I don't see what the big deal is. People riding on weird-ass creatures has been firmly established in Star Wars lore.

Such as the Tusken Warriors riding on the Banthas, (the woolly mammoth looking creatures) or the Imperial Stormtroopers riding on the giant lizards, or Luke riding on the Tauntaun which looked like a cross between a camel and a kangaroo.

I think at this point they make the toys first and then build a movie around them. I remember reading somewhere that the first Ewok toys were made before they even made the suits for the actors.

It's likely that the merchandising development begins the same time as production starts on a movie like this.

It has to, if you want as much product to come out as Star Wars will have.

Lots of bugs have "hairs". They use them to sense the environment...kinda like using the Force. It should all be coming together for you now.

The bid deal is that at least they designed the creatures. This is just....well, a bug. Real creative. Not to mention lame. Lucas has just surrounded himself with a bunch of fanboy geeks who nod and say "Yes sir, Mister Lucas" all the time. Someone needs to step in and slap him and say "George, this idea is pure shit - let's see if we can come up with something a little better, hmmm?" Which is what they did on the first movies becuase he was nobody. As soon as he got powerful, the movies went down the toilet.

If you need proof of what I'm saying, go get the "Art of..." books. Look at how, in Star Wars and Empire, they started with initial concepts and pushed them and changed them until they reached the final form. By the time of Jedi, and even moreso on the last 2 abominations, there was pretty much just one idea for each design, and any additional work was just "refining." If they changed the design at all, it was because Lucas decided he wanted to go in a completely different direction with a completely different, but equally lame, idea.

Also, is the giant bug in the movie? Or is it one of those "expanded universe" things?

there are some cool figures, but i won't get any. i have no where to put them, by collection already has more figures than i care to take note of (that are in boxes due to the lack of space issue) and getting more just seems silly.

I don't think that's a viable argument. The original Star Wars was the maybe the biggest phenomenon in film history. Adjusted for the changing times, it was merchandized even more than the prequels and people obviously loved it, as it became a part of the culture almost over night. He was already quite "powerful" in '77, and only became moreso as successful sequels came out.

I think the real problem is just that Lucas doesn't have good Star Wars movies in him anymore, plain & simple. Chris Claremont put the X-Men on the map, but when he returned to the line, the stories were terrible. This is the same thing...

Although Yoda riding a giant bug is weird, it could be one of those instances where they make a figure after a character that got 1 second screen time, and Yoda may not even ride in the movie... that is my only thought/hope.

I'm over it. I geeked out at Wal-mart: Bought the Yoda cereal, the Darth Vader Lava pop tarts, the Sith dark chocolate m&m's, spinning action Yoda, and the die-cast star destroyer. I feel so weak and guilty.
On the plus side, Lucas is planning 3D versions of the original series. Another chance to get roped in.
