Do you have any formal education in art? If you do where did ya go?

I'm just finishing up highschool and am interested in trying to get into the comic industry or possibly animation. I checked out NSCAD but wasn't very impressed. So ya, just wandering what advice you or anyone else on the boards may have.
Thanks a lot

Joe Kubert School of Art. (I don't know what his background is). But if I could draw I'd go there.

I know you didn't really ask me, but I'll throw my 2 cents in about art school in general anyway. There's not a damn thing that they can teach you about traditional art (drawing, painting, sculpture) that you couldn't learn on your own if dedicated enough. Draw from life as much as possible and get yourself a book on perspective.

That being said, the greatest benefit of art school is the environment. Being surrounded by tons of other artists on a constant basis pushes you to get better and you can learn quite a bit by looking over their shoulders and seeing how they handled something versus how you did it. I think the environment is far more beneficial than any particular words any art teacher has ever given me.

So think about what kind of art you want to make and compare your work with that of working professionals in the field. Keep pushing yourself and put in the man-hours and you'll eventually be as good as you want to be. Congratulations, you just saved $40k-80k. ;)

Now if you want to be a 3D computer modeler or animator then I would highly recommend art school.

Just my 2 cents...

A few questions for Steve:
When will we get to see your cover for Battlestar Galactca #0?
Newsarama.com said it would be shown last week, but nothing happened, could you show us?
Are you a fan of BSG?

dave- yes I do have post secondary art training but it was for sculpture, stone carving in particular. At that time, although I was still reading the occasional comic my interests in art lay in other areas. As far as I know, outside of teaching yourself, the Kubert school as Denny mentioned is one of the few places you can go and get practical information. The professor has some good points too, esp. about 3d computer stuff.

Keep the old one Boss, it's hard to top.

Fochod- I actually had that cover done somewhere around September. It is coloured now so you should be seeing it soon. I love the show, although I haven't seen any of the second season. I'm a box set kinda guy. Bought the first season when I was down in NYC for the show.

Welcome to spring folks.

Yay, it's spring!
Thanks, I'll just have to wait for the BSG cover then.
