View Full Version : Uncomfortable Last Names

I know a person with the last name 'JUELICH'
it's pronounced like 'JEW-LICK'
When people call and asks for this person, they never want to say it the way they think is right. They try to avoid saying it, or say 'Jew-letch' or 'jeuwe-lick' or something like that. They chop it to avoid saying her last name correctly. I don't know why, but most feel uncomfortable, and when I correct them, they usually come back with a nervous laugh and tells me that they thought it was like 'jew-lick', but wasn't sure.... so why not say it like the way you thought it should be the first time?
Anyone else know names of either last or first that people find uncomfortable?

I had a telemarketing job once working for one of our state Senators and this guys name kept popping up on the call lists every night... Dick Gooby...
We all started to think it was a fake, because he was never home, but one night I got ahold of him and when I asked "Am I speaking to Dick Gooby?" the whole office exploded into laughter and I had to hang up.
Then we found out that not only was he a real person, he was a MAJOR contributor to the campaign I was working for.
