BENDIS & LEE REVEAL MARVEL'S PLANS TO CELEBRATE STAN LEE'S 65TH ANNIVERSARY
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Marvel writer Brian Michael Bendis recently interviewed Marvel legend Stan Lee for a new column at Wizarduniverse.com. In the interview Bendis and Lee revealed that Marvel has big plans to celebrate Stan Lee's 65th Anniversary at the company this September.
Bendis started talking about the subject by saying they could finally talk about it, and Stan described his involvement in the Stan Lee/Marvel 65th Anniversary Project project as follows:
"...Marvel asked me to write some things. One is a set of five stories, 10 pages each. One story features The Thing, another featuring Dr. Doom and there are three others, I forget who they feature. I was going to do them in a different way than they had ever been done before — where I personally meet the characters in the stories. Incidentally, I try to make each one as humorous as possible.
"I am really quite excited about it because I must tell you, I really love the two that I’ve already written. In case you’re not aware of this, I’m probably my biggest fan. Oh, I just remembered. One of the stories features Dr. Strange. A funny thing about that is, I go to visit him in his place in Greenwich Village. When I get there, everything has changed because he’s now charging people to come in and they’re selling little gift items and so forth and it’s a whole commercial venture. I got a kick out of that."
Bendis then read the project rundown, which follows:
"STAN LEE PROJECT:
Five self-contained one-shots, beginning in September and coming out twice a month. Each book features a lead story written by Stan in which he interacts with one of the Marvel characters, a second story by modern day talents in some way paying homage to Stan’s body of work and accomplishments, and a third classic reprinted story written by Stan featuring the character from the first story.
SPIDER-MAN: Stan & Olivier Coipel/Joss Whedon & Michael Gaydos
DOCTOR STRANGE: Stan & Alan Davis/Brian Bendis & Mark Bagley/Bendis Fortune & Glory-style short
THE THING: Stan & Lee Weeks/Roy Thomas & Scott Kolins
DOCTOR DOOM: Stan & Salvador Larroca/Jeph Loeb
SILVER SURFER: Stan & Mike Wieringo/Paul Jenkins"
Stan replied, "Oh, Jesus. That’s wonderful. I’m really thrilled."
Bendis credited the project to Editor Tom Brevoort, saying, "It was Tom’s gift to you. He really wanted to do something nice, and tried to put together the biggest people he could find. So it’s very nice and I’m happy to be a part of it."
