Greetings board members, This will be my second con ( the best con in canada) attendance, and I am starting a sketch book. The guest list is insanely impressive. I was wondering if you have discovered who charges? who doesn't? Time wise how long am I going to wait? Who should do what? all one character or a plethora? Sktching edicate? ADVICE please, I would love to know a) how much cash to bring. B) Id rather not repeat a mack/maleev faux pas. any help or stories greatly apprieciated.

Cheers

Boss

I have found that a lot of who charges and who does not depends somewhat on the con you are going to. Also, generally if they are in an Artist's Alley they will probably charge. Sometimes if they are appearing at a booth for a different company they won't charge. For example, I got a Batman head-sketch by Ethan Van Sciver for free at the Wizard Booth at last years Wizard World Texas. Which con are you attending? Knowing the guest list might help us narrow down who will probably charge and who won't.

Also, many artists will have different prices for head-sketches vs. full-body sketches. I know Michael Lark, for example, is usually something like $50 for a full body sketch and $25ish for a head sketch. When I got my full sketches from Ale Garza and Cliff Chiang, they were both $40 and were doing heads for $20. The more popular the artist, the higher the price. :)

Get two sketchbooks. Some artists are really slow. If you have two you can always leave one of the books with the artist and go get more sketches.

As for all the prices and everything, just ask and be nice. Most artists are really reasonable. (Quick sketch for free, headshots are cheaper than full bodies, etc...)

I think it's best to have one of them be a theme (If you want one), and then have another that you can keep open. For example, I have a book with "Superman Family" sketches in it, and another for other characters. The second book is great if you just want to get a different character based on the artist. (Sometimes an artist will only do sketches of their own characters, only do quick sketches of their choice, or just won't want to draw/won't feel comfortable with your theme. Best to be prepared.)

I'd love to see a Finch drawn Stryfe sketch.
