There's no newsletter to sign up for. You get a strange message from "Persephone" and after asking for a password, it tells you to call the number in the tv advertisement.
Which I guess we'll see tomorrow during Lost.

I remember when I was a kid and my friends and I would ride our bikes all over the neighborhood every afternoon. There was a cornfield near my house. The kids in the neighborhood would always dig tunnels through the corn, knocking down stalks to create hallways and rooms, creating a strange sort of corn-based club house. The real trick to it was, you had to be careful getting into the field, so as to not disturb the outter wall of corn. If the guys who owned the field saw the outer wall was screwed, they'd call the cops and we'd all have to race off on our bikes for fear of getting arrested for trespassing.

Anyone think we might have a new map here?
Global Welfare Consortium 19 September, 2005
Rue Grande 1623

Switzerland
To: Dr. Roderick Johnson, M.D., Ph.D., Clinical Director, Centers for Diesease Control
From: GWC Executive Committee
RE: Violation of Ethical Guidelines / The Hanso Life-Exention Project
CC: Mr. Peter Thompson Vice President, General Counsel, The Hanso FOundation; Hugh McIntyre, Vice President and Communications Director, The Hanso Foundation
Dr. Johnson:
We have recieved word of an unfortunate and most alarming
issue in the past days concerning research operations by The Hanso Foundation in the sub-Saharan region of Africa.Sadly, we have exhausted our mandate as a watchdog organization and must petition you for a formal investigation.
It has come to our attention that a new strain of meningococcal disease has been reported in the costal villages of the United Republic of Tanzania. This strain is particularly alarming in that it has successfully breached the simian/homo sapiens barrier.
As the enclosed documentation and correspondence demonstrate, we have repeatedly asked the Executive Board of The Hanso Foundation for assistance in determining the possible correlation between the outbreak of this transgenic disease and the research being conducted on primates in their Experimental Station in Zanzibar. As our requests have been met with utter and complete disregard, we feel we have no other choice than to demand your immeditate intervention.
As The Hanso Foundation is using primates to research gene therapies intended for human use, the correlation should be obvious.
Considering the alarming nature of thie outbreak and the mounting death toll it is imperative that The Hanso Foundation immediately open the doors of their Experimental Station for inspection and, should a link be found between their work and this disease, desist their activities immediately.
Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter. Lives are at stake.
Monsieur Jacque Maillot
Director General, GWC Executive Committee

Letter 2
Global Welfare Consortium 25 September, 2005
Rue Grande 1623
1221 Geneva 27
Switzerland
To: Dr. Roderick Johnson, M.D., Ph.D., Clinical Director, Centers for Diesease Control
From: GWC Executive Committee
RE: The Hanso Life-Exention Project
Dr. Johnson:
Please consider this a formal apology for the heated and alarmist tone of our previous correspondence as well as a formal request for the withdrawl of former Director General Jacque Maillot's request for an intervention into the affairs of The Hanso Foundation.
In the time since Monsieur Maillot's letter, GWC's inspection team has been welcomed with open arms into The Hanso Foundation's Experimental Station in Zanzibar. Our thorough examination of the Station has made it clear that the benign, non-invasive research being conducted there could not have possibly resulted in the outbreak of a transgenic virus.
Because we appriciate the CDC's willingness to intervene when lives are at stake, the last thing we want is to abuse our close relationship with your organization -- or sound alarms before the need is absolutely clear. Once again, please accept our apologies, and our appriciation of your diligent responce to our correspondence.
Mr. Peter Thompson, Acting Director General
Global Health Consortium
NOTE: If you scroll to the top and down again (or something like that) the signature is circled in red. Clicking on it results in a female voice saying "The Hanso Foundation. setting world speed records for subverting authority." as it is typed up on the screen in red text. Clicking that takes you back to Joop's Corner.

