View Full Version : Thing #5
Which was already on my pull list, of course.
Lots of fun again this issue. The Masseuse gag was my favorite part. Even if people don't really care for the Thing as a character, I don't know why they wouldn't buy this book for DiVito's art alone. It's the best the Thing has looked in forever.
Nice to see the 2 villains of the piece again. The last time we got to see PPP was in that arc of Waid's FF that almost made me drop the book. So I'm ready for a new round.

This series just gets better and better in my opinion. I really can't understand how a book this fun could be failing.
Definitely one of my favourite series at the moment.

Acording to Joe's Fridays this is going to be the last issue with DiVito.
Apparently he is moving on to Annihilation though so that is good for him.
The next artist will be Kieron Dwyer. I am possibly going to throw myself open to ridicule and say I don't know who Kieron Dwyer is, can anyone help me here?
Also, a question for Dan, Joe seemed to imply that DiVito is gone for good, is that true?

I heard that too, and I am less than happy :(
Kieron Dwyer was on a far few issues of Avengers Volume 3, around the late 40s to shortly after Geoff Johns took over (can't remember when that was).
He's not too bad, but not exactly a favourite of mine. For me, he's going to have an almost impossible task of following DiVito :(

I'm not the biggest fan of Brevoort as an editor. He moves around artists far too much. This sucks that Di Vito is getting moved permanently. Just in time for this big pull list push.
Ain't nothing like showing perspective buyers some instability as a pitch to try to get their money, huh?
Anyway, I am a fan of Kieron Dwyer, and am glad to see him doing more work for Marvel. He wasn't the perfect choice for Avengers. (he wrapped up Kurt Busiek's run and then did some of Geoff Johns' issues, Dingo.)
He got his start on Captain America back in the 80's when he was 17. I believe he was John Byrne's step son at the time, if memory serves me right.
I'll still collect the Thing, but I sure hope this isn't going to be yet another case of a book that can't hold an artist. Let Dwyer stay for a good few years.

Andrea was really psyched about the Hercules issue, ESPECIALLY jazzed about the poker issue, and heartbroken about leaving THE THING. But the office REALLY needed someone to hop on board and draw ANNIHILATION.
Andrea has made it known, that if we can keep THE THING going, it's his desire to come back to the book. THE THING is one of his favorite characters and he was having a ball working on the book. And he was actually the first one to suggest taking drastic measures-- to do ANYTHING-- to bolster the book's numbers. When we started kicking around the idea of a contest-- he was the one who said we should offer his original art as a prize! What a guy!
Meanwhile, as you can tell, though I'm bummed we're losing Andrea to the lucky ANNIHILATION team, I'm SUPER-PUMPED to be working with Kieron!
Kieron Dwyer is one of the best pencilers in the industry! He's worked on part of Kurt Busiek's run of AVENGERS, and has also produced stellar work on CAPTAIN AMERICA, DAREDEVIL, UNCANNY X-MEN, X-FACTOR, ACTION COMICS, LOBO, and BATMAN (to name a few!).
Kieron's also drawn on one of my favorite BATMAN stories of the past 20 years: DETECTIVE COMICS ANNUAL #8 (if you've never read it, do yourself a favor and hunt it down! One of the best Batman/Riddler stories EVER told!). Here's the cover:

Come Monday, if it's okay with the office (and I can figure out how to put artwork up on the net), I'll see if we can show off a page or two Kieron's THING pages! I can't wait for people to see the AMAZING work he's doing on THE THING-- and how great Laura's colors look over his work!!!

Ouch, that is going to be a tough act to follow. I have only heard one person online say that they didn't like DiVito's work, they wanted it to be less cartoony and more grim and gritty.
I swear some people would ask for more grim and gritty art in Millie the Model for goodness sake.

They want him to be more grim and gritty? :mistrust:
Obviously never saw his work on Thor: Ragnarok then :nonono2:
I'll give Kieron the benefit of the doubt of course, it's not like I can't stand his work. I liked his Avengers okay enough, I just would much prefer DiVito to stay.

But make no mistake about it, Andrea's made it VERY clear that if we can keep THE THING going-- the second he's finished with ANNIHILATION-- if it's at all possible, it's his desire to come back to THE THING.
Annihilation is seven issues right?
I think we can keep the light on that long :)

Along with some Paul Smith She-Hulk art! :D
I like Dwyer about the same as Di Vito, but I do think this announcement is bad timing on Marvel's part. Dwyer should have been announced before people were led to believe that they were putting a book drawn by Andrea Di Vito on their pull list. What about the people who may have only pulled it because of him, or the people who pulled it, but don't like Dwyer's art at all.
It's not your fault, Dan, so don't sweat it.
Is Di Vito going to be continuing with covers, or will Kieron be taking over full ownership of the art on the book? As much as I love Di Vito's covers, I prefer when the covers and interiors match.

I just read issue 5 again and I spotted a nice touch that I thought I would share. At the end of Ben's phone conversation with Alicia he only just managed to stop himself from saying "bye babe". It kind of reminded me of the awkwardness he had talking to her after secret war when a skrull he thought was her was marrying Johnny. Then that reminded me of how awkward he was when she came back and acted like they were still in a relationship. Man they have had a rocky relationship, but it is kind of sweet that he has to conciously stop himself from calling her babe. Nice touch Mr Slott

Mensch literally means "man," but is colloquially used to mean "a really good person." When someone has a good heart and does the right thing, he's being a mensch.
A gantser k'nacker is a big shot.

Ok, Dan, time to anti up already. I want to get pumped up for this. (and Paul Smith's She-Hulk, which I'm dying to see!)
Marvel is definitely giving you some good artists that are solid. Truth be told, I may even like Dwyer better than Di Vito. Dwyer is an excellent choice to have drawing a book like the Thing. I think his artwork on it should be used as a selling point in this sales drive push that's going on. His Thing art should get exclusive Newsarama coverage! A promotional piece should be done for this by Kieron, featuring his Thing, supporting characters, upcoming villians, and upcoming guest stars. Something to really get everyone excited. Things like this need to be done to sell books. Anytime it's an X-Men book or big deal to Marvel, they commision something from the artist. Paul Smith should get similiar treatment and have to do a promotional piece for She-Hulk.
I would also prefer that he remain and Andrea just move on. Dwyer is very capable of taking this book and making it his own, with a visual identity for the series that kicks complete ass. He was always pretty fast, too. Di Vito will have no problem finding a lot of work. Anybody interested in seeing Dwyer's past work, just check it out here.

I think he'll be a perfect artist for the character. (especially if he brings this style!)

Finally got out to my comic shop and bought issue #5. It's the same old predictable good time every time I read an issue.
Ben back at Yancy street is always good reading, and the combined forces of the Sandman and Paste Pot Pete (AKA The Trapster) won't be enough to take the big guy down. Ben's not above kicking somebody in the balls if it'll put him down.
Andrea's art was as good as ever. He'll be very missed, but I'm really looking forward to Dwyer. I just don't understand why this isn't being announced from the tree tops. Some promotion should be down about the upcoming new artist.
There wasn't even a mention of it in the letters page of issue #5. What's up with that? It needs heavy promotion. This should be treated like it's the biggest deal in the world by the editor, not something that is sprung on anybody not online.
Anyway, congrats on another great issue!

Keiron Dwyer drew one of my favourite ever comics - it was the during his Captain America run, an Act of Vengeance issue featuring Magento vs the Red Skull. Amazing stuff.
