Which do you say? What does everyone around you say? Where do you live? I've never understood this. I don't think I've ever known one person who said, "on line." I've come to realize it's pretty common, tho', perhaps even much more widely used. You location on Earth should be a key aspect of this very important scientific research... :D

I say on line. I also say dinner instead of supper, and soda instead of pop.

In line... you wait IN a line, not on a line...

"Pop" seems to be a midwestern thing. I've trained myself to say "soda" or sometimes "soda pop" to the really slow folks around here.

I'm in Connecticut, and most of us say "in line".
It seems strange that the birth of the internet hasn't done away with the phrase "on line" to mean anything other than "on the internet".

That always bothers me. I say "soft drink".

Unless you work at a concession stand at a movie theater, you're weird!

I use that sometimes as well. Also, "carbonated beverage".

Where the hell did this post come from? I made a poll about this at the exact same moment, according to the timestamp on here. The poll was the only thread that existed when I walked away from my computer a few hours ago... how weird. Everyone who responded here, feel free to post in the actual thread...

Yeah, I say beverage when it's not specifically a soft drink. Like chocolate milk and such.

For me 'On' means above... 'In' means part of... so In line...
And it's Coke, damn it, not pop or soda. Soft Drink at the worst.
Welcome to the south, deal with it.

I agree completely. Then again, I'm also in the south, so that might explain it.

Calling any soft drink a Coke is absurd.

I guess the argument for the opposite (and the mathematician's argument) is that a line is two dimensional and when a queue forms, it forms upon an imaginary line below it. So when you become part of the queue, you are on the line.
No, that's just bullshit. I have no idea how one would argue that "on line" is better.

People say on line for the same reason they get on a plane or a train or a boat. No one ever says "I'll call you when I'm in the train" even though technically you're inside, not on it.

That doesn't work for me. A plane or a boat is something you have to physically get on. You walk on a boarding ramp. A line is something that only exists because humans are weird that way. It's not a physical object, it's just a way of having a shitty day at the DMV...

People in the South are DUMB.
And I'm basing this solely on the fact that you call all soft drinks "Coke".

I live in the south, and I don't know anyone who does this. It's "soda" for me & mine.

They also do the "Coke" thing in North Dakota, so it's not just a southern thing.

I think it's a Texas thing, actually. I will ammend my previous statement so that it reads as such:
People in Texas are DUMB.
And I'm basing this solely on the fact that you call all soft drinks "Coke".

Texas emigrants, clearly.
