I just saw Dead Alive over the weekend, and I'm pretty certain it's the goriest movie I've ever seen. My roommate, however, thinks it's not that gory. He's out of his fucking mind. This was so over-the-top gory that I was both laughing and getting grossed out at the same time. It was beautiful.

I'd agree with Dead/Alive, although Ichi the Killer is definitely the goriest serious movie.

Dead Alive is a classic. I roll on the floor during the Priest fight scene everytime. It very well could be the most gory. But since its a comedy, I don't know. Day of the Dead may be the most non-comedic gore movie ever.

Also check out Argento's contemporary, Lucio Fulci. In The Gates of Hell, a possesed woman pukes out her own intestines (check out the sound efx, yo). Fulci bought some innards from a local butcher shop and the actress actually put them in her mouth!

Birthing videos. As they said in Coupling, it's Horror Porn.
But seriously, Dead Alive is gory, but also that German film from the 80's Bad Shit was gory if I remember right

Suspiria and Deep Red are classics. Pretty much anything by him, though, is just pure horror awesomeness. And his daughter's pretty damn hot, too. ;)

The guy's head blowing up?
EDIT: I know it's practically quaint by now, but Un Chien Andalou still creeps me out. Not that it isn't beautiful, but "that scene" is nuts. I'm incredibly impressed how it still manages to illicit that reaction, after such a long time. Fuck you, those who would say I'm desensitized.
Plus, if not for that movie, the world wouldn't have Debaser. For that, it is truly a better place.

I know everyone is entitled to their opinions, but mine personally, I would have to recommend anyone who likes decent horror movies stay away from both Argento and Fulci. When they direct, it's like the film reel actually turns into thousands of yards of feces.
