Just got word from the printers that they refuse to print QUANTUM #6 due to its adult content.
This really get's my goat. James and I went to great lengths to tame the scene in question (some of you have scene it) down as tastefullyl as possible. I don't see how this could be viewed as X when you have something like Boogie Nights out there or any Ewan McGregor or Harvey Keitel flick where they're actually showing a penis. There isn't even a penis in this book.
This puts me in a pickle, because ComixPress is still holding printing and I can't afford a run through Brenner.
If I can't get this to go, this will probably mean the end of QUANTUM as a monthly. I'll just collect it in trades and screw them all.
I'm still appealing to them. We'll see how it goes.
Not a happy camper,
Philip

They're apparently taking it to their management team today. It has been posed that a black "censored" box may go over the part in question. This would be a deal breaker for me.

That'd be a great help!

Well, I don´t usually say this, but if I were you, I´d edit the scene and save the original for the tpb. It´s issue # 6 you´re talking about and (if you kept some sort of periodicity) you have a responsibility to your readers.
If the situation was another, I´d say "fuck the printer, their loss!"

I guess my question would be, how much does the scene add to the story? Is it crucial to keep it in there for the sake of the plot, or are you fighting it because you resent the idea of being censored. I've honestly never read your work so, I don't know it's overall tone.
Though, it makes me wonder how books like Battle Pope, Tarot, and various indie titles can get away with nudity and sex but, your book gets pulled? Censoring always seems to get a little hypocritical.

Ok, here's an update from the guy brokering my printing deal:
Well, I have discussed this with the printer, after they had a meeting of
management that included a conference call to their lawyers. The problem stems from
not wanting to get sued for sexual harassment if an employee that works on the
printing, or one that packages it, is offended by the scene as-is, because it does
show a sex toy in-use. I'm counting 7 spots where the Dildo flops about here, and am
confirming what they want specifically. But they say that they will print the book if
we put a Star or other covering image over the Dildo where it shows. Sort of how sex
ads in magazines have to have a star on a pussy, etc. If this were a smaller shop,
we'd probably get away with more. But this is the offer of the printer after much
consideration...I don't know if it compromises the book completely (Or, if it allows
you to print an "uncensored" NC-17 rated version later, if that's actually a good
thing) They aren't asking for the butts or boobs to be covered, just the dildo.
So now the only thing they're concerned about is the strap-on my character's wearing? Forget the fact that her breasts are bare. The dildo is the issue.
I just can't get my head around this. What do you guys think? Should I just suck it up and put the "stars" us as recommended? Or do I just hold out for ComixPress or when I collect the rest of the arc in TPB?
This has ruined my day,
PC

No, it's completely rational. He can be in cahoots with one of these employees hundreds of miles away who had him devise the comic just so this offensive panel would emerge on the exact time and date that the person targeted for harrassment will be working. I mean, it's pretty obvious, i thought.

I don't understand how it's JUST the dildo that could sexually harass someone. Is it a lippy dildo? Does it make off color remarks?
Seriously, that is so much ass backwards corp. thinking that I can't even take it. Gail Simone should shoot your dildo in the head!
