I can't believe it! I just drew the last line on a Daredevil page. Done. Finito la comedia. My farewell song.
To all who read the book, supported us, loved us, hated us. To all I bow. It has been a great run, my best work, my best job with some of the best professionals some of which turned close buddies later in life. It took me to many places in the world, it made new friends for me, it opened great opportunities and a few awards.
Now I pack my bags and off to Hawaii tomorrow morning to join Bendis and the rest of the crew.
Thank you.

Extra special thanks for putting me in "The Golden Age".

Your work on Daredevil is sublime. It was great to see your skills as an artist get better and better throughout the run, and you'll be sorely missed on the title. I can't believe you're going to have me reading a Spider-Woman book.

*stands up and applauds*
without even reading the end of it, I stand by my original statement. Yes, Frank Millers run was THE run on Daredevil since the characters creation.. until now. Daredevil was very possibly going the way of so many other Marvel mainstays... down the drain into the guest-star spots of oblivion because no one was treating the character the way it could have been done.. until now. Congrats on an amazing run on an amazing book and for shaping the future of a character that could have very easily just fallen off the map.

I was around on the board when you guys first started, I found this place just after Bendis' first issue of USM. I then started picking up POWERS (and eventually Jinx and Torso) because I liked Bendis' writing on USM and hanging around this place. So when I read that he would be starting on DD I was psyched to give it a try. I knew after just a few pages of that first issue that I was gonna be a huge fan of the book. And it was the combination of the art with the story that made me feel like, right off the bat, this might turn out to be my favorite comic book ever. Seeing your Kingpin those first few pages was special. The sequence of his "Ceasar" style stabbing early on was very effective. I knew this guy had a great sense of visual storytelling right away. (that awesome explosion double page spread in front of the courthouse from that issue just popped into my mind) That was the thing about Maleev, he's an amazing, and very realistic storyteller.
One of the best thing about reading the book these last few years was getting to see your style evolve and grow during the course of the run Alex. The work you've been doing with Dave Stewart since he came on board has been particularly brilliant. (though the stuff with Hollingsworth was killer too, I loved the stuff you guys did with the Owl issues) You gave this book a look and feel all its own man, thats one of the many aspects of your run that will endure for a long time to come.
Also, I can't say enough about reading the book when you actually live in NYC. Alex always got the backgrounds and neigborhoods right, that was fucking cool.
Don't want to forget all the amazing covers you did every month either, that added to the experience issue after issue because they always intrigued and captured the mood.
and lets not foget that AM is all about drawing the super hot ladies! 8) Ones that always still feel like real woman though, not characitures.
Bottom line, Bendis/Maleev's DD is my favorite comic book run ever, and I'm really gonna miss picking it up every month. thanks for the ride, and add me to the chorus that just can't friggin believe I'll be buying a Spider Woman book either! :)

Since then, your work has never stopped getting more exciting (to me as a fan) and technically impressive (to me as an artist). Your Daredevil run cemented you as my favorite artist in comics today (edging out the prolific hand of John Romita, Jr and the bizarre hermitage of Travis Charest) and I'm followin' you for the long haul. Congrats on maybe the best run in Daredevil history, and I look forward to the future...

Well, what can I say? Wow seems natural, but even that really can't sum up what the two of you did here.
Make no mistake about it, I was not a Daredevil fan a few years ago. Curiosity due to the upcoming movie and a great 25 cent issue helped change my mind. At that point, I just wasn't a Maleev fan. His style was too dark for my tastes. I'd grown up on artists like Joe MAD and George Perez, and this simply was too different for me. At first. Once I picked up the Underboss trade, I was a Maleev fan for life. It also changed Bendis from "that Ultimate Spiderman guy" to my favorite writer.
And there were just so many highlights. Every issue just gave me more and more reason to love this team. One of my favorite arcs was "Golden Age" which, in my humble opinion, was one of the single greatest artistic moments in mainstream comics. It proved Alex's strength as one of the greatest artists in comics today. And let's not forget Bendis, who has all of us on the edge of our seats with "The Murdock Papers". Never before have I read cliffhangers that made me anticipate the next issue as much as yours do, Brian.
Let's all raise our glasses. Brubaker and Lark have some massive shoes to fill, 'gents. Here's looking forward to Spiderwoman.
P.S. Can I get a Myspace add, Alex?

