Yeah. Aside from the fight scene in the hallway, I hated just about every minute of this movie.

I haven't seen it, I'm ashamed to say. I saw "Sympathy for Mr. Vengence," which rocked.

LOL,

i'm with Travis, Oldboy was good but i really thought it unbelievable and well... it really wasn't all that good even with the twists and turns.

i mean honestly, how the fuck can someone be locked away for how many bloody years?? by a gang of thugs? as if one of them wouldnt talk or get nabbed by the coppers and confess the whole thing in return for lighter punishment or something... basically the first premise i did not buy at all hence why i really didnt think the film was all that great.

Yeah, and also
It kind of seems like they have at least a few other guys held captive there. And our dipshit hero doesn't think of freeing them?

And it was a really awesome fight scene.

Yeah exactly, and as i thought it everyone else there were only captive for a few weeks or months at the most... so it means either they were freed (which should mean at least some mahfuckah telling their experience) ...or killed... ...but seriously the who organised crime able to pull something like that together and keep it together for that long seems absolute bullshit. I cant see common gangsters having that discipline

I was attempting to bring my logical reasoning down to your level while being as simple as possible. Obviously I got through.

i don't think the movie relied on realism.

I thought the first 15 or so minutes were some of the best filmmaking I've ever seen.

The movie as a whole I find to be hugely overrated.

I would give it a 6 out of ten.

They rely on the audience at least accepting a fim's premise... i didn't so the plot tanked big time for me. And i'm sorry, unless the film is something wildly fictional such as sci fi or whatever, they will always be criticisms about realism, or in the very least consistency.

Did I mention this is OLDBOY THREAD #72,543 on the Benbo?

It's still lagging behind Equilibrium, which is at a massive 127,972 threads!!!

Oldboy's a very entertaining movie, but mr. vengeance is a goddam masterpiece of modern cinema. I don't think I've been so thoroughly disturbed by a movie that seemed to be trying to LITTLE to disturb me.

the criticisms listed so far are pretty weak...

people didn't buy the movie because they find it unbelivable that someone would be locked away for so long or because the lesser thugs didn't cop to the police?

You can make those kinds of criticisms about any movie you want if you look hard enough...

Was there something else that you didn't like? the pacing? the dialogue?

I thought Oldboy was good, crazy fun.

Can't wait to see Lady Vengeance on the big screen in my town, next month.

Not that it matters, but consider it's not America where he's being imprisoned.

Their society may not work exactly like ours, so common thugs getting nabbed might not be so common, hence no confessions.

And then there's the whole Korean Yakuza, which would probably scare the same thugs more so than the police.

But yeah, the hype probably killed it for you unfortunately.

I saw this movie with only vague comments about something called Oldboy from the board in my mind. That helped.

I liked when he ate the live octopus.

Yeah. I think that was probably the case.

I can see why people would dig this movie. But it just wasn't my cup of tea:

- Too many plot gaps explained away by someone being hypnotized. The girl was at least 4 or 5 when her dad was taken and her mom killed. She doesn't remember that this happened? She doesn't remember her own father's name? The best friend doesn't keep track of her at all? The bad guy has magically erased her identity? It was a huge leap for me to accept the shock ending (and I called it early on - wouldn't it be odd if that chick was his daughter?) , and it just didn't work for me.
- The main character never clicked for me. Is he out for revenge? Or does he want a normal life again? He's so unbalanced that I can't get behind anything he does. He's hard as nails and then he folds like a newspaper.
- Regarding the chase scene flashback: Did those kids go to MC Escher high school?
- The bad guy's motivation was weak. When it was finally revealed, I was kind of like, "huh"?
- The final confrontation made no fucking sense to me. Our "hero" debases and mutilates himself to prevent the bad guy from revealing his secret. Then he tries to kill the bad guy anyway. When the old remote control trick doesn't work, he just falls to pieces? What about getting up and ripping the guy'slimbs off like you've been planning all along? What the fuck?
- Why the fuck does the hypnotist have an office in the snow?

Parts of the movie were awesome. The scene with him eating the octopus ruled. And like I said, the fight scene in the hallway was goddamned amazing. But it was nowhere near as good as I was hoping for.

I watched this last night and I'm not sure...

I really liked parts of this movie, but as a whole it doesn't hold up. The whole motivation behind the villian of the movie seemed kinda silly and weak.

When he's explaining his motivation to his revenge at the end:
"Do you wanna know why?" "Wait, it gets better!" I was half-expecting the fucker to just burst out with villainous laughter! "hahahahahaha"

Who would win a fight? Steamboy or Oldboy? Seems like Steamboy would win - steam takes wrinkles out of things, and old people are wrinkly.

I just watched it last night. I liked it quite a bit. It wasn't the revenge movie I was expecting based from my impression of the first fifteen minutes in.
