According to the solicitation copy for March's New Avengers: The Illuminati special, the Marvel Universe "is about to split down the middle", and now a preview of this month’s cover to Marvel Previews (for products shipping in March) officially gives that split a name and reveals the title of the “Whose Side Are You On” summer event/limited series by writer Mark Millar and artist Steve McNiven to be “Civil War”.

I'm thinking that others, I believe in the Hulk/Fury thread, were right when they said that
that Nick Fury was operating with a rogue faction of SHIELD and striking back at those who have filled his role. The decisions he, and others make, will lead to the Civil War where heroes have to choose ideaological sides. Should be very interesting.

hmm....secret war = identity crisis (mindwipes and betrayal)
Planet Hulk = Omac (sattellite gaining sentience and whatnot, and even more OMAC proof comes out in next week's issue, if you don't belive me)
House of M = infinite crisis/one year (or in marvel's case, a few days) later.

Agreed. When Millar hits, it's a grand slam, out of the park home run (Chosen)
But when he misses, it is waaaaaaaaay off. Like the pitcher was throwing to first base, and he swung anyway (Wolverine)

I'm stoked. Are there a lot of mini's and events going on? Yeah. But, they're changing the status quo, and you don't just wake up and change it. You have to have a good story, and thus far, Marvel has delivered an amazing story thus far, one that I hope continues through next summer and beyond.

I remember one of the first Millar things I ever read was a Millar arc with Quitely pencilling in the Authority where there was this overweight balding doctor villain taking on the team. It was one of the most twisted and amazing things I had ever read at the time. That's what got me to love his work. And then to follow that up with Ult. X-Men, he had me. Well... I suppose it's interesting... One hopes that this isn't gonna turn into a crossover event of the year pissing contest with DC. Anyone who remembers the 90's knows where that goes. Right into the shitter. Next thing we'll have the foil embossed covers again polybagged with 12 Classic Overpower cards in it and a CD-ROM with a flash comic attached.
Alls I'm saying is don't get carried away with this guys.

Speaking of THor coming back to the 616 as a hippie (Lemme issue a pre-emptive "What's the 616?" even tho I damn well know what it is at this point.), Hey OEMING? What's the deal here? There were these things about Thor starting up again with people finding asgardian objects of power and becoming new asgardians. And of course now that Dani's maimed, she's prime material to be head of the Valkyrior. If not the new avatar of Sif.
In any case, I thought that was getting ready to rev up. Now I'm hearing Illuminati this, Planet Hulk that, Decimation other thing, and Civil War whozamathingits. What happened to the big Asgardian reboot? Did you not deliver the requisite number of hookers for JQ to snort coke off the backs of or something? What gives?

sounds kinda cool i guess. i don't know, i love millar most of the time, when it doesn't seem like he's being over-the-top for over-the-top's-sake (wanted), and mcniven has never done a bad thing in my eyes. but big event after big event is starting to wear on me. thank god the ultimate universe never really does this, otherwise we'd never get normal stories.
as far as civil war itself goes, i'm thinking this is going to be a thinly veiled allegory for the current administration and its red vs. blue mentality, which should be cool with me. hell, you couldn't even tell secret war had a real life political motive till this last issue, so....
basically it comes down to mcniven. which i hate to say. i NEVER buy books for their art. but his stuff....damn.

I hate you.
I saw an interesting theory posted on another board..
Quicksilver is going to the Inhumans in an attempt to regain his powers.. Black Bolt refuses.
Now for a bit of added speculation..
The Kree/Skrull 2 War comes to Earth. Without a lot of mutants to help defend Earth, they turn to Black Bolt to enlist his help, and refuses. Skrulls left behind on Earth shapeshift, (helping smooth over continuity errors) causing people to question who's real and who's a Skrull.
Anyways, I'm hyped, I just wish they'd steer clear of "real world" names that bring baggage with them (Civil War; Illuminati; etc)

in one of his books Phillip K. Dick wrote that a civil war was perhaps the most noble, and simultaneously tragic, of all types of wars.
why?
because it is fought over something both sides stand behind 100%. they believe in their cause so strongly they are willing to fight their own "brothers."
Those action sequences... damn.Millar always did Great action sequences.

I realize you're making a joke for the most part, but..
Planet Hulk =/= Omac
1) OMAC was about a superhero using the satellite to keep track of the superhuman populace and losing control of it and having it turned against him, right? So far, we haven't seen this being the case with the SHIELD thing Hulk is up against (some have speculated it looks like an old bad guy from the X-Men).
2) This isn't Planet Hulk, it leads up to it, but we're not at Planet Hulk yet :)
3) Feel free to spoil me with more details :D

*COUGH*ONE YEAR LATER*COUGH*
I'm just going to have to quote what I said at Newsarama :) :
Opening leading to minis leading to finale was done by Age of Apocalypse.
A jump in time was done by Marvel years ago.
Superheroes in conflict? Secret Wars? Or maybe any comic ever that had heroes fighting.
A low continuity line featuring DC's icons? Ultimate
DC Essentials?
Annuals making a return at DC after Marvel brought them back?
Johns and Heinberg "dissasembling" the JLA?
Scandals costume in Villains United? Almost identical to the Scorpion costume we saw before that.
So, am I going to start crying that DC steals from Marvel? No, of course not, that would be stupid. Firstly, I understand why a company may, shock horror, use systems that work! If annuals are shown to work in this day, why wouldn't DC do the same? If a company starts making TVs, do you accuse them of stealing ideas? Secondly, I realise that the superhero genre has very very few original ideas. EVERYTHING has been done before. One company doing a story about superhero division when another is too isn't stealing ideas, it is using an idea that has been around from the start. What next, shouting "They stole their ideas! That hero hit a villain!"? http://www.newsarama.com/ubb/smile.gif
Yeah, but we like Ron.But you LOVE me

How can you bash the Authority by Millar? I pointed out in an earlier post how blown away I was by a single issue of his run. His Ult. X-Men is IMO the best run that book has seen (Bendis, Vaughn, etc all had good follow ups, but Millar set the tone and had the best stories IMO, Vaughn's later stories have rocked but now he's off when he's seriously hit his stride), Wanted and Chosen were so good, and Ultimate Fantastic Four has been satisfying every step of the way. Ultimates doesn't even need to be mentioned. The only books that I feel he didn't totally destroy on were Trouble (of course), MK Spidey, and Wolvie (too much action from start to finish that the intensity of it was lost part of the way through). The dude's seriously got a second wind and is killing. I can't wait for Civil War.

I heartily disliked Wanted. But, knowing that he can't be that "extreme for the sake of it" in the Marvel Universe, I'm betting Civil War will be quite satisfying. The man knows action, and no one can deny that.
