Yunjin Kim

While she doesn't have the "star power" that a Kabuki major motion picture might warrant, I have recently enjoyed her work and think a Kabuki move would be a nice vehicle for her career.

Lucy Liu

Obviously star power isn't an issue here, but I fear Liu may be two one-dimensional for this role. This choice would make the bankers in Hollywood happy, though, and light a fire under Lucy's waning career.

Bai Ling

This is really a random choice on my part. But I do enjoy her when I see her on the screen. I think physically she could handle the role. She just always seems a little freakish to me, which may actually be a good thing.

Michelle Yeoh

I love, love, LOVE this actress, but I fear she's too old for the role. Pity, really.

That's it for now. Posting this for fun more than anything.

Absolutely! This is just for shits and giggles. I just threw out a few names. I'd love to hear other options, like what M. Sean put out there.

Let's hear 'em, y'all. I'm sure there's somebody I didn't even consider.

My vote goes to either Lucy Liu or my favorite Japanese actress, Mika Nakashima:

I'd like to suggest an alternate:

Zhang Ziyi

Or heck, why not Mandy Amano, she's already the inspiration for the covers....

I'd love to see Yunjin Kim.

If you'd like to see another movie she's done, check out the movie "Shiri" (or "Swiri"). You might be able to find it in the foreign language area of your local Blockbuster. After watching the depth of emotion she has in this movie, you'll know she's a shoe-in for Kabuki!

will try and find a pic but the actress from Takashi Ishii's 'Black Angel' first comes to mind for the role of kabuki

spunky yet playful

Zhang Ziyi, who is Chinese, is already playing a Japanese role in Memoirs of a Geisha. I would be even more disappointed in Hollywood if the Kabuki movie were cast with Chinese and Korean actresses too. But hey, I guess all Asians are the same, right?

edit: I'd also like to note that I didn't vote because none of the options are Japanese. ex: I love Meryl Streep, but I would be offended to see her cast as a runaway slave in a Civil War epic or something. It's just about respecting the culture that the movie is supposed to be representing, which I think Kabuki does fabulously. Inadequate casting would be an insult to both the book and Japanese culture as a whole.

Hi Kat & Mack-addicts,

Long time no see, Kat. I hope that all has been well with you. :)

I have to totally agree with you on all your points. I'd be very disappointed too if the lead role for Kabuki wasn't cast with a Japanese actress as it would take away from what Kabuki the comic and the character represents. It's not like the "Daredevil" movie where the Kingpin was played by Michael Duncan Clarke as the ethnicity of the character in the comic book never played a significant role in its development.

I'm Chinese myself and I was disappointed as well with the casting of the three main female leads in "Memoirs Of A Geisha" with Chinese actresses. I love Zhang Ziyi too - both because she's a fine actress and 'cause she's hot ;) - but every time I've seen her in the trailer for Memoirs, something just doesn't seem right to me. But I guess the studio wanted a "big name" for the lead and there just aren't any big name Japanese actresses in Hollywood right now, which is a shame.

There are plenty of characters in the story- room for several actors to play high profile parts in the story.

From Akemi, to the Noh, to Kai, the General, Link Kinoshita, Cowboy, etc