As said earlier, after that, go talk to Joop. Say anything. You'll be taken to a weird screen with microbes. Connect the highlighted microbes by clicking on both. You'll be taken to a letter. Click on the signature and you'll be taken to another letter. Click on the highlighted name and a woman (Persephone?) will talk. You'll then end up back on the Hanso site.
On top of that, go to "Active Projects" and check out the WWPDP tab. On the top, go to "World Map". Instead of clicking on one of the dots, click roughly where the Bermuda Triangle is. The map will relocate to that area and as you pass your mouse over it, strange, unreadable text pops up.

Author Gary Troup delivered the manuscript for his hotly anticipated thriller, Bad Twin, just days before he boarded doomed Oceanic Flight 815. Watch the recently uncovered video clip of Gary Troup on Book Talk interviewed by Laird Granger talking about the controversy surrounding his mysteriously out-of-print first book, The Valenzetti Equation, and his new novel, Bad Twin.

Can anyone think of other book stores? Those videoclips all continue one into the other and there must be more. Found a link to the Border's one (http://e.bordersstores.com/a/hBEWXsZAQfEXsAedwLlAX2IBt.AVvW22RU/troupwmv) but I can't think of any other stores that might have more clips. There has to be a connection with this Valenzetti Equation that the "author" wrote about that is connected somehow to Hanso.

Monster.com is mentioned on the recordings. Sounds like just product placement...
Go to http://www.monster.com, go to the employer's section, try out their resume finder by typing "hanso", and check out the second of the three resumes returned.

There's a mention to "Valenzetti related research activity" (it's just immediately to the left of the I AM HERE writing), which is what Troup's other book was about: "The Valenzetti Equation", which is supposed to be a mathematical equation that predicts the Apocalypse.
I wonder if there's anything else on that map that might be useful in the game. Like Magnus Hanso, for example.

Shouldn't we relax a bit about this? Isn't this supposed to last until next season? They can't give it all away now; the season hasn't even finished yet.
Complaining about too little or too simple seems a bit premature when the game has barely begun. It'd be like complaining about the opening of the first season by thinking "oh, great! Do we really need another Survivor?"
Give the game some time.

Well, usually the way these things go, when a clue like this is given out it actually leads to something. That's really the only complaint is that this clue seemingly leads to nothing or possibly something already found.
I don't want everything in one go. But, there's little fun if you try and figure out a clue and work hard to decipher it only to receive no reward for that work.

I'm not sure I understand the analogy, but anyway, we're just shooting the shit. I wasn't complaining about the game being too simple, I was just expressing my opinion that I would not play the game if the puppetmasters behind the game really thought the couple thousand people playing needed their hand held through the puzzles.

True.
Look, I'm not saying that you can log on in the past. I'm not saying that May 1 makes sense.
All I'm saying is that May 6 isn't the answer just because it looks like a good answer. You can't change the numbers to whatever you wan't to make them "fit". A rotation code is very simple...you just take the number of the code and add that to every letter. So if you had A and rot18, you'd go up by 18 letters and get S.
Now numbers usually aren't meant to be changed by a rotational code because it's a modular code. But let's say they are. Then logically you'd take a number and add 18 to it. If you had 1, you'd add 18 and get 19.
I'm sorry. As a math teacher, it gets me worked up. :)

Ah, but that's the thing, rot-13 didn't come up with a 1. If you go to http://www.rot13.com and put in a number, it just returns that number. So because 1 was in the original code, the 1 stayed the same when everything else was rotated.
So when someone came up with rot-18, they said "Oh, we need to change the 1 accordingly" and added 5. But the problem is, it was 1 at the beginning, not after rotating.
That has to be what happened. Man, it feels better knowing how the error was made.

I see what you mean. Dunno, then. From reading up on it, you can only get a number 0-9 using rot18 so I'm not sure what's going on. All I know is I've seen it corrected in several places that they used a rot18 cypher and came out with 6.

