View Full Version : I really dig Berserk

Been reading the manga for awhile now, and started rewatching the anime tonight. Really great stuff, I have to admit. Hopefully we'll see a continuation of the series on dvd eventually, as I feel the anime really only lays the groundwork for some of the really great moments in the manga (Aka the crazy supernatural stuff).
Gutts makes for one hell of a tragic character, and the world around him is so dark and unforgiving that it makes for an interesting contrast when you get to know the supporting cast.
Although I'm not looking forward to the end of the Berserk story, which looks to be a LONG way off, it should make for one great event if pulled off right.
Manga spoilers:
Griffith, while doing such an unbelievably evil thing in sacrificing the Hawks, is probably the only chance the world has since coming back from the Eclipse and putting together his new Band. Not to mention the final fight has been building for SOOO long.

I've only just started reading the manga (it takes me forever to get around reading manga on my PC) but I've gotta say...Berserk is quite possibly the greatest manga/anime series of all time.

Yeah, I would have to go with that as well, with Battle Royale being a close second.
There's certainly some stuff that I could go without in the Berserk manga, but the hold no punches attitude of the book really engrosses you in the story. I love the fact that Gutts is so hopelessly outmatched in almost all his fights, especially the Post-Eclipse stuff, and yet even after getting the shit knocked out of him, reminds you that he's the scariest mother fucker in the book.

Yeah, I just finished Vol. 15, which is the one that takes place right after the anime ends. I all ready want Puck to die...He's ok, but he breaks down the 4th wall, which I really hate.

Yeah, I would actually like it if it were Gutts and Caska alone without the extra supporting cast such as Puck, but I think the story really did need some kind brighter side.

I wish there were more manga like this one so people wouldn't think it's all lame as shit. We need more like this, Blade of the Immortal, and all that stuff.

Lone Wolf and Cub is my favorite manga series ever, but Berserk comes in a close second. I was fortunate to have met a japanese student who had up to volume 27 when he attended college here in Seattle. The book really picks up around volume 18-20. You guys are in for a treat.

The anime ending is about the most anticlimactic thing ever, if not one of the most fucked up things ever. The manga goes into how he survives and unbelievably, it starts getting even more fucked up as the story progresses.

One of my favorite manga ever, really. I hope Miura never ends it.
And I refuse to comment on battle royale. That thing was just... yea.
Watch out for Evil Otto!

It isn't anti-climactic at all. Berserk has THE best ending to an anime series that ever seen. The manga is pretty damned good as well.
Best manga I've ever read is Lone Wolf & Cub. By far. It's one of the best comics I've ever read, period.
I keep meaning to give this a shot.
I still maintain that DEATH NOTE is one of the best mangas out there.
I agree on Lone Wolf, Blade of the Immortal, etc as well.
Did anyone pick up the MONSTER manga? It's finally out.. the anime series is great too :)

anticlimactic? are you nuts? if that point isnt the climax of the anime series, what is?

About the ending to the anime, Knowing what happens in the manga, it isn't so anticlimactic, but for people who have only seen the anime, which was how I originally got introduced to Berserk, it was pretty anticlimactic.
It was a great ending, having the last thing that Gutts gave two shits about betray him and rape Caska in front of him as his eye gets plucked out and his arm gets ripped off. I just felt that it could have ended with one more episode introducing Skull Knight and having them escape from the Eclipse, which leads back into Episode 1.
I just needed to tie in episode 1 with the final episode a little better.

I disagree wholeheartedly. I hadn't read any of the Berserk manga until Dark Horse began releasing it about a year ago, and I had no problem tying the end of the anime to the first episode. Berserk the anime blew me away. Characterization where none could be expected. It doesn't have the greatest production value, but it has style to spare, and actually makes its production limitation part of that style. Storywise, I had no idea where it was going and the ending completely threw me for a loop. It's the only anime series I've ever watched where I just sat staring at the screen afterwards saying, "Wow."

I believe there was supposed to have been a second season for the anime, but that idea was scrapped.

Did anyone else play Sword of the Berserk for Dreamcast. FUCK, that game was so flippin sweet. I loved it when you could go all ape shit and your eyes would be glowing red and leaving a trippy trail behind when you move, and being able to cut motherfuckers in half and finish it off with a blast from that awesome hand cannon.

I've wanted to play the game for awhile now, but I don't have a modded PS2 and I would like to wait and see if it ever gets brought over to the states. I'm suprised it hasn't yet though considering Berserk was popular here in the states.
The end of the Berserk set didn't have a trailer, but it did have the creator talking about how more than likely there would eventually be a Berserk season 2 but it would have to be an OAV considering how violent the next arc is. Heard a rumor, for as good as they are, that more manga needed to be released in order to fill another season as the first one took about 10 volumes and its up to 27 I believe.

You have a "berserk" meter in the ps2 one that makes the screen slightly red tinged and gutts goes a bit crazy.
you also get
Secondary weapons:
The arm cannon, grenades, crossbow and daggers
Helpers:
Puck et al.
oh and did i mention the berserk armour!
This game is set around volume 22+ till just after he gets the berserk armour

Actually there is a kinda trailer showing scenes that are set after the anime episodes. I remember rather well cause i was like "eh?!?! WTF??!?!? why make this and do no more episodes" but then i looked at the manga and thought "god that would be edited to feck" (probably.... mibbe...)

The Dreamcast games story revolved around the mandragora and the Knight of Skeleton shows up at the end of the credits when you beat it.

This is my favourite manga of all time, up to volume 28 at the moment and the art has really gone leaps and bounds. The story has developed really well...
Lord i hope Miura sensei actually has the time to finish it, he's been having 'health' problems as of late... and this has been on going for 18 years or something... gotta be some kind of a record.
