The Attorney General was cracking down on porn sites that might violate obscenity laws. The Suicide Girls decided to shut down preemptively, because they never knew when the feds would come for them.

This is the description of events on Wikkipedia...
In September 2005, SuicideGirls became the subject of two controversies, both of which received coverage in the media [9] and the blogosphere [10] [11].

First, a number of the paid models were reported to have resigned from the site, or had their membership revoked, over a number of issues, which appear to be centered around allegations of censorship of the journals and message boards, mistreatment of the models by the SuicideGirls owner, and attempts to prevent SuicideGirls models (including former models) from working for other sites or agencies. Numerous members have reported that their journals and message board messages were removed because they criticized SuicideGirls management. In the case of the models, at least one case has resulted in a litigation threat [12]. Additionally, critics charged that SuicideGirls had misled potential models and members into believing it was a women-owned and women-operated business, and about the political and social views of the owner. [13]

Also in September 2005, SuicideGirls announced [14] that it had removed a large number of images from its pages, in an attempt to avoid scrutiny in the U.S. Justice Department's so-called "war on porn". The images involved depicted bondage and sadomasochism and real or simulated blood or weapons. Communications from the Justice Department indicated that images of that type might be the subject of obscenity prosecutions, though SuicideGirls was not mentioned as a target.

Later, SuicideGirls co-owner Steve Simitzis wrote [15] that the removal of images was due to the company's cooperation with the Federal Bureau of Investigation in a computer crime case in which the defendant was accused of computer intrusion. Simitzis said that the FBI requested a "a list of every single photo set that contains bondage, blood play, urination, etc." on the grounds that the defendant could use these images against SuicideGirls (who was acting as a witness in the case), so the FBI wanted to be prepared for any attacks on the credibility of their witness. While compiling this list, the new FBI "War on Porn" came to the site administrators' attention, and they realized that handing over a complete directory of their most "obscene" images may provide the FBI with all of the information they needed to prosecute the owners of the site.

I'm confused. I thought Suicide Girls' site is still up.

I've been asked to pose for a Canadian one of similar vein. I have mulled it over but I think what it boils down to is my bf doesn't want me to do stuff like that.

My girlfriend was telling me about an article in Bust magazine about the Suicide Girls. As previously stated, there are some issues with censorship. Apparently Missy Suicide is just a figurehead at this point and her ex-boyfriend who owns the site is a jerk who's just milking the concept for all he can.

A few of the girls in the DVD are among those who have left the site in a dispute with the management.
