I'm curious to see everyone's interpretations from the characters of Kabuki!

My first kabuki fanart is the image I'm using now :) I'll post here when I make more :D

Most of my Kabuki fanart is here:http://www.comicstalkers.com/kabukifanart

Including the Mack-tion figure, and the figures and masks I made YEARS before the real ones.

And my kabuki microheroes...

A cover i did for a mini comic that collected a Kabuki story i wrote and drew (and sent to DM) plus the Kabuki Jam that happened on the other Mack message board. (Notice David hugging/protecting Kabuki after the death of Scarab).

hi rob
thanks.i liked your image also, the one with kabuki crying.really nice that you added the author in the image, that made it seem real sweet and warm. good thinking and it must be well hard drawing that kanji on a face at that angle..nice one.

i used the drawing as a template as i felt my model yun-fei does not look like kabuki.(nor does my sketch lol,).i also made sure she was a little wider and bigger but i was happy with the pictures compersition.(the way the flag lead down to the oragami)..i added the hand ( as i wanted it to be undistracting and subtle so th eye looks at the paper only) and nose and eyes from the pic to paint over them to give the certain expression i wanted. i like working from photo ref at the mo as i felt it was necersary to give it a more realistic feel, a feel of ..well it was inspired ather reading alchemy were kabuki travels around the world with akemi on her mind..i sometimes its important also to not do great detail...but in this case i felt it was right..

the background people were also put in and painted over,as i wanted them to look like they were running so i adjusted them abit(maybe their tracking our kabuki),,,and i think the flag was pasted and painted..i did not like the buildings in the original either so i chose not to paint some off them...some of my recent work with coral painter is on my website,i print them on canvas and work into them more, its really fun,,,,i started doing this cos i missed using both hands,,

hope that sums it up robbo :)

How shall we do this. Shall we say a couple of days to come up with a kabuki related sketch and then we scan and pass it on to the other to person.

Say i'll pass to Thommy, Thommy passes to Jac, and Jac passes to me.

Sketch only first and then on the second rotation colouring the image so it's a triple treat (i.e. part of all of us :)).

The only thing is, i know i'm going to be a little slow due to my current workload (but very keen so i'll find the time), so we could say a week for each process.

What do you think?

Hi Thommy,

Phew! Managed to scan this in.

Basic idea behind the piece started off with Kabuki beign a pawn of the Noh and then escaping with the doctors hand & bag and then gaining her new face and some semblance of freedom.

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g123/HotRob75/KJamThommy2d.jpg

Let me know if the image is not good enough i have also scanned it as a better JPG image which vary from 1MB to 6MB in size. PM me if you want me to email mail them through to somewhere.

Can't wait to see the painted piece. (Was also thinking you can add anything you like to it, maybe a chessboard disappearing into the background and merging up to some astral scene....) Go WILD dude!

Cheers,
Rob.

Hey Guys,

Sorry i haven't been around for a while, got a three week holiday coming up and it takes a bit of planning.

Anyhoo Here's a link to a starter for you. The file is 935 KB so i thought it best not to post it directly here.

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g123/HotRob75/SnapDragonLRGE.jpg

Last night i drew Snapdragon for Claire, who is an awesome french girl i met briefly at the airport in New Zealand. Claire drew me a wicked pic of my favourite Noh agent Scarab, and i know her favourite is Snapdragon so here you have it.

Who's up next? Take it away!

If you want you can print it out, add something to it, scan and repost for someone else to add to it. The idea being that it's a bit of a Kabuki Jam piece. :)

Cool drawing, HotRob! Could you possibly crop it a bit and resize it? Its a bit distracting with all the surrounding whiteness.

Good stuff though. I was working on a Scarab/Tigerlilly piece, but it didn't end up turning out the way I wanted it to. Ah well.

Thanks DD666!

The surrounding whiteness is for others to join in on a bit of a jam piece.

David Thornton on the DavidMackGuide.com website kindly cropped it so it's easier to see.

Thanks everyone, :D

I painted in it Photoshop 6 with a optical wireless mouse... I'm a PC person (Cann't afford a Mac)

Method is from a photographic reference. I use the photo in a layer to block-in the color then comes several layers in low opacities of colors to add in shadows and highlights. I like that I can zoom in real tight on the photo to see details that I often miss looking at the image in its normal size. I try to give it a realistic look, the minute details and little subtle shadows are hard for me to see without a zoomed veiw.

This was only about 3 hrs of work.. still pretty rough. I need to spend another 1-2 hrs atleast to do some fine tuning of the details and textures.

I have a whole portfolio of work at Artwanted.com

A Very Cool Kabuki contest would be for a Guest Artist Cover by a fan.
Maybe have folks submit original Kabuki Art and Mack himself choose one for one of his books. Some of his Non-pro fans can really do some neat stuff. :D
Doing a cover for an established Artist or book would be better than being paid!

