awesome pic, but their legs create a tangent that is kind of distracting. you can see where he originally sketched it so that black adam's leg extended behind doom (between his legs) and that would fix the tangent.

in your professional opinion, do you feel that it's okay to 'break the rules' by letting a tangent (or anything else) go if it helps to establish a better pose?

please don't misread that as disrespectful, i'm asking for educational purposes. like in other words, do you feel that certain 'rules' of composition trump others in certain cases? like where a tangent is allowed because the pose producing the tangent tells a better story in the picture.

I look at the "rules" as suggestions. The only truly interesting thing about art in general, to me anyway, is ambiguity. Every piece, every page has to have something unsettling, wonky or unexpected in it or you wind up with sterile stuff like Soviet poster art or photorealist watercolor landscapes. The rules are your tools. How you use them, or even break them, is what makes you an artist.

Here's an example from what I'm doing as we speak. Generally, when you have characters move across a comic book page/panel they should be moving left to right to take advantage of the reader's eye movement. So, on this Ant-Man page I'm drawing I'm abiding by that rule- UNTIL the last two panels. Then I flip Ant-Man's movement (breaking the 180 rule, BTW), because he's registering surprise by having his antennae limp in one panel, then straightened in alarm the next- The antennae are usurping the L>R flow rather than the figure, drawing attention to that element. Phew. Am I overthinking this stuff?

The first 6 issues of Nightwing that Devin, Ande, Cliff and I did have been released. It's called Mobbed Up (that title being one of the few ideas of mine they used!)

20 years ago I was in college, but just starting to get work. I pray hard that stuff never gets collected. Oversight is most every short from 1990- 2005.

I doubt Swamp Thing ever gets collected. I can't tell you why. Something hinky, I believe. We sold three times what that book sells now and the current issues get traded up. It's not like Mark isn't popular.
