View Full Version : Are sports cards worth money these days?

I was cleaning out stuff from my closet and found a box of 1990 score hockey cards. I've got Martin Brodeur rookie cards flying around in mint condition. Wonder if they're worth anything? I figured the sports card market is dead, except for really old classics.
Should I take them to a sports card store to sell? Should I keep them in the hopes that Brodeur will be a hall of fame player and will be worth money for my kids, or is that too much wishful thinking?

Best thing to do is check Ebay and see what they're going for on there.
Man, if anything went bust worse than the comic market in the 90's it was sports cards.

The Brodeur card might get you a dollar or two, but cards from that era are pretty worthless aside from a few rookies here and there. You might want to hold to them to give to your kids in the future.

I was fearful that this thread may be deleted, but I have no interest in selling them on eBay, so I'm not pimping my cards out. It looks like they're not getting many bids on there for stuff like this anyway.
Just generally curious if these things are worth keeping, or even worth bringing to a sports card store. Man, I remember in the early 90s scrounging seasonal local shows for non-sports holograms. Sports cards and comic shows were going on ALL THE TIME. I still have a 3D Superman hologram somewhere I paid $10 for. Unreal how much those things are worthless now.

I wasn't meaning to post them on Ebay...just to take a look at Ebay and see what something comparable is going for.
I have boxes of basketball cards that I bought during that craze. I should have known better.

The early 90s saw a huge boom in collecting in general when everyone bought up everything hoping it would be worth something, but since there's so much of it, it's not worth much at all. the market for sports cards has changed tremendously since then with the rise of insert cards and memorabilia cards, and the diversification of sets. Cards from the 90s may appreciate at some point, but not in the near future.

Dang, that's disappointing. These are 1990 Score cards, so I thought for sure, 16 years later, I'd be in good shape. Early Patrick Roys, Brodeur rookies, Derian Hatcher, Jagr rookie, hell, I didn't know Scott Stevens played for the Washington Capitals! Maybe one-day I can get decent $ for this stuff.

I've got thousands and thousands of cards from 89-94 that I collected as a kid. It's currently all sitting in my closet. I started collecting about 2 years ago for a short time and those cards are worth more than the cards I bought as a kid, but mainly because they cost more these days. Maybe one day I'll be able to sell all my old stuff for some good money, but not today.

You can check out a magazine called Beckett hockey. They give all the current prices for hockey cards.
