Speaking of hardcovers David, any chances of KABUKI having oversized collections thanks to MARVEL/ICON as Bendis! and Oeming! have with the original POWERS series*?
Theoretical examples: KABUKI VOL. 1 HC collecting Circle of Blood and Dreams, KABUKI VOL. 2 HC collecting Skin Deep and Metamorphosis, and finally KABUKI VOL. 3 HC continuing the storyline and the world of KABUKI with Masks of the Noh and Scarab.
On a serendipitous level, we would have three volumes each of POWERS and KABUKI in their original series, giving even more credence to MOB. ;)
*I'm referring to the following gem of a collection, arriving June 8th:
POWERS VOL. 1 HC
Written by BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS
Art & Cover by MICHAEL AVON OEMING
You asked for it, and now here it is: THE FIRST-EVER POWERS HARDCOVER! But not only is it a hardcover...it's a hardcover collection of the entire first year of POWERS in chronological order! Plus all the POWERS bonus features you've come to know and love: sketchwork, scripts, interviews, galleries, original designs and a POWERS collection first - a Best of the Letter Column, Year One! This is where the story begins! A must-have for your comic library!

The way you grouped the harcovers makes sense. What 2 you chose for each over size volume.
But since there are already hardcovers of each of the six volumes, would people still want this?
I can't tell if it is redundant or not.
Or if this is what readers would want.
Everyone is welcome to weigh in on this.

As a new reader to KABUKI having began with Volume 2's The Alchemy, I for one would seek to (pre)order them above most other books. The MARVEL hardcovers are gorgeous in the oversized form, and more enticing than the six trade paperbacks I have yet to call my own.
Also should The Alchemy show up in hardcover form as merited the work within, whether it be as KABUKI: THE ALCHEMY HC or KABUKI VOL. 4 HC, the uniform oversized format is ideal for the bookshelf and contents digesting.
Then again, I am patiently waiting for MARVEL to produce the DAREDEVIL VISIONARIES: DAVID MACK HC collecting Wake Up and Echo: Vision Quest rather than purchase the TPBs. Current hopes are for January 2006 on that front.

I think this would be a good move; but instead of oversized, how about a more compact size, a la the new "Sin City" reprints. Those are a really nice size, and the artwork doesn't seem to suffer...

If these are done in the style of the other Marvel HCs (oversized, retailing around $30-35) I think they would provide much more bang for one's buck. Even if they have to cost more than that, getting two Kabuki volumes in one oversized hardcover collection would be value enough to justify the price for me (I currently have the tpbs, but the hardcovers currently available are too cost-prohibitive).
Another factor to consider (which I personally can't gauge) is the number of new fans since THE ALCHEMY's debut who would be interested in these: even if older fans feel these would be redundant, a new readership may eat them up.

I don't have any Kabuki goodness yet but based on your work in Daredevil, I'd love to see your book get the oversized treatment, David. Your art needs to be appreciated in this format and if it means I can collect all of Kabuki at the same time, I'm all for it.

uh no. I agree that the new sin trades are cool...but not that size for a hardcover.

I think a set of oversized hardcovers would be great for new readers as well as old. I've been a Kabuki fan for over 6 years now and I'd definitely buy them, especially if they included a few new goodies. For instance, I'd love to see the Siamese story Mirror, Mirror reprinted in a Kabuki collection (forgive me if this has been done already but to my knowledge it hasn't.) The oversized books would also be great display pieces for serious collectors.
They'd be great for newcomer's too because they could buy fewer books and still be completely caught up on the story. Also if they are oversized with really nice covers it could bring in even more readers who are attracted by the artwork.
P.S. Can't wait for the Artbook!! :D

The bigger the better. For David's art, of course! :p
Anyway, I like how Greg Horn did his art book, so something like that would be nice for Mack's work.

Sorry to bring this topic back to life, but I was wondering if David Mack and Marvel have any plans to release an oversized Hardcover for the older issue? Me and my friends been waiting for ever to see an OHC of Kabuki to add to our collection. It would also be more affordable as Marvel HC are about 30 buck (for 2 TPB). I pick up Powers OHC myself the production is top-notch so I really wish for a Kabuki OHC.

Glad to hear so much demand for this.
I think you have pretty much convinced me.
The order you mentioned makes great sense:
OHC #1- Circle of Blood 272 pgs (7 books) plus Dreams (4 books) 128pgs for a 400pg HC with extra stuff. (11 issues of stuff in total)
OHC #2 - Skin Deep 128pgs (4 books) plus METAMORPHOSIS 288 pgs (9 books) for a 416 pg hardcover with room for extra stuff. (13 issues in total)
OHC #3- Masks of the Noh 128pgs (4 books) plus SCARAB 254 pgs (8 books) for a 382 pg hardcover with room for extra stuff. (12 issues in total).
I think this sounds like it would really work.
If Powers was able to make this work with a $29.99 price then I should be able to do this for a $29.99 price for each one of these too. A better printing price and sales price than I used to be able to afford for a hardcover this size at Image.
Although I do have hardcovers of each of these 6 volumes till at Image (thought vol #2 HC is out), this should be something different enough that they don't compete, but just give the reader the choice of the format they prefer.
And the regular HCs of Kabuki that are out have been out starting since 1998 so anyone who wanted them should have had the chance to get that series of HCs already.
I think that you are right that this would be an oppertunity for the new readers starting with Icon and Alchemy and getting the Powers OHC to really sink their teeth into an oversize format like this.
Anyone that would order this, please let me know on this board of the Bendis board. In fact, maybe I should ask this on the main Bendis board as well.
Or feel free to copy and paste it there and ask.
Thanks.

David-
I think the oversized format gives more...hmm whats the word i want to use.... justification.... not really that, but the oversized format gives us readers the better details on some things (I sware, everytime i read meta, which is quite a few times, i find something hiding in the background).
I'll be one of the first people ordering it. I would keep the hardcovers to myself and let people borrow my TPBs----i've lost quite a few copies of meta and COB so the HC would be my treat hehehe.
