero scenarios. If you think Comic Book Guy on The Simpsons is pathetic (and hilarious), wait 'til you read Pussey!

64 pages, black-and-white, 7 1/4" x 11" paperback $9.95

i've read a lot of Daniel Clowes, but i've missed his earliest stuff like Lloyd Llewellyn and ... Dan Pussey.

at MoCCA, i picked up an eightball issue featuring the death of Dan Pussey, so even though the ending has been spoiled, i'm looking forward to reading his story.

here's an old review of the original collection, http://www.monkeysvsrobots.com/mvsrpm/comics_comments.php?id=16_0_3_0_C.

from what i've seen, outside of the Dan Pussey character, the story seems to be mocking the 90's superhero comic industry, with the part i read having a Liefeld archetype.

so, i'm going to call some shops, and see if they have any idea if this is coming out in the next couple weeks.

but, has anyone here read any Pussey before?

No, but my friend Jim always said they were his favorite Clowes stories. I've been looking forward to getting a copy for a few years now.

this is truly fantastic. i'm not finished yet, but you guys really should pick this up, it's only ten dollars!

anyhow, it satirizes so many things about comics... and so well.

mostly the '90's boom, with the new and exciting young artists being exploited.

comic conventions.

rob liefeld.

the entire comic industry (including the asshole aspect of the guys who screwed siegel and shuster, and th stan lee vs jack kirby). i hope some of you are more familiar with the history of comics will read this, because i'd like to know more about what he was referencing, like the horror comics.

and also, the comic makes fun of indy/alternative comics, and pretty nicely.

of course it's all over the top in a sense, but it's actually... a little more serious than i expected?

anyway, it's more Clowes goodness, and a lot more Clowes superhero drawing than i've seen at once, and well worth it.

it was great.

wow, that was great. lots of spot on observations. but i agree--the best art was definitely in the introduction and towards the end. i'm on the fence about the funky lettering he used to use. on one hand, it totally fits in with the art and creates this really cohesive page, but on the other, it's a little too jarring to read. but yeah, pussey! was fantastic. i don't know why it's taken so long, but i finally see clowes in that super upper echelon with ware, seth, tomine, etc.

speaking of which, sweet tomine YLT signature.

Agreed, I LOVE that two page introduction of Clowes' history with comics. Drawing himself as a kid (buying Power Man for god's sake) to being an amateur cartoonist at conventions was so cool.

To be honest, the idea of him reading those alternative comics (between Crumb and the Chris Ware I guess) are more depressing than crappy superhero comics.

and yeah, that font is so nicely done, but I'd have to look at it again. Overall, the art was so strange, I couldn't really make a judgment.

So you never really counted Clowes among the greats before, even with Death Ray and David Boring?

yeah, i don't know why i didn't consider him up there. i always was a fan, but i never thought of him in that top top group of cartoonists. but ghost world was always a favorite, and while death ray didn't grab me the way it did everyone else, ice haven was really solid and david boring was key in changing the way i looked at comics. i forgot this until i started writing this paper for my creative writing class, but david boring was the first non-superhero book i read. where was i? yeah, i have like a velvet glove... sitting here and it needs to be read. and mr. wonderful was amazing. yeah, clowes really deserves to be up there.

Ben Rosen
02-29-2008, 08:20 PM
but yeah, i'm really glad he's moved onto this cleaner style. i like the over-rendered, borderline grotesque characters every once in a while, but the new style's just so much better.

andrew french
02-29-2008, 08:22 PM
Agreed.

I actually find myself appreciating his older stuff less and less, moreso because of the art.

Velvet is a great mind trip (i read it when i had a really bad fever, so that'll forever be ingrained into my head).

Ghost World is still my perfect high school comic. That's what got me interested in alternative stuff.

David Boring was after, and for so long, it was my favorite comic. It was made better after reading Lolita.

Ice Haven is great, but I wish it was longer.

Death Ray is just so great to me... his idea to mash together comic strips telling the same story, which he started with in Ice Haven, was made perfect for me. The fact that he could make a superhero story my favorite comic story is insane. I just love everything about it: the friend relationship, the bully stuff, the aged Andy, the responsibility. Clowes on Spider-man is amazing.

Mr Wonderful was wonderful.

Do you remember his story, The Darlington Sundays, from McSweeney's 13? I fucking loved that story! There was a rumor that he'd make it a full comic, but I haven't heard anything since.

I just remembered he's doing a strip for the enormous Kramers issue. That's what I'm most excited for, next to Tomine.

i'd love to see what harkham brings to the new issue, too.

oh man, yeah. Nine Stories is a good one, I always forget about it.

20th Century Eightball has... some good stuff, but the only one I REALLY like anymore is the Li'l Enid strip he did especially for it. Again, it's more of his older stuff, and a little too creepy sometimes.

Nine Stories is a good bet, though.

And definitely re-read it, I really think it's something to be appreciated more and more. You and I seem to have similar expectations for comics, so I think you'd like it more, personally.

It's what made me want to be a cartoonist.

HATED! my god, man, re-read it. It's hilarious, and BEAUTIFULLY drawn. Full-color clowes... damn. better than ice-haven. He brings a kind of colored pencil striping on a girl's pajamas, and it's perfection.

and yeah, Harkham is the quiet emerging genius in many ways. I still need Crickets 2.

