View Full Version : When does "a few tatoos" become too god damned many...

I just found an old friend on myspace. Cute girl. Used to go to the clubs with her when I was still into that sort of thing. When last I saw her she had a big tat across her back from shoulder blade to shoulder blade from the neck to mid back. Now she's got sleeves, chest and back covered.

Maybe I'm just old, but that's a bit much. Can you imagine your mom, or your grandmother covered in wrinkled up tats?

ewwwww.

to be fair, any mom/grandma wrinkled skin anything calls for a 'ewwwww'

You ever see "The Man Without a Face"? There's a part where the kid says to Mel Gibson's character that when he sees him he doesn't even see the scars anymore, just him. That's kind of what tattoos are like. I have a few and I honestly don't even notice them most of the time. I would imagine if she had kids or grandkids, it would be something that's just her and although it might set her apart from someone else, it wouldn't seem as strange and foreign as the notion of your own mom or grandma suddenly having ink.

I'm sure as Gen X-whatever grows older it will be more and more common for older people to be covered in ink. I never could bring myself to do it. I was as pierced up, or moreso, than the next guy. But I knew I could always take them out, which I eventually did.

I dunno.

I'd say when it covers a certain percentage of your skin area. People can have lots of little tattoos, but they might only cover a few inches.

For my taste, yes. And I'm not really a fan of the coloured tattoos. A girl I know (who is quite hot) has four tattoos. Two of them, one on the wrist and one on the ankle look like someone took a Sharpie to her.

4 regular sized tatoos wouldn't bother me. But when you gotta wear a turtleneck shirt with the sleeves pulled all the way down to your knuckles I think it's gone too far. I'm hesitant to say emotional troubles but... seems like there has to be a reason you'd want to bury yourself like that.

I think she's cute as hell. The colors are bright and vibrant, and really complement her complexion.
But the realist in me takes over. She better hope she never gains weight in her arms, because that stuff is going to look bad stretched out and floppy. Also, when she becomes an adult, it's going to be tough to get a job outside of the arts and retail with ink like that.
And on a related note, why do women get tats on their bellies and chests? Do they think they are going to look the same after childbirth? Or after gravity takes hold?

03-06-2006, 12:56 PM
For me (being an old fogie and all) I am categorically against both tattoos and piercings. It's a barbaric habit, in no way superior to putting a bone through your nose or a plate in your lower lip. It comes down to bodily mutilation, and I'm agin it.

But I whole heartedly defend your right to do any old nasty thing you want to your own body, and if it makes you happy, I say go for it. But I also defend my right to look at you with derrision. Fair is fair. :D

She IS cute as hell and the picture doesn't do her justice. She's 28, which I would consititute as an adult, but I take your meaning. That was my problem with tatoos for me. I was too forward thinking. Not nesc how will this look, but will I want to still see this in 15 years? Will this stop me from being able to feed my family?

But on the other hand I see more and more people with tatoos in the work place. I work in a corp. environ and there is a guy in my dept with tats up and down his arms. Not full sleeves but still pretty noticable if he's in short sleeve shirt.

On the plus side, she's probably always going to shave her armpits :)

I have to agree with this. I find them to be a big turn-off. The body has such beautiful, flowing lines to it that tats really distract from. It's like if Michaelanelo signed the Sistine Chapel ceiling in giant neon letters. But, different strokes and all that.

This is the girl. Too much?Ehh. I dunno. I say, "Go big or go home." With every sorority sister and jock nimrod on the planet getting tattooed, the only way to really make a statement with tattoos anymore is to really get inked up or design your own. I dunno that I like that...but I sort of respect her level of commitment.

I hear you. The ones on her ankle/wrist are really tiny stars (I'm talking about the size of your pinkie nail) Frankly, those are ugly. She has a shooting star above her left front hip and the Chinese character for love above her left butt cheek.

I am pretty much anti-dumb tatoos. Getting the tat from the picture on the wall or whatever seems stupid to me. If you are gonna go to the trouble of getting inked up permanently, or as close as anything is to permanent these days, it might as well be for something you REALLY like/feel. A different friend of mine is a huge Sonic Youth fan and has "Sonic Life" tatooed on his arm. That's cool. Or if you are an artist and want your stuff on your body that's cool. Not cool is going in and getting some goofy ass butterfly/fish or warner brothers character. I dunno how your girl associates love with her left ass cheek, but if it's real then good for her.

But the full body tatoo... There's just too much. Maybe I'm looking at it wrong. Is it less a personal statement and more of just a really difficult to change shirt? I suppose if you get sick of looking at budha you could cover him up with a flaming skull or a palm tree or whatever.
