View Full Version : New hope for the THING?...

Here's what Joe Quesada said this week in his JOE'S FRIDAYS column over at Newsarama:

”DBHughes” - Volume 1 of Dan Slott's Thing trade paperback is solicited in the July orders; those orders are not due until May 30 (a full two weeks from now). Why was the Thing announced as cancelled before Marvel even saw what the orders were for the first Thing trade paperback? Sales are allegedly the key factor in whether a title survives; Spider-Girl has in fact survived largely in part due to its trade paperback sales?

JQ: DB, our sales people have some pretty accurate ways of measuring how a title will do in the after market based on its current monthly sales and books of its kind historically. It’s black magic to me, but I’m always freaked out at how accurate they are. Sure, once in a blue moon a title over exceeds our expectations in the trade market, we love those kinds of surprises, so here’s the good news. If Thing does well as a trade, I’ll bet you dollars to donuts that we come back atcha with a new Thing series. It’s that simple.

Hey, what did I say? I'm not just making things up around here.

I know what to do for the Thing tpb, but we need other retailers behind it too. Hey Dan, how would you feel about calling the top few Diamond accounts plus a couple random comic shops to make sure they support the Thing tpb? We like it when we get phone calls. ;)

I'll make sure to tell people about this. It's actually easier to get people to buy a TPB than singles sometimes, so they might give this a shot.

Call me crazy but I just hope that Kieron Dwyer can stay on the book; #6 was my favourite issue yet, I feel it really brought the series off the ground.

Not to knock DiVito, just that lightheartedness isn't really his strongpoint and he's so much better with grand dramatic pieces, which the Thing by its nature doesn't really offer.

I think they ought to relaunch the book as Marvel Two-In-One with the book split between Thing stories and a serial about another character.

Yup, that's what I thought.

Here's hoping. :)

I dunno, that phrase usually means that the person is so sure of the outcome that they're willing to put money up against donuts, but I'm not convinced Joey Q doesn't value donuts over dollars. He may just be looking to satisfy his sweet tooth with that comment...

Still, I'm loving the Thing series, so I'm hoping I'm reading to much into Joe's tastes.

Well, I just hope that Marvel can get it out again. They shouldn't have yanked it in the first place, as doing so has caused a bit of a mess. Still, it means a lot more people can see it now, and I think a fair few of them are grabbing it while they can.

I hope the paperback numbers are huge, so they can get Slott's thing out again.

It was a fun book you could read ANYTIME, when you were stressed, happy, sad, whatever.

I say it should be relaunched as Two in One. maybe it would apeal to a broader audiance if people knew it was a team up book.

Any update on if the trade is going to have all eight issues? The solicit is odd in price, page count, and issues offered.

The Thing trade, "Thing: Idol Of Millions" is going to have all 8 issues.

Dan--

All you had to do was to make Thing a lesbian -- bingo all the publicity you could want.

I'm buying it for certain. Loved the last ish with Hercules, and the one with Lockjaw especially.

As you know or maybe not, I am a retailer. Can you PM me the # we're looking for on Things tpbs? I'm just curious how many Thing tpbs have to be ordered to get Marvel to look at the series again and what I need to be doing to make that happen.

Not only am I pulling every issue of Thing and She Hulk, I've loaned around the She Hulk TPB's, issues of Thing, and even the Arkham Asylum mini.

It's a shame that people would rather buy comics where people like Sue Dibney are victimized than comics that celebrate fandom and a shared universe.

Superhero comics that are 'grounded in reality' appear to be all the rage right now. Look at Civil War.

i second that idea for Marvel Two-in-One, not as a replacement but a seperate title the major question i have is if i get it off of amazon.com does it still count to support the title so marvel looks at it or should i order off of diamond directly

Shouldn't make any difference.

I plan on preordering a copy of the trade next time I go to the not so local comic book store. At this point would the trade sells help bring it back? I'm asking because I believe I've read something where you said you could only do two books on time monthly. With She Hulk and your upcoming series being two would adding the thing be too much of a work load?

One of my roommate's friends I met recently is really cynical about new comics, and loves stuff with an older feel, so I've been recommending that he buy the TPB when it comes out.
