Most recently, they played a major role in the fate of The Sentry in the pages of New Avengers: Reed Richards, Black Bolt, Namor, Professor Xavier, and Dr. Strange. Together, the five are known as the Illuminati, and in March, Brian Bendis and Alex Maleev will show their history in New Avengers Special: The Illuminati.
We caught up with Bendis to talk secrets, cabals, how it starts to come apart, and similarities.
First off, the special was originally planned out to be an arc of New Avengers but moved into its own special as circumstances called for it to be something more than an arc. Rather than a multi-part story in an ongoing series, the special will now serve as a prelude to 2006's major storyline that will run through the Marvel Universe.
Key in this stage-setting: explain the history of the Illuminati. ....

Im sure this is going to get me ripped apart, but does anyone else think that it might be just a little early to be talking about a storyline that wont be coming out until March? I know DC was ramping up for IC 6 months before the thing hit, but even that was causing me a little bit of the whole "hype fatigue", I mean HoM just ended, Secret War hasnt yet, and we still dont even have the "official" answer as to who Ronin is and who is going to stay an Avenger.
I just think it would be cool to have waited until maybe January to talk about the "Illuminati" thing.

What about Iron Man? Why was he left off the list?

Cool! Looking forward to it!
Although the Inhumans/House Of M thing doesn't seem touched on.. maybe they mean DECIMATION?
And if the rumors are true, what happens if you remove one of those segments? Mutants? Magic? etc.
Also, speculative guessing here, but..
.. Bruce Banner found out about SHIELD stockpiling gamma bombs a while back.. I wonder if that'll get touched upon in PLANET HULK/ILLUMINATI.

I hope it's not written by Millar.
JMS, Brubaker, PAD or Kirkman would be cool.

Probably not Millar or JMS. Millar's off for awhile, but JMS is pretty much sticking with Supreme Power & Amazing Spider-Man.

I dont mean it as it relates to the story or what it might or might not be, I just mean we arent going to see this book for about 4 or 5 months, do we really need to get so many plot points right now? Wouldnt we be better off hearing about it in January or something? I dont know, I just get a little burnt out hearing about things 5 months ahead of time and lose interest when they actually hit the stands, maybe its jsut me

Yeah, I sort of agree. But, in the entertainment business, things tend to be hyped as early as possible to get interest going.

A lot of it has to do with the comics industry, and the fact that one must place one's order a great deal before the comic actually comes out. So they have to do the hype now, to get people to pre-order and get LCS owners to order a lot, instead of (or in addition to) when it actually hits the stores.
Maybe I should just read the article...grumble grumble...
Ok I love comics and everything, but ummmmm...when the fuck did these dudes become "The Illuminati"? How did I miss this?
It's a retcon.

He's also doing FF, Silver Surfer, Book of Lost Souls and Bullet Points. So, why not.
