I know what you mean. First time I moved out into a house with a few other friends, I ended up in the room next to one of the two women living there. But there was a sliding door in between our rooms, so even though I had put my dresser in front of it, I could still hear everything.

Not only the "nighttime stuff", but also her singing Cher songs when getting ready for class at 6 am. :shiver:

Then I went to the window to look for the dog when I realized that the sound wasn't coming from outside, but through the wall.
