i have no problem with giving speeches; my first speech was about being a misanthrope (though it was wildly exaggerated).

this one is an informative, 5-7 minute speech, and I chose the life and work of R Crumb.

i've been doing some research, and aside from what i already know, i've read parts from Comix, Comics, and Graphic Novels, wikipedia, lambiek.net, i re-watched Crumb, and tonight i bought the R. Crumb handbook.

But what i realized, was, how am i supposed to explain his work? i don't mean to actually convince anyone to buy his work, but how do i convince them he's a great artist other than explaining his influence on underground comics? i plan to show specific images, but i fear no one will... get it.

how do i explain he's not a mysogynist, even though he admits he has a hatred for women.

that the insane sexual exploitations are his hopes of enacting his darker fantasies on paper, and not... real.

um good luck? How much do you know about the basics of art? that's really the best way to go. use of line, color, space all that easy stuff that most people will get. I don't know about the bottom two questions you might just leave those out for a 5-7 minute speech. highlight generic like when and where he was born what his influences were and who he influenced directly. Also have a interesting story to tell that people can relate to.

talk about how if he found out someone was giving a prepared speech about him for a grade in a college class, he'd probably write strongly worded letters to the student, the professor, the president, and the provost

and how you could sell the return addresses on the envelops for many many thousands of dollars

He sent Johnny Ryan a letter for Angry Youth Comix. It wasnt a positive one. He did the same with Josh Simmons for Happy.

I would shit my pants if I got a hate letter from Crumb.
I would die if I got a positive letter. But that'd never happen so its cool.

i considered going into those types of things, explaining his work in terms of design.

what you've recommended is the rough outline i have thusfar; his life and influences.

but i've been trying to think of who could be considered direct influences.

try hunting down The Life And Times Of Robert Crumb
it's a collection of thoughts and essays from people influenced by him and his work, including Matt Groening, Terry Gilliam, Will Eisner, Spain Rodriguez, Pual Krassner, Jim Woodring, Al Goldstein, Alan Moore, Daniel Clowes, Steven Heller, Roger Ebert, Bill Griffith, Ralph Steadman, Richard Sala, Dame Darcy, Robert Storr (curator at MoMA), Peter Kuper, Jim Jarusch, and a ton others

remember, Crumb's influence on culture and art is a million times more important than his influence on comics

I need to write an Ethics paper for my marketing class today. It has to be 10-12 pages, cite 15 journal articles, 10 other sources, plus APA referencing.

Plus I have a quiz tonight...I'm so screwed.

i like that last part quite a bit.

i'm halfway through the R. Crumb handbook, so i'm only just getting to him leaving behind his life at the American Greeting Card company.

i'm trying to figure out if i'm going to go into this:

it's okay, thanks anyway.

as far as this speech, i have the options of approaching it as Chronological (3 parts of his life- early, formulative years, working in his prime, his work today/influence) or topical, where i would just explain... i suppose as much of his work as necessary.

I have his formulative years down
1. his brother Charles really forcing him to get into comics
2. overbearing father who didn't want to accept his sons weren't sports guys
3. flakey mother who even offered to run away from the family with robert
4. Robert running away to Cleveland to work in the American Greeting Cards factory and get married
5. ran away from job and wife to california with hippies, took LSD and some bad acid, which would alter his life forever and develop most of his most popular characters

i considered talking about how his family had to move to Delaware when robert was in high school from california (which he despised), because he was appalled by the racism and bigotry that he found there. He was afraid to ever show that he didn't hate black people, otherwise he be ostracized by the entire school.

the reason for this inclusion would tie in later to why he created AngelFood.

i wouldn't talk so much about his life, they made a movie about that
i'd talk about what he did, why he did it, what he meant, and how that changed America

damn.

part of me just wants to say, "it's a required speech class and it doesn't matter, because i can do next do nothing and get an A", while another part wants me to do a good speech about Robert Crumb.

you're going to have to help me goddard, like you did with english.

This is the challenge isn't it? Crumb's work at first look does provoke certain initial responses. Almost all of his women and some of his depictions of black people. I'd pick a particulaly thought provoking image to put up and let people look at while you discuss the man and then one everyone has been staring at the image and forming opinions, throw it out to them as far as what they feel is going on. Promote discussion. Your teacher might be impressed by that angle plus it'll burn time! I'm very curious to see how this turns out for you.

i like that idea very much; i've been planning to use visuals, but letting my class mull it over and formulate opinions before i explain is great.
thank you.

Because I know you all care.

I have completed 11 pages, probably wind up around 12.
I have 10 Journal Articles
I have 15 Other Sources
And have APA referenced what I've cited.

I only have the conclusion to write which I hope to crank out real quick.

Cool. I'm just interested to see what happens and what you do. I'll admit that I'm pretty distant from Crumb material because for years I'd see certain things and kind of wonder why it was that way. As in "what is this supposed to be saying?" So, just for my own purposes maybe I'll learn something through your project too.

the speech went over very well.

people were very into it.

i used lord retail's idea to put up images first, and asked the class for their first impressions.

the speech was chornological and biographical, but i went as in depth as i could in 7 minutes of his work.