Thats a cool idea as he does do alternative covers, but a cover says alot in comics, maybe a space in a reflections page is more realistic.
i really love the alkemi covers so far,,my fav alternative is the maleev one,,the klimt esc one, i will look for a nice big print of that. i maneged to get a signed alkemi 1 from ebay lol, hope mack nips upto uk sometime

I did these Origami pieces a little while ago, just haven't had the chance to scan them before, though the scan ain't brilliant.

The first is Akemi (I lost her hat with the Akemi face on it :()and the second Kabuki with a Samuri Warrior hat. :)

Hi everybody. I'm kind of new around these parts, but I've been a huge Mack fan since Circle of Blood came out. Anyway I just saw this thread, and thought I would share some of my art too. The first one is one of a few kubuki pictures I drew for fun a few years ago. It was a quick one and I changed her costume some. The other is a samurai, that I did last week (you can see the difference a few years can make!) I've also got a Kabuki painting laying around somewhere that I never scanned in. [QUOTE=eazy]Hi everybody. If I can find it tonight I'll try and post it later too.

Thanks for looking.

MC Square is rockin thommy!

Bring the hat into being more and i like the way the writing is all over her shirt and then the final origami product is coming out of her hands.

Maybe need some sort of focus light wether it be on her or on the origami creation just to bring the attention to the right place. At the moment for me i'm unsure where the focus is. (however it may also be the late, late night and my general weirdness today).

Have a great weekend, we'll see you on the flip side!

Eek! Sorry Thommy! :(
I do like it alot though!!

I was playing with Ben caldwell's Action Cartooning book on the weekend (trying to get more movement in my pictures) and came up with this sketch.

http://www.neuralwerx.com/robin/wp-content/uploads/2006/11/KabCald1.jpg

It's Kabuki vs her 'Daughter' from the Kabuki Jam.

Hopefully i should be able to incorporate it into the next Kabuki Jam piece i do.
Some much to draw, so little time!

Good work Baird!! I like the poses you use so the characters don't feel static.

Hey Thommy, "just add some angry rain...and some poetry by mack to this image" she may need to be more huddled if that was the idea. Just my two cents :)

I've got some new stuff up on my art blog and am itching to get some more Kabuki done after a few more personal jobs are out of the way.

Hope you guys are having a good week.

Something people always forget is that the inks are what gets printed. The pencils have gotta be good, sure, but they're not the end product.
If you're good with a brush, that's something that dozens of guys with mechanical pencils can't say.

I dig ICE too, and the design seems to work really well for other artists to do thier version of her. There is always an interesting surprise in the interpretation.
In this.
And in Oeming's version of her in Vol3 and Dave Johnson's story of her, etc.

I'm really looking forward to the Clay Moore sculpted interpretation of the character.

It looks like Butoh was voted to be the next sculpted bust. But Ice after that.

01-15-2007, 03:33 PM
what does butoh mean anyway?

MACK!
01-15-2007, 05:26 PM
It is a kind of advant garde dance.

The root BU character is the same BU in Kabuki that is the symbol for dance.

And butoh itself has come to be a specific kind of modern performance artist type dance.

Can you access www.davidmackguide.com from work?
IF you search for interior pages from Metamorphosis, I'm sure you could find some pretty good ones.

Hey Thommy,
Looking forward to seeing it evolve! Is this all digital work?

I'm gonna go order the DVD from my comic shop (from the October Previews OCT064855 The Alchemy of Art: David Mack page 520) and if that doesn't work just straight from the heromovieprouctions.com website.

Maybe you could borrow someones credit card and order online?
Rob.

ok the computers were down at work so i had no images of what she looked like for reference. I used a SG for the anatomy (and changed several things to avoid a law suit).
so yea sorry if i screwed up, but honestly i am proud of this sketch. But feel free to tear me a new one anyway! (btw only #6 and #2 pencils used, so sorry if it is kind of light)

i was going for her right arm to be a lil bit away from her body like it was floating up. I suck with perspective...so the rest of the compliments rock!

Do i remember you?
your in my mind whenever i turn around
i sense you
i loose sense of myself
i reach for you but you cant hold me with those hands of yours.
you are my darkness
only when this is over will this all be fair
days drift by
me a slave to the sun
you to the moon
your silence is reckless
you haunt me and i welcome it
your my motivation, a purple dream.
chase me. catch me,
i have taken you to this empty place to bring you out.
since i lost you my mind has never been silent
chase me , catch me, take me
your silence is reckless

Hi I'm new to the forum, introduced by Thommy, I'm a Comic creator. I've worked for Vertigo and Dark Horse on titles including The Dreaming, Hellblazer and The Minotaurs Tale, Probably best known in the UK for my Autobiographical graphic novel The Spiral Cage. Here is a recent Kabuki painting inspired by having just read Metamorphosis.

I've added a detail of the painting posted previously, I started by photographing a model, then I produced a pencil drawing, this was then scanned and printed out in blue line on to art paper, I applied an overall wash, then worked up the figure with karisma color pencils, copic markers and acrylic washes, the background was darkened with acrylic, and then lighter shades and whites spirals added, te highlights on the figure were applied last with copic opaque white, and tinted with copic markers.