Reading your post Mardachamp made me think-
I starting reading daredevil because of Smith. (Very long story short- my other best friend rob is a huge smith/batman fan and told me smith wrote DD). Anyhoo- I bought guardian devil tpb and stumbled across that week's direct at borders- the first issue of 'out'.
In that arc there is a sequence- a 2 page spread- that maleev does (foggy is talking about the circle of violence in matt's life) and Alex has all these little panels- the death of karen, the death of elektra- and I don't know what the fuck it was, but between what foggy was saying and those pictures....I felt at a total loss. You could definatly feel foggy's anger and pain.
That spread, to this day is still my favorite spread in the whole run. That spread was what made me go and hunt down the entire run in my LCS.
Funny thing- last year at megacon I was able to talk to JQ for a mintue. I asked him- as a daredevil FAN- what the best run was. You want to know what JQ said? He told me that, given a couple of years the alex/brian run would have just as much importance as say- the miller daredevils. but as he said, we are all to close to it now to realize it.
:)
I had to tell him I agreed with him.

Thanks for your long tenure on the book, Alex. Your art in the 'Nuff Said issue made me a Daredevil fan and mainstream comics reader.

I don't post very much but I wanted to tell you I've bought and loved every issue of Daredevil since Bendis took it over... Thanks for your huge contribution to the book... One of my favorites of all time...

Thanks to you and Bendis for an excellent run on Daredevil, one of the best in comics in the last five years. I am sure you are feeling a mix of sadness and hapiness. Sadness because you are leaving a character that has been part of your life for the last 5 years, and hapiness because you know it was a success on every level. Congratulations on that achievement, and best of wishes on your new project. I am sure most of us here on the Bendis Board will support you and Bendis in the Spider-Woman comic.
Cheers!!!

Thanks for the great view of the character
Great job with your DD run, Alex.
I think that every artist in a way wants to be the person who is linked to a character, who defines the character and makes such an impact that they will always be the one that future artists are compared to - "This guy was nothing compared to Maleev's run, now THAT was art..." Thanks for an unforgettable run...

Now GET OUT OF THE WAY and let Lark through!
Wonderful work, Alex. You've come a long way since PREDATOR... ;) But I got nothing to add to what's been said so far. Keep it up, man!

Thank you Alex. I think you and Brian bested Frank Miller of DD. You will be missed.
I am glad to stay on this title with Mr. Lark and the Bru!
Thank you again, to Alex and Brian

I can't believe it! I just drew the last line on a Daredevil page. Done. Finito la comedia. My farewell song.
To all who read the book, supported us, loved us, hated us. To all I bow. It has been a great run, my best work, my best job with some of the best professionals some of which turned close buddies later in life. It took me to many places in the world, it made new friends for me, it opened great opportunities and a few awards.
Now I pack my bags and off to Hawaii tomorrow morning to join Bendis and the rest of the crew.
Thank you.
You had a fantastic run.
Can't wait to see your work on future projects.

thank you alex and bendis. i'm so glad that you guys got the call to work on the same character that ushered me into this comic obsession. the very first comic i ever read was daredevil 181. i've suffered through the crappy writing and costume changes. it killed me to see such a great character shuffle off to midiocraty. but after reading your guys's first issue, i thought this run would reinvigorate the title. and it did and it made me proud to say i was a daredevil fan. your run parallels if not surpasses that of miller. when i have kids, the first comics i will give them is daredevil 181, your guys's daredevil run and kabuki. thanks so much and good luck with everything you do in the future.

That is where I started reading DD as well.
I was like 9 or 10 and that Punisher/Angel Dust story at that time really had an impact on me.
That was my intro to DD.

This run, from Underboss to (and I'm sure of it, even if I didn't read it yet) the Murdock Papers is a Bible of dark superhero comic book. Thank you for everything you did, thank you for giving back his real sense to the word "new". New ways of story-telling, new ways of performing arts...Thank you for "Out" and "Hardcore", my two favourites, and for all the anthological scenes you manage to put into them.
I can't wait for Spider-Woman to come out.