I just bought the new Metamorphosis and Other Stories edition, with the Harkham cover. It has comics on the back, and inside dusk inlets, all of which are just great.

I still draw a bit. I started a longer comic again, on slightly bigger paper (just bigger than 8 x 10, but on the same drawing pads i've used this past year).

I think my drawing-comics-in-a-notebook phase is over, though. It got me through I2I7, but I miss the comfort of single sheets of bristol board. i'm thinking of going kind of big with my next pages and then printing my next book 8.5x11. I think my next book is going to be a story about the origins of hip-hop. 20-30 pages. I've been researching it for a few weeks. I'm hoping it works out.

I understand where you're coming from, I have no idea how I drew in lined paper notebooks for a year and a half. I still like the notebooks, but... I dunno, I guess I don't draw enough lately for it to become an issue.

Origin of Hip-Hop? That's amazing.

I was supposed to do a 30 page fiction story for an anthology, but I kinda... didn't. Instead, I'm doing a kind of long-winded journal comic, since i haven't really done a memory/reflection thing in a while. mostly little joke strips and stuff.

Yeah, I haven't checked it too often, but I'm glad there's at least a few greats still posting. There were days I considered, "The Penrod Return," but ultimately, I think it'd be unsatisfying. I'd love to make some people happy buttttttttttttttt i'm still a wuss.

Thanks a lot, man, looking back, I actually did do a fair amount of little comics over winter break. I'll hook you up soon soon. With hourly day, I thought I'd try to compress it as well I could, instead of ugly big 2 panel compositions, I wanted one tiny page. The quote thing is blatantly lifted from ice haven (blush), or Brunetti, but I couldn't resist.

What comics are you digging lately?

As a heads up, Clowes had a strip in Zadie Smith's "The Book of Other People" A 4 or 5 full color strip (out of nowhere seemingly) about a movie critic. It was a good stuff (I cheated and read it in the store).

i'll tell you the truth man--i haven't been reading many comics. i'm taking this creative non-fiction writing class that's completely blown my mind. i'm seriously looking at an english major with an emphasis on creative writing. but anyway, i've been reading all the short stories assigned and then reading more by some of the authors. i've been working my way through a couple david foster wallace collections as well as a few hip hop books for this next comics project. i have this schultz biography here that's been staring me down for a while. i still get new comics pretty frequently, but pussey's the first older book i've hunted down in a while. i just don't have that urge anymore, you know? how about you?

and i'll have to cheat and read that clowes story too.

I understand, I'm taking a Create Non-Fiction class right now, too! I like it a lot, we've read stuff by Joan Didion (whose fiction I'd read, but her personal essays seem pretty good) as well as some good stuff by Robert Vivian.

I just haven't read many comics either, I'm bummed to hear the same from you. I'd like to think it's neither of our faults, but due instead to the lack of stuff from TopShelf,D&Q,FANTA. I'll check out the smaller guys sometime soon, but ..

An English major is a good way to go, I recommend it. I'm of the mind-set that you can teach yourself sufficient art (at least, I didn't want to make it my major anymore), but learning to read analytically and write somewhat well, as well as being exposed to some GREAT books (and crappy ones) is worth four years study.

But, I loved Acme Novelty 18, possibly more than 16 and 17. Otherwise, it's just books for me, sadly.

OOh, I loved Exit Wounds. That was what made me want to use color. It is some great stuff.

I hope you choose English (I don't even know what to say about econ haha).

I wanted to say earlier, the fiction stuff will probably come about in the near future, I just needed to clear my head for a bit with a break, then some casual stuff, and now, a sort of reaffirming comic to decide if I like making them again. THEN I'll focus.

and just do your thing man. if journal comics are whats flowing, do that. it's not like you have deadlines, or a publisher breathing down your neck--do whatever you want. but if you are looking for that reaffirming comic, it's called I2I7 and it's on it's way. all right, i need to get some sleep. it's been real, man. i'll shoot you some of my pages when i get down to business.

Great idea, that'd be a good comic to read for a couple hours with a coffee.

I know I shouldn't worry, but I always feel so guilty. It's just my own hangups, I'll loosen up in the summer, I hope (or get worse, but at least be productive). I can't wait to read I2I7. We should do a jam with White Cat and a new hero i cooked up, the spidey one was fun.

Fucking nice. I love the panel with the pot. I can't explain why but it's my favorite for some reason. Something about the texture and the steam really catches my eye.

ooohhh. Interesting choice of material. Put me down for a copy. BTW, I sent you a PM about I2I7.

Thanks a lot, man. I've made so many mashed potatoes this year, that pot is ingrained into my mind.

Rosen, I was thinking about a proposal.

A competition between you and I.

At least two comic panels every day (diary), like on lj, but just you and I. draw at least two every day, about that day, post, and whoever loses, has to do a comic praising the victor.

unless the "two every day" you were refering to was the at least two panels thing. in which case, i'm done and it's spectacular.

"is a virue"?

I don't think you realize how broke I am and how starved for creativity I also am. No shops around here carry good material and I can only find so much on the interwebs.