Seems likely. There's also the missing organs thing which is probably connected to him as well. As to whether it is just interesting info or actual useful clues, I don't know. Tried using all of them as passwords with his name to log in and nothing came up.

thelostexperience.com is now reporting the correct number to be 8, not 1 or 6.
How, you may ask? Well, they figure the number is on a simple substitution (0 is 9, 1 is 8, 2 is 7).
Of course, they're basing this substitution on ONE CHARACTER. It's like me sending you the message X and telling you that it was encrypted.
Either way, seems like there's a new message at persephone.thehansofoundation.org that says that the answer is 8, which is fine. If they tell us it's 8, I'll believe it. There's no need to go back and assume that we completely messed up decoding.

Yeah, something's wrong when you have to post an emergency puzzle to get everyone the right answer. Kind of lame and even worse the original puzzle was just saying there will be new stuff 3 days later, umm okay, great. That was fun. :mistrust:

I can tell you that there is no Copenhagen, Berlin, New York, Madrid, Barcelona, or Oslo directory. After that, I got bored.

i tried some of those. the more i thought about it how they're playing this I don't think they'd fake the directory index page.

The word miracle is a non-working link on the WWHDP press release. Plus there's obviously Thompson's miraculous recovery.
Thompson's miraculous recovery?
Have their been any additional updates since "Heir Apparent?"
What are we to make of the globe-trotting Alvar Hanso? Didn't the time of those travels not appear to be linear?

Thompson had inoperable lung and pancreatic cancer. He went to a Hanso facility in Geneva and was miraculously cured. Then he was hired by THF.
The only update's been the stuff about the book posted above, nothing else since.

I am having some trouble grasping the concept of the show and game. In the Lost-verse, the Hanso Foundation is a huge philanthropic, supermodern, and futuristic company, correct? Even in the present day, If I understand correctly. So, Jack, as a doctor, would certainly be familiar with the company, and, really, most everyone else should be, as well. I'd be hard-pressed to believe a savvy guy like John Locke would be unaware of something like the Hanso Foundation. Heck, even Mr. Eko should've heard of the Foundation, as it apparently helps out big time in Africa--or purports to. But, in the show, there is no recognition of the company portrayed. This strikes me as highly unlikely....

Yeah, something about this thing has been bugging me, and I think you hit the nail on the head.

Yeah, to be honest I don't think the game information is to be trusted at all. I really don't think it's meant to be much more than a fun diversion that plays with things from Lost.

Well, Brian, I can see why you'd say that, but I thought they originally announced it as something that would reveal some mysteries from the show. So the whole thing is kind of a wash....

I never saw the actual announcement, so I'm not sure. I can't imagine it would reveal anything, though, since not everyone's gonna play it or for that matter even know it's going on. They'd then have a problem conveying whatever was revealed in the game to those people who only watch the show.

Exactly...which brings us back to my original point, I guess. The whole idea of a Lost ARG which fits unsteadily into the universe of the show and won't reveal anything worthwhile (well, hopefully won't) is a pretty flawed one, I'd say. Ugh, also--the game implies that by 2006, the Lostaways haven't taken down the clearly malicious Hanso Foundation. Well, why the fuck not? That strikes me as highly unlikely that the show will end with the villains at large, or, barring that, that the Lostaways will be stuck on the island until 2006, or even 2005....

Well - the company's headquarted in Copenhagen, right? It's not impossible that it's a big deal in Europe and not so much over here. I might can see Jack knowing about it, but I can also see every one else never hearing of it.

Really? From the website, it seems like it's pretty well known. Again, at the very least, Jack and Eko should have heard of it, and by your logic, Charlie. Just because it's headquartered in Copenhagen doesn't mean it's not incredibly well known--which is certainly the impression the site gives off. As well, it seems like there are Hanso centers all around the world, once again according to the site.

Ha, didn't even consider that. Ah,well.
On a side note, JJ was on Kimmel last night and said that he and Damon worked on the season finale for a long time and that it's gonna totally blow everyone's minds. :D
